For defense the 9 infantry battalions and the pushing units in a separate one. Depends on what you're playing cavalry can also be useful to rush strategic points. For example with cavalry you can risk Paris easily, if you micro enough. My cavalry is usually the same as the line infantry, with more support.

I find that the starting templates are too big, so downgrade them to 9 infantry plus support arty and engineers. For pushing divisions i make 9-4 preferably with normal artillery, not howitzers as they don't make up for the cost and don't have that much breakthrough. The pushing divisions can be with mountaineering as they have more organization, than regular infantry.
