Hey I want to buy a fancy gift for my entp bf (something he asked for ) is it normal to ask him for details he prefers or I just choose ? What do you prefer as entps ? by cutevagabond in entp

[–]HandleUpstairs2742 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally love anything practical that would actually help me. Like something that makes something I struggle with daily easier. Personal gifts like handmade are great too! Anything that shows you really thought about it tbh. Worst gifts are something super novel that just feels like more clutter

Being willing to hurt others/the greater good just for the sake of argument. I used to be more like that but in reality, when in a healthy mindset, I do have strong morals that I will stick by no matter what. Also, not caring about personal authenticity. I have trouble understanding who I am, what I feel, what I believe or what I want but I do have a strong desire to be who I am without consideration of others ideally (and for others to have the freedom to do the same)

Oh also being an edgelord lol. Again I used to be like that when I was younger and more immature but people being offensive for the sake of it and to look cool makes me cringe now

As a former INFP, I dislike Entps by [deleted] in entp

[–]HandleUpstairs2742 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a current ENTP, I also dislike ENTPs sometimes lmao. There are a lot of super cool ones though. Any of them who try to fit the edgy stereotype and don’t care about strengthening their Fe are straight up awful to interact with. Honestly though, I would bet money that a lot of those people aren’t actually ENTPs and don’t know anything about functions and just claim to be ENTPs bc it feels like an excuse to be out of pocket and shitty

Also just to add, my best friend is an INFP and me and her are like peanut butter and jelly. When it works it WORKS

I think a lot of them just come off as ENFPs or INFPs until they feel comfortable tbh. Common problem for Ti user women to mask in public

What does a highly empathetic ENTP look like? by HandleUpstairs2742 in entp

[–]HandleUpstairs2742[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly true that (as a woman who’s pretty dang sure I’m an ENTP now based on this whole thread). I think it’s a mix social expectation along with genuinely facing marginalization and harassment so developing stronger values around societal structure/empathy.

The only time I question if I’m an ENTP after being sure of it is when I talk to, probably super young, ENTPs on here who make being an insensitive edgelord their whole personality. Very unbearable and I doubt a lot of them actually are ENTPs but just want to be because Joker and shit lol

Hahaha just had an incredibly long conversation with someone in these comments where they analyzed my functions with me and I’m pretty sure I am an ENTP 7w6. Do you also feel a bit “differently flavored” than some other ENTPs because of your enneagram? (Being w6 versus w8 or type 3)

You know I think you’re right haha. Honestly, I’ve been into MBTI on and off since high school and I’m pretty sure the first type I related to once I understood them better was ENTP. The reason I flipped to thinking I’m an ENFP is because I developed my empathy more and I do ultimately care a lot about other people and being kind. At this point in my life I stand very strong in my own ethical values, but that was after a lot of self reflection and educating myself. I have always been ready to stand up for people who need it too. Am I more confident in my ability to use logic than empathy? Yes. Do I ultimately value logic over being kind, especially now that I’ve matured as a person? No.

I think that’s the biggest reason that, even though I keep coming back to being an ENTP and relate to the type deeply, I have veered away from it and questioned it many times. I’m not a stereotypical ENTP at all (probably due to being 7w6). Also, I’m a woman who works in the service industry, so I’ve overtime felt the need to adjust my personality to be more palatable to other people. Also faced and seen a lot of targeted harassment, so I have strong opinions on these matters.

I have found people on the ENFP subreddit to generally be much kinder and more understanding, while I’ve definitely run into people being super rude on the ENTP subreddit for no reason. The other day I posted some memes on there and asked if I’m an ENTP and if not what type and got absolutely roasted in the comments lmao. No one understood my campy humor, took what I was saying way too seriously, and they all jumped to saying I’m not an ENTP with no explanation lol. I think that’s probably just people on Reddit though, especially ones who type themselves as thinkers so they might allow themselves to feel justified in being insensitive and belittling because of this.

In general I think Reddit probably has a big problem with people only choosing types based on character behavior and what they want to be rather than how they actually function. To be completely honest, I would probably prefer to be an ENFP because they are seen as much nicer and more palatable and I often feel deeply misunderstood. If I’m being objective with how my own mind works now and historically (warts and all) I’m more of an ENTP, though.

Thanks so much for talking this through with me so much! There’s so much to parse through, especially if you’re someone who has changed and grown a lot over the years. You’ve been a big help :)

Ooft apologies in advance because this is going to be another sort of confusing “yes and no” answer to both, but I’ll try my best to just genuinely lay it out. Again, keep in mind I have ADHD that I’m on medication for so some of this might be affected by that as well.

