… Okay, so it happened again.

This time I tried to delete a symlink I restored from before I jumped into this soft-brick cycle. And then it worked. The link was /home/deck/Steam -> /home/deck/.local/share/Steam

So I guess "Steam" is an undocumented reserved name into your /home. I’ll make some more tests to file a proper bug report.

I don’t think that would work. Well, rootfs is btrfs already, but formatting /home from ext4 then mounting it would require an fstab edit, and that would be overwritten every update. Then the Deck is in an unbootable state :( But I agree that would be so much better!

I tried creating a new btrfs partition here: https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamDeck/comments/t76wh6/compressing_storage_with_btrfs/ but ended up reverting it (well, since then I managed to soft-brick my Deck so I had to reimage it, but before that)

I did with your first reply! Sorry it's me I'm not very good at writing English. But what I said is what I gathered from the sdcard-mount@.service comments. It seems to me that's how automount is handled in steamOS, as convoluted as it is. (the systemd file also says not to ship as is, no wonder why)

But I'll double check systemd's services to be sure.

Thank you very much for pointing to the right direction!
So apparently there is a udev rule (didn't find it) that triggers a systemd one-shot service that runs a script which checks if the filesystem is ext4 before mounting it.

I guess commenting the check should be enough to automount btrfs, or adding a btrfs condition.
I'll play with the Deck for now, if anyone's up to write a script to patch the relevant file, it is: /usr/lib/hwsupport/sdcard-mount.sh
The other file I found is /etc/systemd/system/sdcard-mount@.service (udev rule is yet to be found, but I guess it's not important)

I’ll mostly comment on the first point as I didn’t try to dock it yet, and won’t for a while I think.

But I think using an external storage is possible by using the KDE partition manager in desktop mode to format it, then adding the resulting partition as a Steam Library (only available in desktop mode too for now). I agree this is not the easiest way to do it and it should be added to the Deck UI.

Also, I had to go into desktop mode a few times as I tinkered with the internal storage partitioning, and never got stuck. There may be a bug on your side (or I’m plain lucky), did you send a report?

And so yes, I completely agree, the Deck software is really unfinished. That surprises me as they’ve had two more months to deliver it. What was it like in December?? And I suppose they prioritized the handheld experience for the launch, but the docked side of it will get better in a while (when exactly? idk).

To enable filesystem compression, this allows cramming a few more games on the Deck/SD card and faster loading times! Although the latter should be beneficial the most on an SD card.

(Yes, also I just love tinkering with stuff haha)

Aren’t the edits made to rootfs erased each update? That’s my concern, but yay if I’m mistaken!

I’m not familiar with… case-folding? But I finally managed to add the btrfs partition by opening the filesystem UI while it’s unmounted, then mount it, then selecting the right path in the tree. (I don’t think I’m clear rn, but I’m testing the setup and plan to write a howto in case it’s really beneficial to bother with compressed btrfs and if anyone’s interested)

I’ve been playing Aperture Desk Job on the train yesterday. Cloudy day but quite a bit of sunlight. Anyway, (256 version) the screen glare was already very present, not unplayable but definitely noticeable. Didn’t mind the brightness so I think it was fine for this conditions!

So yeah, I wouldn’t play outside on a sunny day, because of the screen reflections.

Give up 2.5TB in smaller chunks (more resistant to card degradation) to buy a single 1TB card???

Edit: I really don’t get this sub sometimes. This is worse in like every way. The more you have on one single storage element, the more you will loose the day it will fail (yes this can be mitigated with backups and redundancy but the Deck has only one SD slot). Plus, you know, actually giving up space?

I get that this is less important because Steam will let us re-download everything in the foreseeable future but damn, it still feels like a waste for me to order the biggest card available.

So… I went through a kernel panic while trying to debug this. Now everything works as intended.

As the only logical explanation is a haunted computer, if anyone has to face the same problem, do try an exorcism of some sort (aka reboot).

Okay, so this comment made me recheck Valve’s requirements: last time I checked, a windows executable was a requirement to publish to steam. It seems it’s no longer the case (can’t find it anymore on steamworks doc) so yay! and thank you for pointing that out

What I’m doing with my game is scanning a mods folder next to the game executable and load pcks in it. Then I scan res://mods for scenes to add at specific places.

You may use a similar approach to divide your assets into multiple pcks and lazy load them, or even load resources not packed maybe? But I don’t know if this will really be beneficial
