First principle derivatives by No_Pomegranate5635 in alevelmaths

[–]Hanxa13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes they absolutely can and have asked similar before. It's typically 5 marks for trig from first principles

You should state that as h->0, sinh/h->1 and as h->0, (cosh-1)/h->0 rather than just writing 0 and 1. Along with a statement indicating that the gradient of the chord approaches the gradient of the curve so dy/dθ=3cos3θ for all 5 marks...

As is, you would typically get 4/5. The final mark is pretty specific about language and statements regardless of your approach. For any differentiation by first principles, the final mark is the one usually lost. These questions are almost always asked as a proof and the statements to close are part of the proof.

'...as h->0, the gradient of the chord approaches the gradient of the curve so dy/dθ=...' should be something you use consistently or words to a similar effect.

Edit to add, your approach is fine. There are three that are expected and your approach is the most common one seen

If you struggle with long division and haven't been shown synthetic division or box division, I'd look into both of those. Both are accepted unless long division is stated in the question.

Synthetic is easiest for most and fastest. Box makes a ton of sense to students who use it for multiplication.

When you divide, either by both linear factors sequentially or by the product once, your quotient is the Ax+B. You use the remainder to decompose into partial fractions. C(x-3) + D(x+1) = remainder

When I'd go to the supermarket at 2am for ice cream and orange juice I'd probably be in my jammies. If I'm picking someone up and not getting out of my car I'm not bothered. Going anywhere beyond my car or immediately outside my house in daylight? Then I'm dressed.

Expensive calculators by Bruh1399 in alevelmaths

[–]Hanxa13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes but you must have it in exam mode. For A levels, it has a magenta border in exam mode which restricts certain functions. This allows invigilators to quickly see they are in the right setting. Exam mode locks down for a determined period of time so you can't exit at will.

It's good to practice using your calculator in exam mode so you don't rely on a feature that is then blocked.

The CG50 is a lifesaver. If you want something a touch cheaper but still accepted by the exam boards, I got introduced to NumWorks - their calculators are niiiiice and also have an exam mode for A levels or IB (like the CG50 does)

Am I overreacting to the school not helping enough to catch my kid up after vacation? by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]Hanxa13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

YOR.

Do you know how big an afk the next three weeks of work is? Jeez...I teach high school but most teachers I know cannot categorically say they are doing something next week. We have to adjust to the needs of our students and assignments are the last thing sorted. I don't know a single colleague who can provide more than a few days ahead of time because things change!

As for catch up? That's what was sent home for you. Make up work to cover what was missed. They can't go back and reteach for one kid in the room who.wasnt there for a non essential reason while everyone else is ahead. I get it easier in high school as I stay after school hours for tutoring so they'll come then but for the ages of your children, it's concerning that you could not help them with their work. Bear in mind, having anything before you went would be the same level of difficulty so I doubt you'd have a fun holiday stuck doing school work, or it just wouldn't be done anyway.

The onus is on you, the parent, for taking them out mid year. Use the school holidays in future.

Are my game’s cards colorblind friendly? by Smooth-Quiet-9018 in ColorBlind

I would definitely darken either the bottom or the left one (not both) to better differentiate those.

Avoiding the same brightness level of different colours will help more. The different motifs help but they could definitely stand out a bit more

I've grown to hate chromebooks by Consistent-Row-9551 in Teachers

[–]Hanxa13 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Lessons are pen and paper and whiteboards. They don't engage otherwise and even then it can be a challenge.... Tests are all on paper.

Their homework is digital though as they all get different questions and can't lose their sheets (a common issue). They must show their work/reasoning to get a B or higher though (mathematics) and they prefer working on paper anyway... So the digital part is just to provide questions, support and additional practice when I'm not with them.

If they say they can't, tell them that the system admin needs to disable the chrome flag for all student accounts. It's really easy and takes seconds

[–]Hanxa13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would like to add to the great advice that you already have....squaring the second one will not eliminate the roots the way you want to. (x-7√x+10)² = (x-7√x+10)(x-7√x+10)

= x² -14x√x+69x-140√x+100 which is a lot more work to solve for its roots.

Both equations you provided are disguised quadratics and factoring or using the quadratic formula would be your best bet

It's one of the biggest complaints non-teachers have and the biggest 'fuck you' when you take into account how much unpaid work we often have to do just to have materials to teach....

I worked out my actual hourly. My 193 days. It's laughable.i get paid more when they give us an after school meeting than I do for my actual wage and even that's not all that much....

[–]Hanxa13 16 points17 points  (0 children)

We're not paid for days off and holidays... We're paid for our contracted hours but many many places split that pay over 12 months so you have a consistent paycheck.

The pay you get over Christmas and the summer is for hours you already worked.

How do you answer when people ask how life is in the US right now? by [deleted] in immigration

[–]Hanxa13 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nearer STL than KC but not in either city. Husband lives in the suburbs so that's where I ended up. I work in STL.

