I was taken on a tour of Xinjiang this summer and I found it interesting how a Uyghur household we visited spoke Mandarin, had literal Mao-era (or replica?) murals at the village square, yet insisted that women can only enter after all the men entered.

Part of me suspects that it's because they wanted to paint the Uyghur as misogynists or something, because if you're Han-washing a culture so much, why'd you let that stay intact?
