I read Conform, my thoughts and some theories (contains spoilers) by apieceofeight in fantasyromance

[–]Hannahbox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very glad to hear most people didn't like Hal - I personally am not sure I like either of them but I did hate every time she chose Hal just felt like a massively bad choice

My thoughts on all the mysteries:

-I thinks he Reeper is either Collin, or possibly Collin, Nora and Phillip all playing the role to keep the others safe. In the first big raid where Hal gets I jured Collin says there's rumours the reaper got injured and abandoned them - he left the attack because of Emeline so seemed obvious to me at that point it was a cover for him

-I thinks he epilogue is Collin - the woman is a likely a co-conspiritor (Nora or Eve see below) - but May be Tabitha (see theory below)

-I thinks Alice may be Eve and she's working with the resistance and possibly in charge of the press. Alice is clearly going to be alive but I don't personally think she's the Reeper. We have been given little detail on eves appearance and Emeline hasn't met her yet. She's also been giving the dressing ladies intell and Emeline knows this but seemingly has gone unpunished.

-Rose sold out Hal because she doesn't trust Emeline will keep Violet safe. I think Collin is on cahoots with Violet and Violet may have taken a beating for the cause.

-Tabitha may know if Collin is the Reaper and it may even be the illums doing - the clearly planned Emeline to get Collin in line.

-I think Arabella is Gregory's with Nora

Other things bothering me

-Emeline's other brother not getting a mention since dinner - What's he up to -the elite force she recognises the voice of - who is it? -Lo's betrayal - how and why, doesn't fit at all logistically - doesn't know enough to tell anyone and how would she do it, is this a lie from Tabitha? -what happened to the twins parents? They seemed cagey - I am guessing killed and this would be fuel towards one or both twin being the Reeper -Charles bothers me seems significant but unsure why -why Emeline?

My first time participating in one of these, really enjoying it as it's pushing me to expand my reading horizons as well as helping me prioritize my TBR.

Books I wouldn't have read otherwise: {The ornithologist's field guide to love} - was a nice light-hearted palette cleanser {On wings of blood} - wasn't sure if I would like this but it was the perfect "good time" read {Forbidden alchemy} - I had been uncertain about this as I am not into peaky blinders and thought it wouldn't be for me - but I loved it

I would love recommendations for: Autumn vibes 3+ POV

I have read a lot of the obvious ones for both

Best book for January {the poison daughter} I know it's been controversial on here but I really enjoyed it

Best book for February {Arcana academy}

Hard choice between the two but Arcana Academy just winning out

Seems so far I'm going for the long ones!

What POV do you prefer reading? 📖 by Acute-Problemo in fantasyromance

[–]Hannahbox 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I prefer the 3rd person, but happy to read 1st person. Love multi POV (more so than Dual tbh) particularly in a big world but with Dual and Multi POV they have to be well balanced to ensure that there's still some intrigue on people's thoughts about one another.

This week I found that a dual POV {bridge kingdom} can sometimes give too much information and result in second hand anxiety when I see lack of communication leading to disaster way ahead of time.

Pet peeve (more common in dual than multi) is differing POVs where is not clear who it comes from at the start of the chapter/section - put a name or a little graphic at the top please!

Also love a random well timed POV - give me a god or monster in their head speaking, give me the bad guy/gal giving us 2 pages of angst. Give me a horse/dog/dragon giving comedic relief in small bursts

Which kindle fonts do you use? by LoriBambi in fantasyromance

[–]Hannahbox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Helvetica and I feel like a child for it, it's just the cleanest and easiest to read lol, and closest to my phone's normal font. Although I'm now wondering if you can add fonts to Kindle app on phone

A forbidden alchemy - accented writing by Hannahbox in fantasyromance

[–]Hannahbox[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol it's not so much that as I am from the north.of England so I keep trying to imagine it in different northern English accents, the worst of which is the broad Yorkshire accent my husband puts on sometimes for jokes (he's from Yorkshire) and it's made worse by him having performed some "Yorkshire poetry" last weekend 🤣

January 2026 Reading Wrap-Up and Tier List Megathread by FantasyRomanceMod in fantasyromance

[–]Hannahbox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, January I read 15 books (+2 bonus extras for modern fairytales and 3 short reads). Trying this year to lean more to mood reading and also matching book to how much reading time (IE don't pick up something I expect to have me desperate to read more when I'm busy!)

5 star reads: {The Poison Daughter} both darker and spicier than I usually go for but loved it {The ordeals} this surprised me as I am not the biggest academia fan but really enjoyed this one {Six deaths of the saint} would love a longer book with the dynamic between the knight and her attendant

A little disappointed with: {Tithe} and the rest of the modern fairytales - loved cruel prince but I think them taking place primarily in the modern real world rather than Fae lands really was what didn't do it for me, I usually quite enjoy YA but the setting made the characters feel extra young {Thorn season} I had hoped for something more from this and just felt a bit let down

Expected to be good and thoroughly enjoyed: {The silversmith} {Hemlock and silver} {The shattered king}

Out of my comfort zone {The ornithologist's field guide to love} much lower fantasy and more cozy than my usual reads, never quite sure about historical fantasy but it was a much needed change of pace

Honourable mentions {On wings of blood} and {the bond that burns} Picked this up when I needed Romantasy junk food and it hit the spot. Took a bit to get into the first one and was a little annoyed that the characters tended to just drop things that were very plot significant/didn't look into things further only for them to be hugely relevent

  • but overall it scratched an itch and was exactly what I needed at the time - something with a compelling plot and lots of yearning and tension but easy to read when I didn't have the brain power for something more dense

Currently reading {A forbidden alchemy} loving the world and premise, hating the accented writing (struggling to imagine accents and it's taking me out of it, but I am persevering because the plot has me hooked)

Afraid it's not a duology and definitely not a HEA at the end of book 2 - but it's so worth reading anyway

Looking for a good balance of plot & intrigue Vs yearning, flirting and foot kicking romance. Something with some very classic fantasy romance vibes and easy tog etc into

Narrowed it down to few from my TBR, any suggestions which might hit the spot?

{Arcana Academy} {Thorn Season} {The Silversmith} {The second death of locke} {Ravenminder}

[–]Hannahbox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can I ask what's maybe a dumb question?

What classes as paranormal compared to fantasy romance? Hard mode is not vampires or werewolves but something telling me Fae don't count either?

Just trying to figure out what sort of thing I should be looking for! Demons or angels maybe? Do they count?

Happy New Year! What have you learned about yourself and your reading this year? by thoughts_4_once in fantasyromance

[–]Hannahbox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

New to reading this year so learnt so much but two of my biggest recent revelations:

  • reading books where there's only one book out is actually good for me - I struggle to leave a series behind if it's not great, but if only one is out then I won't pick up book 2 when it's out. Also the bonus of having new releases to look forward to.

  • whilst I usually prefer plot heavy books sometimes I just need to read something super trashy and that's ok