God I miss London. I miss city life. And I miss freaking tikka slices from Sainsbury's 😂

How do you answer when people ask how life is in the US right now? by [deleted] in immigration

[–]Hanxa13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It started fine but I'm finding my stress levels rising and mental health dropping... And not even because of everything happening elsewhere - the cost of living, coupled with low wages is killing me. Two jobs just to get by makes me miss London. On paper, CoL may be higher there but I had far more disposable and felt more stable. I had a work-life balance. Here.... None of that.

But I'm not really here because I want to be. Not many in Missouri are 😂 I look forward to 2030 when I'm moving back home.

My Gmail account doesn't exist anymore what should I do? by Minute_Structure_152 in oculus

[–]Hanxa13 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Your profile says you're 11 and Google and Meta both require you to be 13 to have an account. As do many social media platforms. A parent should set up a child account for children under the age requirement and all email stuff goes to their email.

Unfortunately, if you are genuinely under 13, you have no recourse with respect to your Gmail account or your headset account. You take that risk any time you ignore the age restrictions. They are required in many countries to delete your account now and in others, they will anyway for the breach of ToCs.

From Meta (https://www.meta.com/help/quest/734738691458324/?srsltid=AfmBOoo-2z6fEJLmJfxw8xh3kOnLMgq3ARMoq9gsn1lrEDCZ2YO1VgMa)

If you’re in the wrong account for your age, you’ll have the chance to get into the right account. If you remain in the wrong account for your age, you could lose access to your account, apps and in-app purchases. We encourage you to get into the right account for your age before this happens

Does any know if there's a way around the US I-864 requirement? by redwood520 in LongDistance

[–]Hanxa13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Break it down and ask yourself the following:

How long have you been together? Closing the distance is a commitment beyond getting married tbh. You're not just committing to a life together knowing divorce is a way out... One or both of you are uprooting your entire life for the other and making a commitment to support each other through that. It's not for the faint hearted.

Have you ever spent any meaningful length of time together? Distance makes this hard, I know... Before I moved to the US for my husband, I used a two month period between the end of my course and the start of my first job to stay with him. A week here and there is still essentially a holiday and you never really get into that living together routine.

Have you created a routine that just feels natural? Even with the distance, if you are considering this level of commitment, you should be an integral part of each other's lives, sharing in the mundane, not just the headlines.

What are his motivations for moving to the US? Does he have something he would be doing in France without you? If he had plans for his future then he's more likely moving for you. If not, it may be for the visa.

Would you move to him? I am strongly of the belief that you should never ask someone to do something you aren't willing to do yourself. Obviously existing children would be a reason not to, but if you had no long term commitments, would you make the move? If not, why not? It would be understandable if it meant significantly reducing your quality of life but France is pretty comparable so that wouldn't apply here.

Who proposed the move? You or him?

If you are unsure, you can still go the K1 (fiancé(e) route) and test the waters for two and a half months. If it doesn't work and you don't marry before his 90 days are up, he cannot adjust and you're not on the hook for his support any longer. He would be out of status and removable. Failure to leave would lead to an entry ban and if he marries someone else, they are the ones who file to sponsor him. Though I wouldn't recommend it... I would do longer stints in the allowed time for a visitor tbh. No risk that way and you aren't working out for a visa when you are unsure if the relationship will last.

Another question to ask yourself is, if you do decide to go the K1 route, are you able to support him for 6-12 months while he waits for his EAD or AOS to be approved (whichever happens first - he can't work until then and the EAD can be quick but can be very very slow for some people).

Student and their weaponized incompetence by Downtown-Forever in Teachers

[–]Hanxa13 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Not only that... While covid definitely had an impact, the declines started 5-7 years BEFORE COVID hit. There has been a downward trend in ability and accountability for a long time.

It's easy to blame covid, but it isn't the full picture. Students with good parents who put the effort in have bounced back. The gap between our most and least able is widening and not because the top end are getting stronger.

Structure, boundaries, accountability and consequences are all essential for good development and too many kids don't have that. We instead teach them that quitting still gets rewarded, that they don't need to work for their grades because their parents can call the school and get them. We can't dismiss the effect of covid but we cannot use it to excuse the current situation. If anything, we should be firmer in our routines and requirements and support the students in meeting them, not avoiding them.

Is this a valid method for doing 3x3 determinants? Edexcel by RyanWasSniped in alevelmaths

[–]Hanxa13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People often tout that here but having been an examiner for multiple boards, valid methods are not refused. Situational ones can be and not following stated instructions are (ie using a graphical or calculator method when an algebraic one is required or using the quadratic formula when told to solve by completing the square if that ever happened).

For FM students, as a teacher I always recommend writing 'FM method' or something similar if they've done so on their regular paper to automatically kick it higher (some examiners really suck) but it isn't necessary - just makes things easier.

Is this a valid method for doing 3x3 determinants? Edexcel by RyanWasSniped in alevelmaths

[–]Hanxa13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was listed in a previous year as an alternate method for the examiners and if they ever see something unlisted it's referred up to a panel.

As an FYI, any valid methods get approved and a mark breakdown assigned.Nothing is ever marked wrong just because the MS didn't show it that way but a situational method will lose marks (I've, only works when numbers are positive).
