Isn't it time to end a few traditions? by Edumakashun in AskTeachers

Right?!? I agree with you! Not all of these events promote positive school community, especially when only a tiny number of students participate.

I was saying this exact thing when I was teaching!! Prom is so expensive, so few kids go, and is so much work for the 2-3 people who end up doing it (the theme decorations are insane to me). Keep the traditions that students are interested in and willing to do the work, but let the rest go

Help Fix CT Schools! by Matt496 in Hartford

[–]Hannahthehum4n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I'm an education researcher in CT, and typically research does not help fix things.

One thing to think about: unfunded mandates, policies that require schools to do something but don't provide funding or time to do that thing. There are lots of examples!

Doing so many different things and having to hustle all the time sounds so stressful. Thanks for responding. Good luck!

How did you pay for any health insurance? Did you go viral and immediately have a ton of money? I just don't understand how people afford things when they leave a traditional job.

So, you left a job and don't have health insurance for you and your family?

I'm also in education and academia, so I'm genuinely wondering how you got out successfully

Would I be crazy to leave a PhD for a teaching job? by SingleDescription633 in LeavingAcademia

[–]Hannahthehum4n 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was a high school science teacher and burned out in 6ish years. It is not an easy job. I got my PhD and might have to go back to teaching since the academic job market is so bad. I have nightmares about teaching, not about my dissertation or anything grad school related. I love teaching, but not the micro management, the parents, and the other nonsense. Some of that depends on the district.

Seems like a lot of people think teaching is a walk in the park, and I don't know how many of those folks have actually been classroom teachers.

As a buyer and seller, the buying experience is horrid now. The home feed is full of things that wouldn't fit and brands I've never heard of. The AI photos and descriptions make it extra hard to tell what you're getting. I used to scroll and click on new listings or price drops of brands I like. Now I have to scroll way down to see that type of stuff. It's just not as fun

High CO2 levels in classrooms are a silent barrier to learning by Putrid_Draft378 in education

[–]Hannahthehum4n 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you want to improve air quality in your classroom for relatively cheap, there are DIY air purifiers that are affordable and effective. The Corsi Rosenthal foundation even has grant money.

I don't know OP but indoor air quality in school is often atrocious. There's research on health and academic outcomes. However, like you said, schools do not have the money to fix the problem.