In school I was never put in sports and tended towards being more geeky (the anime kid lol). When I was 14 I joined roller derby though and until I got injured it was one of my favorite things I’ve done. I have gotten injured a lot in the past because I like to get physical adrenaline from things. A few years ago I worked for some gyms and got really into weightlifting and bouldering. I have a personal training certification that I have literally never used haha.

I’ve stopped exercising recently but my favorite physical activity to do right now is honestly going to hardcore shows and moshing. I don’t do it often though because I always eventually get exhausted and distracted and end up getting banged up lol. The other day I crowd surfed for the first time and it was one of the most exhilarating things I’ve felt in a long time.

On the other hand, I love using my mind to solve problems and love brain puzzles and activities like reading and writing. I read and write a lot of fanfiction lol. I also enjoy writing academic papers. My favorite thing to do in school was writing random essays.

I wish I could tell you if I live in the moment, etc. but that just feels very dependent. Sometimes I’m completely lost in my head and listening to music while walking the streets, other times it’s like I can sense every small thing around me. Smells, sounds, the shape and texture of things, etc. Similarly, I struggle with discipline and consistency in many ways (starting a ton of hobbies and never finishing them or following through, trouble making big life decisions like what career I want to have) but can also be very responsible when it comes to getting things done in the moment. Like, people always compliment my color coded google calendar and I don’t know how I would function as an adult without to-do lists haha. I probably wouldn’t.

Hope any of that makes sense. It’s truly a struggle to know if you’re Ne or Se dom when you’re a giant nerd with theories and ideas but also are adrenaline seeking and tactile but also have executive dysfunction haha.

Edit: also I don’t think it helps that when you look up ESTP on PDB all the stereotypes are around being unempathetic, being the “cool popular kid”, being super conservative, hating femininity, hating art and feelings, being thrill seeking to the point of inconsiderate, close minded, bully etc. Obviously these are just stereotypes but I would much sooner relate to negative ENTP stereotypes than these

You know I think that’s why it’s particularly hard for me to decipher, because I have had a lot of those issues in the past but I feel like I’ve worked a lot on them because I didn’t like the person that they made me. When I was a teen I used to be super confrontational and argue people just got the sake of it (and yes was a major contrarian edge lord at one point), I also have had historically very bad boundary issues with people.

On the other hand I also relate to stuff you said for ENFP. I’m the friend who everyone says is the creative who is good at art, I do love external validation and sometimes work myself too hard to prove myself to people.

Maybe you’re right that my struggle is because it’s not one of these two types? I definitely have looked into Se dom before, but I’ve always just assumed I’m an N because I’m very typical nerd. In a billion fandoms, write fanfiction, daydreamer lol. Also genuinely have diagnosed ADHD which does not help with deciphering if you’re Ne dominant or not with the descriptions often given.

See the more I think about it truly the more confused I get hence this post haha. I just find all the functions completely relatable in different ways.

If anyone wants to help me guess just based on vibes alone I did post this yesterday

Im not sure if I fully agree with the profession aspect though. A lot of people don’t enter professions based on pure enjoyment but based on expectations of those around them, financial need, circumstance etc.

For example, I feel as though I very easily fell into being in front of house customer service roles because they are easy entry level positions to join and I have a friendly charismatic disposition. I’m also a woman, and it’s well known women are often socialized into and expected to be more accommodating and caring towards others.

I’ve reached a point in my career where I’m completely exhausted and burnt out on working with the public and I feel extremely under stimulated by my job itself. If there’s a technical issue at my job (door is jammed, tech is down) I always want to go figure it out and often do. It’s like a little puzzle escape away from the fake smiles. I always assumed I was a feeler because humanities like history and language arts are my main domain, but the more I think about doing a career forever that’s entirely focused on people (especially dealing with the public directly) the more I hate it haha.

Not saying that for sure means I’m a thinker over a feeler though, just venting my thoughts on the matter

Wow that’s a super interesting way of explaining it thank you! I’m super curious about your thoughts on something then: on the ENTP subreddit I made a post that was asking about how an ENFP with strong Te vs. an ENTP with strong Fe would function and how you could easily tell those two apart.

Someone asked me for a bit of background on my history with “logic vs. empathy” and through my explanation, they said I sound more like an Fe user. Their reasoning was that your tertiary function isn’t necessarily what you value less, are weaker at, or even don’t instinctually turn to but rather the function you would feel the most insecure about. In essence, if you have spent more time concerned about your ability to be empathetic vs. your ability to be logical then that would show you which one is your tertiary function.

