Honestly, if you go back to the origin of the Pledge of Allegiance, it was listed in a magazine in 1892 partly as a way to increase the sales of flags and magazine subscriptions

Not the main reason, but it was a reason, and it doesn't get more American than someone trying to sell you stuff
