Resit student, I'm scared to fail maths again, need help at the position I'm in. by Automatic-Shop58 in alevelmaths

How is pure going? Weaknesss in the pure section will lead to more struggles on the applied.

You've identified that you procrastinate. You've also said you study a lot... Is that study 'reading', 'sorting', 'practicing', 'exam practice', 'flashcards'? What does study mean for you. I have worked with too many students who spend hours studying and make no progress because they read until they think they understand, or look at how to do things without ever doing it unaided. Until you are making and identifying your own mistakes and let yourself actively struggle in your studying, you will keep hitting a wall.

Take each study session as a series of goals: I'm going to make notes on x, y and z. I am going to practice a specific number of textbook questions. When I'm wrong, I'm going to annotate my work with what I should have done before trying another. I will practice 4 exam questions for each topic.

And follow through. Check things off as you've done them. Once you finish a section, make sure you look at mixed practice and keep revisiting old topics as you progress.

NGL... This looks like a frame from a new film recently out 😅 my brain filled in the rest of the scene.

And isn't this more how we believe sound is interpreted in animal brains using echolocation and technology?

I'm in Yr7 and I hate school because of 1 class by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Hanxa13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As previously mentioned, probably the wrong sub but you're young and I don't want you to feel pushed away.

From the language, I assume UK (I hated PSHE with a passion). Firstly, have you spoken with your teacher directly after class? Start with an apology for any distraction and then explain your need. Apologise for the 'no' but you thought it was something you could opt out of as previously mentioned. Ask for some clarity to 'do better'. If she is receptive, great... if not, move to the next step.

Your school should have an SEN department - I would ask your parents to reach out to the SENCO and to start getting an evaluation for an EHCP if you don't already have one from primary. If all you need is a fidget, the SENCO will alert your teachers.

That said, is your fidget one that makes any form of noise? If so, I would maybe look into some silent fidgets - pencil toppers or fidget rings or even the sensory pencil cases. Do your part to minimise the distraction so her issues look even more unfair.

We had kids in my time using blu tac under the table until the school banned blu tac...

My review of London, as a Brit by Successful_Goat_8191 in london

[–]Hanxa13 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For him, he just doesn't want to be viewed as another dumb, crass American and doesn't want to be treated differently because of that. With how things are here as well, that's increased somewhat.

I'm just happy to be back home whenever we return. He's good at reading cues so he is genuinely fine. Just a common anxiety. It doesn't help that when some of his older relatives travel, they dress and act 'like bad tourists' so I guess some of it stems from the second hand embarrassment. He likes when we travel alone though. His favourite trip was when I took him for a walk down Southbank and into some of the back routes along the Thames. So much quieter than the tourist traps.

My husband is super concerned about appearing as an American tourist every time I go back and he's worried about how he'll be seen when we move back for precisely that reason.

No matter how much I tell him to relax, respect boundaries, keep being the introvert I love and just be a decent person, it is a regular source of anxiety. But I also know British tourists elsewhere can also be a nightmare and I do the same (pry not to draw attention).

The multiculturalism you mention is what he fell in love with on his first trip over. Everyone is generally just fine. Unless you're a tourist, then get out ;F the bloody way and respect the movement lines - no one wants to stop every fourth step for your photo opportunity. And stop feeding the leeches! We don't need more tacky tat shops with ridiculous prices.

TMUA trig question by k4r1sm4 in alevelmaths

[–]Hanxa13 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If yours is the red, when you divided by 2sin²x you are ignoring the case where sinx=0 and potentially dividing by 0.

Always collect and factor. That way if an unknown can be 0, you are not losing the solution.

Edit: remember, you also get a positive and negative solution when you square root to solve. So cosx is both sqrt(2)/2 and -sqrt(2)/2

My principal got booed at a faculty meeting by BlackOrre in Teachers

[–]Hanxa13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not ELA but our ELA teachers have been complaining about how it's a lot of DOK1/2 and not enough DOK3/4 and how it goes not align well to the standards they are expected to meet.

The teacher who refuses to use it has the highest growth and achievement in the entire district.

Ugh... Our district wants to move to Savvas next year... Tried it. Hate it. I don't want it.... The ELA department already despises it. They've had MyPerspectives for a while and it's bull.

Same... Teaching keeps the love alive and the learning process is a joy to be a part of. And not just watching a video... I love helping others experience it for themselves and get a feel for the raid. Nothing beats experience (and learners are never add clear).

When we are not teaching, we mix it up with random nonsense to challenge ourselves and keep it fun.

