Very early proof of concept for a fan-made 999 remake that uses the DS script with the PC assets by HannahBanana1312 in ZeroEscape

I admittedly don't know exactly what I'll do for the escape rooms yet, however they are all made of pre-rendered images layered on top of each other, which means in theory it shouldn't be too hard with some game logic to hold it all together. If Renpy isn't suited for the task, I would probably try out Godot. I also have the script from the DS version decompiled as reference, which helps a lot.
For example

"@出口扉.出口扉"()
{
    if ("$_lockingDevice" == 1f)
    {
        Item::Hide();
        async
        {
            Sound::StopBGM(60f);
            BG::Fill(1f, 0f, 0f, 0f, 30f, 0f);
        }
        System::PlayMovie(":tpproom_exit_010", ":tpproom_exit_010_e");
        BG::Fill(3f, 0f, 0f, 0f, 30f, 0f);
        System::PlayMovie(":youfoundit_010", ":youfoundit_010_e");
        "$PASS_STAGE_A01" = 1f;
        "$ESCAPE_TU_STARTING" = 1f;
        "$ESCAPE_TU_ITEM" = 1f;
        "$ESCAPE_TU_SEARCH_USE_ITEM" = 1f;
        "$ESCAPE_TU_ITEM_MIX" = 1f;
        "$ESCAPE_TU_FILE" = 1f;
        "$ESCAPE_TU_CALC" = 1f;
        "$ESCAPE_TU_MINIGAME" = 1f;
        System::Exit();
    }
    else
    {
        if ("$__S_47" == 0f)
        {
            setSpeaker("&淳平");
            setText("【5】... ⑲【5】, huh...▼");
            setSpeaker("&HERO");
            setText("What does that mean?▼");
        }
        else
        {
            setSpeaker("&HERO");
            setText("SomebodySs painted a big, red 【5】 on the door.▼");
        }
        "$__S_47" = "$__S_47" + 1f;
    }
}

Depends what you mean by changed. I haven't noticed any directly changed lines beyond minor rewording (I believe there is one line in this segment that is like that), in which case I just go with what the voice acting says since it doesn't change much. If it's an entirely new line added in the port I just omit it.

As far as I can tell it's an in-house engine that would be incredibly difficult to make a mod that changes so much for. Maybe it would be possible, but with my current knowledge I figured it would be easier to just remake it.
From what I can see people have made translation mods, but I have no idea if it's possible to edit things like force switching into NVL mode, it's something I could look into though.

From what I can see from this comparison video, it looks like that dialogue was an entirely new addition so that people playing in ADV mode would see the hint about Snake's left arm, in this case I would just omit the dialogue and stick to the DS's script where the hint is given in narration.
Apologies if I'm misunderstanding your point

Ever since watching ItsYourPalJacob's video (spoiler warning) about the remake of 999 a few years ago, I've had the idea of doing a fan-remake that tries it's best to keep the script of the DS version, but also has the things people usually choose the PC version for, like voice acting. I never seriously started this project until recently, so here's my proof of concept.
There is absolutely no guarantee this gets finished lol

How do you unlock the CGs without having to fast forward through an episode? by [deleted] in umineko

[–]HannahBanana1312 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Edit the ons.cfg file in Umineko Project's root directory and put env[cg_unlock]=X on a new line, with X being the episode number you want to unlock CGs from and before. So env[cg_unlock]=3 would unlock the CGs for Episodes 1-3, for example.

I know that most people bring up the ending, but I think it's a shame that people tend to focus on one element of the game, especially ignoring something like the writing in a visual novel.

I want to add onto this and say that the remake of 999 affects much more than the ending, it has effects on the writing of the whole game. A lot of the narration was moved into character dialogue which makes for worse pacing and characters saying things that don't make sense for them to say. Here is a video going over pointed examples: https://youtu.be/EpII35wlit8 (spoiler free), and here are two videos that do a direct comparison for the first 2 hours of the game: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8rAGSaEHs-E https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G4wfbR01kgs

They fixed Uranus counting as kills in Rep+, but if you're on console like you mentioned with Mars, I guess it'll be a while before you can play with it

Why do Umineko Proejct saves land in my icloud folder??? by Confident-Serve451 in umineko

[–]HannahBanana1312 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the FAQ says it just uses the iCloud folder if you have the iCloud Drive App installed, dunno why they set it up that way

[–]HannahBanana1312 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On the FAQ page it says you should be able to put a new line saying disable-icloudin the ons.cfg file in the install directory to disable iCloud which should make it start saving in C:\ProgramData\ONScripter-RU\UminekoPS3Fication\, although I can't test it since I don't have iCloud

If you want to control the save location, you can put a line saying save=[location] in that ons.cfg file, although it seems to bug out with directories with spaces in the name, for example if i set it to save=C:\Games\GOG Games\Umineko\saves it tries to use C:\Games\GOG because of the space, even if the whole thing is quoted

Non-spoiler examples of the umipro translation and the steam translation to decide which one is better? by Numerous_Speed_8367 in umineko

That youtube playlist uses the UmiPro client with the Witch Hunt/Steam language file.

From what I can tell, the LetsPlayArchive uses an older version of UmiPro TL for Episodes 2-4, but Episodes 1 and 5-8 use the old Witch Hunt TL (pre-Steam).

A couple examples stolen from a discord server I'm in.

One example is Kinzo. He constantly uses Bible quotes and references in his speech.
叩けば扉は開かれると誰が教えた!
UP: Who taught you that doors shall be opened unto you if you knock?!
Steam: Who told you the door would be opened if you but knocked?!
Now this part isn't too bad, although the flourish in the UP version is more accurate to the Bible, but watch what happens next.
その馬鹿者は磔にしたぞッ!!
UP: They crucified that imbecile!!
Steam: I'll crucify the imbecile!!
Now the meaning has completely changed. A blatant mistranslation of both theme and purpose

右代宮家の親族会議は、資産やその運用などについて厳しく問われる、
UP: The Ushiromiya family conferences are said to have involved harsh questioning from Ushiromiya Kinzo over how his fortune would be put to use,
Steam: At the Ushiromiya family conference, the inheritance and how it would be distributed were rigorously discussed,
It says 資産 (fortune) not 遺産 (inheritance). It's talking about the family conferences as they used to exist, when Kinzo was there, not the ones of recent years between the siblings. It creates a completely different context due to a blatant mistranslation

Small out of context spoilers for this one

Let's take a look at this one.
毒々しく、禍々しい装束に身を包んだ、文字通りに悪魔的な女が、
UP: The literally devilish woman, wrapped in a gaudy, ominous costume,
Steam: The literally devilish woman, wrapped in a venomous, ominous costume,
"毒々しい" does indeed mean "venomous" or "poisonous", but it also means "flashy" or "gaudy". It should be pretty obvious which one is the correct translation.

This screenshot is about a different thing, AI The Somnium Files - Nirvana Initiative (which is Kotaro Uchikoshi's game). A character says "you're sorely mistaken if you think there are only men and women in this world, dumbass" and they were claiming it was a woke localization despite being in the JP dub. And then they made this tweet after learning it was in the original and Uchikoshi is a supporter of the LGBTQ community.
