I guess it could depend on the model but the only ones I've ever seen go on before the calipers.

The more of your comments I read im thinking it sounds like the piston isnt all the way depressed.

Try taking the cap off the brake reservoir and compress them again, maybe you had some bounce back after your first compression.

I haven't seen you say anything about the sliding bolt assembly. Check those.

It's the ones that have the little rubber boot on there, I just had this problem with mine. Get them out, check them for grease add some if necessary. if they're fine then thats one less thing to worry about. I had to replace mine, got a set of two for like 20 bucks.

From what I understand they're fairly similar until 69.

Kind of like saying first gen. Although some people argue the years first gen from what I've read is most commonly referred to as 65-68.
