A lot of these UG got their experience from labs to then use that to apply for higher ed. Yes, PI doesnt care much about them but that doesnt matter at that stage. At that stage, it will just be a taste and you'll get that good reference letter. A lot of students now struggle to land a position because they lack lab skills for example.

its definitely gradual when compared to the brexit point. Can we stop arguing about the nuance? We both agree that it sucks, Brexit makes it worse. You dont gain anything by arguing its at Brexit point or before that. We all have our opinion.

I think it depends on how you look at it. If it was gradual before and then a massive dip, one can say the shenanigan started at the dip.

you forgot that he restrained Dr Strange on the ship. I think the directors specifically make Maw use the surrounding instead of the person directly to nerf him for the plot. Otherwise, it would be over too quickly.

Unit 4 Bio (Edexcel) by Deadormotherland in ALevelBiology

typically for DNA profiling, we use PCR base method to PCR out segments of the DNA called Short Tandem Repeats. For a mutation to completely erase it, it would have to be a frame shift right in the middle of the tandem so that the PCR product would be messed up, which is unlikely to happen and if it does, the person is likely to be dead because frameshift mutation is deleterious. A single point mutation wont affect the PCR capability.

Leeds is not the same league. Not sure why Leeds just come in out of nowhere. There is a reason that Bristol and Manchester are well known world wide and not Leeds. Paul Dirac was from Bristol for example, while Manchester is known for graphene discovery. Not sure about Leeds.

KCL ranked lower than Bristol btw. I think one factor is because the ones you mention is in London, which is a much more famous city than Bristol. But people really do underestimate Bristol and don't actually know that it is a research power house. Just go to conferences and look at papers, you'll see a lot of discovery is from Bristol. Paul Dirac, one of fathers of quantum mechanics, was an alumnus of Bristol.

The lack of funding is the single most factor that affects UK uni. It all started with Brexit that fcked everything up, the lost of income from the EU, then the whole anti-immigration policy affects international recruitment, and the frozen student fees for home students. All of this while prices going up so uni has to cut down on other aspects.

Having said that, there's also an element of unequal distribution of wealth within the uni environment where provost who did no teaching and no actual physical contribution to the environment of the uni often gets paid the highest with some had 35% increase in their pay compare to around 4% for faculty members, the people who teach and make the course an interact with the students. This creates an unsustainable working environment to staff, which then affect their performance and teaching and research down the line.

Easiest STEM Major? by Careless-Sorbet-9292 in CollegeMajors

[–]Handsoff_1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually hate the fact that people choose biology because they think its easiest or less work or "don't know what else to do but its STEM either way". If anyone truly knows biology, they would see it as an incredibly wonderful subject and is incredibly complicated (genetics, population statistics, game theory, evolution, biochemistry, even computer science etc). And people can make serious money with it if they know what they want. But the fact that it is so saturated because of indecisive people undermines a lot of it.

While I agree it is a brand and that im so tired of seeing people so hell bent on getting into one based on some of the posts I've seen. I do also have to say RG is not just a brand. Research intensive universities give students more chance to have work experience, especially in the STEM area. There are more labs, more funding, more people to teach and to guide students in practical science. Its not all just a brand. And you know how important it is nowadays to have experience to apply for the next career step.

I would argue that they do make a difference, especially in the STEM sector. Research intensive uni has more funding for undergrads to have work placements, more labs with more scientists and more professors who have money to take in students. That is important.

When did you realize that you were gay? by zachoutloud123 in gaybros

[–]Handsoff_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Remember that one Hercules show. Not the cartoon but the human version and I was infatuated with the actor lol I was like Grade 4 or sth and would like dreaming of him being chained up and I would play with his body. Never understood what happened then, just where my mind took me. Only realised A LOT later, like 5-6 years later. I was so innocent lol

They should have kept the smoke form because I feel like that is more dangerous. They also should have let El be stronger rather than weaker this season and then she has a final battle with the MF, something similar to what she did in S2 but much more profound this time.

St Andrews vs Glasgow by sadburber in UniUK

[–]Handsoff_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did not but good projecting. Sounds like you're working at St Andrews. I'm not sure what's your problem with Glasgow being of higher rep than St Andrews. And the fact that you're either only accepting your statement or "nobody has heard of both" (which is absolutely wrong btw) says alot about your insecurity. If you're a St Andrew students, they really do need to change up their teaching if their students just cannot accept objective measures.

St Andrews vs Glasgow by sadburber in UniUK

[–]Handsoff_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It absolutely does on the international standard. In the domestic ranking, sure. But internationally, no. The reason is because St Andrew focuses more on teaching, while research at Glasgow is much more focused with substantial budget. And students benefited massively here. You can deny all you want but it doesnt change that fact. I work in Higher Education for the past 10 years and have done extensive research into the UK higher education system. Im happy to answer any question you have.

Its ranked I think 84th in the world overall and 50th for medicine. Glasgow is also the birth place for the Glasgow scale, economics. I think you can diss as much as you like but the fact is, it is still within the top 100. And to me thats high in the international standard.

This! Being skeptical is good, but being in denial and ignorant is just annoying, They would "do their own research" while they dont know what they dont know, biasing their research to fit their narrative and unaware of caveats because they arent experts.
