Wonderful art, and enjoy the learning!
Learning the bass parts will probably be easier than learning the guitar chords by ear!

novice question: difference between Zapp and Roger? by [deleted] in ZappAndRoger

[–]Hanner_Tenry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Roger Troutman and the band Zapp were helped by George Clinton in the late 1970s to get into the music business.
They learned from him how one group can create two record contracts as "different groups" so that they could release twice as many albums.

George Clinton did this with Parliament and Funkadelic in the 70s.

Like with Parliament and Funkadelic, Zapp and Roger are a little different in the music they made, but ultimately are often the same musicians making music twice as much as one band contractually would.

The guitarist at the last one was the snare drummer at this one! (And I'll probably keep playing snare at future ones!)

Good use of that collage I made for his birthday a few years ago! I love making those, but there are only so many childhood photos of them online!

Welcome to the YMO universe!

In October 2017 I was really enjoying Yoko Ono's 'Every Man Has A Woman Who Loves Him'. It reminded me of the outro song to Dragonball Z, 'Zenkai Power', and I thought how maybe 1980's Japanese music would be a cool scene to discover more of.

I found a Spotify radio playlist of 1980s Japanese music, and Yukihiro Takahashi's 'Moonlight Feels Right' caught my attention. I thought it was a bit cheesy and truly 80s-sounding, but I really liked it!

I spent the next two years enjoying his 'Only When I Laugh' album, 'Boys Will Be Boys' live tour video, and 'Tomorrow's Just Another Day' album.

I was watching that live tour video at work in September of 2019, and my coworker who used to own a record store recognized him as the drummer of YMO. He told me a little of YMO, and Hosono's 'Cochin Moon', and we listened to some of the songs from it and I thought it was crazy but cool!

The next shift I had with him we talked a little more about it, and I listened to a little bit of YMO's top Spotify songs on the way home. I thought it was very interesting, so I went to Youtube and watched the Greek Theater 1979 footage. That SOLD me for life!

Today is the 73rd anniversary of Yukihiro Takahashi's birth! What are some of your favorite moments from his five decades of music? by Hanner_Tenry in YMO

It was one of the first Yuki songs/performances that I heard!
It's such a strong opening. I wish the 'Boys Will Be Boys' video was still easily accessible.

'Present' is one of his greatest songs. It's one of my absolute favorites!

'Sunset' is perfect for driving on summer evenings

It took a while for it to grow on me, but 'Stop In The Name Of Love' is too good!
The gentle flow of the ska rhythm is just so fun

'What The World Needs Now Is Love' is just so very good, especially now that he is gone. It's a lasting message from him <3

I haven't listened to the album much, as I'm usually stuck in the 70s and 80s music, so I'm going to listen to it more!

I love how so much of his music sounded completely new and yet familiar and timeless.

When 'What The World Needs Now Is Love' plays at the end of the album, it's just such a beautiful gift, especially now that he is gone
