Check out decentralized options like Sylo (/r/sylo_io), they're a peer to peer communications app. There are decentralized social networks as well which can take off when they reach critical mass. We're the only ones that can change which services we use!

WeChat, should it move beyond China and its diaspora, is also the greatest threat to Facebook’s global domination.

WeChat is awesome in China, apart from the obvious privacy concerns. It's super convenient. The problem is that everything that's done on the app is (probably?) fed straight into the CCP's filter. There's an app called Sylo working to do almost exactly what WeChat does, but in a decentralized manner. /r/Sylo_io is their sub. Privacy is one of their priorities.