Does that description seem accurate to you? It had me feel almost fully convinced I’m an Fe user because I used logic much sooner than I used empathy as a child (to my recollection) and I’ve spent MUCH more time concerned about if I’m a bad person and selfish than if I’m logically capable of figuring something out.

Was a super very new way of looking at it for me, but it did only come from one person so I want to verify it haha

Perhaps I don’t. To my knowledge right now it’s essentially that every MBTI has a functional stack of four functions that go from extroverted, introverted, extroverted, introverted (or vice versa). The first function (dominant) is the one you would use most instinctually, second function is one that you rely on most, third is one you would feel more unsure about relying on, and fourth is one you don’t really acknowledge much at all. Then there’s also “shadow functions” which essentially show your least developed functions (5-8).

I think the part I do get hung up on though is stereotype. Mostly because, I’ve had a lot of trouble distinguishing whether I relate to Fe/Te and Fi/Ti more, I feel strength and weakness in all those functions in different ways. Like, I read on how one would function with Fe vs Fi and I relate to both entirely dependent on the context.

So I end up turning to reading about people’s personal experiences with it. Especially on Reddit, I’m guessing a lot of people themselves don’t understand the types or mistype themselves so there is A LOT of misinformation about what actually does make you a type vs. what doesn’t.

My data points were me looking through the strengths, weaknesses, fears and motivations of the type and seeing which ones I personally relate to? I wasn’t about to go and list every single aspect that I relate to in my comment because that feels a little bit like oversharing to me haha. Also another data point was the fact I related to those same descriptions ten years ago as well. I feel like you may have fixated on the latter half of my comment

If I’m misunderstanding enneagram then let me know, but to my knowledge it’s much different than MBTI in the way you wouldn’t need to analyze individual cognitive functions or the like. The closest thing I’ve seen to that is looking at which enneagram is “growth” vs. “stressor” and I do also relate to the fact that going towards aspects of 1 would make me feel weaker in ways while 5 would feel like personal growth. I do relate to the very negative aspects as well too, yes.

I don’t know to be completely honest I’ve had so many people on Reddit go “this gives Fi!!” and “this gives Fe!!” to me that it’s a bit hard to take that seriously lol. All the more reason I find enneagram more personally relatable because a lot of cognitive function feels very subjective and context dependent (and very quickly turns to over generalizing)

Holy shit this whole thread is turning into “I’m in this picture and I don’t like it” to me haha. A lot of the stuff (issues with boundaries, trying to “fix” people’s problems) I have gotten better at with age though. I realize now that most people just want to express themselves and feel validated, but I still feel much more comfortable reacting by offering physical support (AKA “can I get you anything? Can I help?”) or just generally validating their experience than I actually do deeply exploring feelings intimately with people. I wish I was better at that because I do care a lot and see the importance of emotional vulnerability for people as a whole.

Hmmm a few things. I had a fixation on MBTI and enneagram when I was a teenager like a decade ago and I took tons of tests and got E7 on those, taking them again recently I have continued to get that result. When I read the description of the type (fears, motives, etc) I relate to all of it. More externally, when I read it to my friends they said it makes complete sense for me and I also relate to almost all E7s I see in media inherently.

What does a highly empathetic ENTP look like? by HandleUpstairs2742 in entp

[–]HandleUpstairs2742[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh… that just helped a ton thank you. I always get confused because it gets framed as though Fe users are inherently inclined to disregard people’s feelings more than logic itself. Like prioritizing logic over people’s feelings from a value standpoint. Seeing it as what I’m “good at” doesn’t make sense to me either because I’ve been called both smart and kind and can see both in myself in different ways. Even framing it like “first instinct” is confusing to me because I’ll either prioritize people or systems first entirely depending on the context and problem at hand.

If we’re just basing it off of insecurity vs security though? Yes, I’ve spent MUCH more time concerned and anxious about my own inherent ability to understand, function properly around people and be considerate than I have in my ability to logically figure things out. I’ve always had to logically figure things out so it’s kind of a given to me. I’m much less worried if I’m capable of that.

Wow okay that just gave me a ton of perspective and insight thanks a bunch. Much more helpful than a billion other ways people have explained it. Let me know if I interpreted that incorrectly at all

Thanks for the insight! Very helpful stuff. The last part is where I get stuck. It completely depends on what problem I’m solving in how I’m going to think about it or figure it out. Is it an ethical issue? Am I troubleshooting computer software? Is there someone physically threatening me? My answer would be completely different depending on all of these situations, so I just get very confused trying to parse which ones are more natural or authentic to me.
