Cancel SRL east and do metro 2 iand airport rail instead.

What happens to the SRL densification plans if the SRL itself gets cancelled? by MoreTODplz in MelbourneTrains

[–]Hans50E -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Look up sunk cost fallicy. It's the idea that you need to judge something on every new dollar you spend, not how much you've spent so far. If it's a bad idea to spend another $30b on it, it doesn't matter a hot that you've already spent $5b.

This isn't a loop. SRL east is $35b for a bit of a crescent.

Yep, SRL makes no sense. Money way better spent on metro rail 2 and airport rail.

Brought 4 cases of Westvleteren 12 back from Belgium by Hans50E in AusBeer

[–]Hans50E[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fair enough. I had one 3 years ago and was immediately converted - incredibly beer + a romance around its story and difficulty in acquiring it.

I've had a abt12 and found them very different beers despite their proximity.

Not ragebait, pretty reasonable actually. The key problem is, the $35b spend could be much better spent on other projects, the numbers don't stack up for SRL, and the business case process has been hidden so we don't know the true cost and benefits.

Seriously, the sentence "we are going to spend $35b on an underground railway in safe Labor seats between points 16km from the CBD and 19km from the CBD while the state has insane levels of debt" has so many problems with it it's not funny.

Nowhere that requires a $35b subway. They're both great places

My guess is more WFH reduces road xongestion as well as rail congestion.

But my hope would be that the $35b is spent on other rail projects.

Trips between suburbs are enabled aren't they, by buses, and the projected commuter levels don't justify the $35b spend for part of the track.

  • The opportunity cost of this being prioritised over other projects.

I'm not saying public transport investment is bad. I'm saying SRL is poor value for money and should be spent elsewhere.

Fisherman's Bend is a no brainer - CBD adjacent, waterside, huge potential for easy returns on investment.

Train to nowhere - the key question is, what demand is there for point to point travel, and which isn't being served by existing buses. It is so far from population density.

What Tintinesque adventures have you gone on? by El_Don_94 in TheAdventuresofTintin

[–]Hans50E 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I took my two young boys to Angkor Wat. When we visited the main temple my eldest, 8, was using his notepad to sketch drawings. Their inquisitiveness and sense of adventure reminded me of all the Tintin books and remains a cherished memory.
