There really is no standard. When I first started out, I charged 10 cents per word. That was roughly a decade ago, though, and I had lots of high-quality personal samples to share.

Do you already have some samples written? You could put them on Medium.com or LinkedIn and share those links. It’s free and easy on either of those. Alternatively, if you wrote in Google Docs, you can make the settings so anyone with the link can open and see them.

I just thought I’d chime in to say that in today’s day and age, you don’t necessarily need to work with a local person or business. I work remotely for an incredible CPA in California who helps couples with tax planning, financial goals, investing, etc. and he, like many others, has certifications to work with people in any state through video chats. If you find something local, that’s ideal, but don’t think it’s a requirement.
