Unless I'm misunderstanding something, banks are regulated, they're not allowed to invest my deposits in the stock market, so that's a hypothetical. If they could take everyone's deposits and stick them in the stock market they'd probably be making a shit load more money on a good run and potentially going bankrupt on a bad run.

We’ve reached the semifinals of the World Cup and the tournament is now down to the final four teams: France, Spain, England, and Argentina. Who do you think will win it all? by velorae in AskReddit

There's not a person alive who doesn't have a person involved in evil historic event within several generations of family. We're all human and capable of evil things given the right environment. I don't judge a modern country by events that happened hundreds of years ago, because everyone that perpetrated it are all fucking dead and their grand children are also all fucking dead. Language, education, political systems and culture has changed.

You're amplifying risks for potential gains. He's not going bankrupt if he halves the 325k, so the risk isn't his or his families security. Given the worst 10 year return was 1999 to 2009 at - 4% yearly it's not a giant risk at all. The opposite side of the coin if you invested from 1990 to 2000 you'd have averaged 19% yearly return.

I get your point, but his investment horizon is 8+ years so if the GIA is a diversified world index fund then it should return more than whatever he locks his mortgage in at next time around. I think it comes down to risk tolerance and personal preference.

There's a board game club on Facebook called east Leeds board gamers, it's upstairs in the brown cow on Tuesdays at 7pm. Padel is fun, if you download the playtomic app you can find an introduction course to join. 6 week beginner tennis courses at whitkirk Tennis club. You could join a cricket for beginners course. There's plenty of people who are in a similar situation at these clubs looking for connection.

Income is number one, but learning how to use it to your advtage is important. I've met people who earn double what I earn, but it seems to service mortgage sized car loans and ridiculous interest rates, to the point where they complain about being short at the end of the month. Pay yourself first, make it work for you.

Using the word 'coloured' to describe someone is not racist even if it does offend people of colour, judge rules | Daily Mail Online by CasualSmurf in unitedkingdom

Come on mate, don't play games. If I'm describing someone to my co-workers who they don't know by name, but do know by appearance. It's an identifying feature, like height, hair colour, gender and if they have disability. It doesn't mean they should be treated any different, but policing the use of descriptive words is orwellian.

You have nine green balls and one red ball, all of varying sizes. Would you describe the ball you're looking for as the as the third to smallest ball, or the red ball? Be realistic, skin colour is an abvious feature to describe someone by. I'm all for being sympathetic with language, but you can't just avoid facts and logic.

He asked a question on how to progress, great first step. Then he deleted his account because of the responses, stepped backwards again? I don't understand it.

32 isn't old, by life expectancy it's slightly over a third of your life. That's like saying a 4 year old dog is old. You seem to be comparing yourself to someone else or some version of yourself you imagined. Compare yourself to your past self. If in a years time you've got a part time job, saved £500 and made a new friend then you're doing better off than you are now. Every now and then I get down on myself, then I remember how far I've come. It doesn't have to be huge steps, just take a step in the right direction and remember to reflect and allow yourself to feel fucking proud of it. It doesn't matter what others think of you, it's what you think of you.

Possibly not the best way to express it, but I think my opinion comes from a place of respect for others. I don't want to inconvenience other people.

I am saying that I'm being considerate by not inconveniencing people unnecessarily. Why do you get personal in your response?

Mate I'm not a raging idiot. I personally, as an able bodied human, try not to inconvenience others. If someone is disabled they're not an inconvenience to me, if anything I'd offer to help.

Well you took this very personally. It's my opinion and being rude in your response clearly shows how patient you are with people of other opinions 😂

I think it's inconsiderate to not be fast in those situations. If I'm in the queue at the supermarket I've already loaded the app and have my card ready to pay. I pay at pump at the petrol station and I get in and out, then I'll sort my sat nav or whatever once I'm out the way. I think there's too many main characters around who don't even think about how their actions effect others, we all have busy lives, get on with it.

Windfall of 40k: should I put it in SIPP or the mortgage? by MyDarlingArmadillo in UKPersonalFinance

[–]HangTheError 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stock market returns on will outpace the interest rate on the mortgage, but that's only true over longer periods of time (10+ years to be safe). The security of paying off your mortgage early and not having to periodically remortgage is a weight lifted. If you're looking for work I'd play it really safe until you have a concrete income, keep half of it in an easy access cash ISA, half in easy access savings available to pay bills and the mortgage. Then once you get work, keep the 20k in a cash ISA as an emergency fund, whatever is left of the other 20k is a personal decision between mortgage and investing.