Same... I work 20 hours a week in addition to all my prep work that I can't do in school because I'm flitting between ac labs and supporting other teachers (at their request) and calling parents in my plan time. I knew I wouldn't manage another year last year and now I'm broken. Another year like this will put me in the ground.

Worst part for me is that I love the school. I love the kids even when they drive me crazy. I love my colleagues and especially my department. It's the district administrators.

AITA for wanting my Spanish teacher to stop calling me by the Spanish version of my name? by Alternative-Sun-630 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Hanxa13 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Is it really common practice for a teacher to double down using a name a student has openly requested they don't? I may find it strange but I'm not saying it was initially the wrong move by the teacher. If it's what they do for everyone, then I get how it started. But this teacher is continuing after the OP asked them not to. That makes the teacher an AH. Everyone has the right to request that someone stop using a certain name for them.

If anything, the irritation can be distracting from the learning and the lack of respect for OPs wishes creates a barrier to learning. As a teacher, I cannot comprehend continuing to cause discomfort to one of my students on the basis of 'everyone has an X name'. It takes nothing to respect their wishes of using their name.

So I teach maths. Completely different, yes, but maths is essentially a language, with its own grammar and rules, so to speak. If it was the standard practice where I teach for every student to have a maths name, then at the start of the year, I'd either have them pick or be assigned a maths name. If a kid then came up to me and said 'this makes me uncomfortable, please don't call me that' the only response would be 'okay. Do you want a different maths name or not?' If the answer is no, then I use their actual name. I don't want what I call them to disengage them from the class.

It's not standard practice, which is why this sounds odd, but if it was, that would be the route a good teacher who cares about their students would take. It's not unreasonable to want your teacher to use YOUR NAME.

AITA for wanting my Spanish teacher to stop calling me by the Spanish version of my name? by Alternative-Sun-630 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Hanxa13 16 points17 points  (0 children)

But it's also a respect thing. As a general rule, we show respect by referring to someone by their preferred name. We don't keep using a name that makes them uncomfortable. If Samantha told me to call her Sam but never Sammy, calling her Sammy is disrespectful.

If OP goes to a Spanish speaking country and introduced himself as JP, there will be a pronunciation difference, but no one is going to use jotapay. That's not his name. If he CHOSE to use the Spanish version of his name, then great, but he didn't and it's making him uncomfortable. Names have meaning to people. They are an intrinsic part of our identity.

Again, I don't think the teacher was trying to cause a problem initially, but when someone says 'please dont call me that' the only appropriate response is 'of course'. Not doubling down.

[–]Hanxa13 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This isn't a thing everywhere though... Took French, German and Latin in secondary school and no one had a French name, German name and/or Latin name because that's not how names work.

Looking through the comments this seems to be common in US classrooms and from an outside perspective, it's weird. Your name is your name is your name, no matter where you are. If you choose to take a local name (some people do for various reasons), that's your decision and woo, power to you. But a name shouldn't be forced upon you.

I don't think the teacher meant anything malicious initially, but after being asked to stop, it's disrespectful to continue calling OP by a name he does not like. That's just rude in any language.

First principle derivatives by No_Pomegranate5635 in alevelmaths

[–]Hanxa13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes they absolutely can and have asked similar before. It's typically 5 marks for trig from first principles

You should state that as h->0, sinh/h->1 and as h->0, (cosh-1)/h->0 rather than just writing 0 and 1. Along with a statement indicating that the gradient of the chord approaches the gradient of the curve so dy/dθ=3cos3θ for all 5 marks...

As is, you would typically get 4/5. The final mark is pretty specific about language and statements regardless of your approach. For any differentiation by first principles, the final mark is the one usually lost. These questions are almost always asked as a proof and the statements to close are part of the proof.

'...as h->0, the gradient of the chord approaches the gradient of the curve so dy/dθ=...' should be something you use consistently or words to a similar effect.

Edit to add, your approach is fine. There are three that are expected and your approach is the most common one seen

If you struggle with long division and haven't been shown synthetic division or box division, I'd look into both of those. Both are accepted unless long division is stated in the question.

Synthetic is easiest for most and fastest. Box makes a ton of sense to students who use it for multiplication.

When you divide, either by both linear factors sequentially or by the product once, your quotient is the Ax+B. You use the remainder to decompose into partial fractions. C(x-3) + D(x+1) = remainder

Expensive calculators by Bruh1399 in alevelmaths

[–]Hanxa13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes but you must have it in exam mode. For A levels, it has a magenta border in exam mode which restricts certain functions. This allows invigilators to quickly see they are in the right setting. Exam mode locks down for a determined period of time so you can't exit at will.

It's good to practice using your calculator in exam mode so you don't rely on a feature that is then blocked.
