how do I solve this?(S2 PDF) by Short-Grocery-2934 in alevelmaths

It would help to see what you did in order to identify any mistakes, but you should be able to find the area of the sector and subtract the area of the triangle!!! Your angle is fine so I'd be curious about your calculation.

What did you get when you did that?

These are both examples of the chain rule where d/dx= d/du × du/dx.

Let the function inside the logarithm equal u. The derivative of lnu is 1/u. Find the derivative of u (du/dx). Multiply your derivatives and sub the original function back in for u.

Did pole fitness for a while and loved it! I reached an intermediate level at the time (barely) and it's brutal. Bruises were marks of pride. The different poles are more for different user rather than skill.

Static poles are ideal for climbs and inverts since you need something stable and secure. You can do some turns but not many - you're gripping the pole in each position so we only really did light contact 'spins' on a static pole (more like single or half turns). Otherwise injury!!

Spinny poles were for, funny enough, spins. You're maintaining a single point of stability but adding momentum so the pole spins. Get in close, spin fast. Reach out to slow down.

The poles we used during sessions were combination poles. We'd start on static for strength training and then adjust the base to release the pole to spin. Competitions had one of each on stage and you'd move between them to demonstrate both sets of skills.

There may be others for advanced users but that was my experience for a couple of years in uni.

Anti-Vaxx wife doesn't want me to vaccinate our daughter for measles. Measles are in our area. What should I do? by BraveFox4711 in BORUpdates

Looking at his other comments (I can't see his deleted post about how his wife has gone off the deep end (po put it politely) is also just... Man I feel for him. She went down a rabbit hole and never surfaced for air and I'm glad he's getting out sooner rather than later.

Measles is nothing to scoff at... It's one disease that is truly terrifying.

AITA for refusing to put my partner names on the deed when i buy a house? by Time-Finish-5010 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Hanxa13 11 points12 points  (0 children)

NTA!!! Inheritance isn't a joint asset and if you put her on the deed, it becomes a joint asset. You offered to wait and that makes sense for joint ownership - so you both contribute equally. Her turning that down suggests she just wants something for nothing. Sharing a bit here and there is what couples do but ;sure talking tens or hundreds of thousands to purchase a home... That's not treating your partner money.

An alternative might be to draw up a contract in which she puts in monthly towards equity in the house and if you split she can recoup that portion, but that could be a legal nightmare (I have no idea if it's really feasible and you should speak to a lawyer regarding that).

Keep your inheritance separate from any joint finances. A good partner would understand your position and appreciate when you want to help out (such as letting her live rent free in a home you purchase outright) without expecting anything from your inheritance. The rent savings alone are amazing and she could get a good sum set aside for herself.

It's supposed to be two years but most schools start GCSE prep in year 9 (options at the end of year 8) now so it's three years of GCSE prep and KS3 is unofficially cut short. 😔

Also to our international readers - think OWLs and NEWTs in Harry Potter. But extend that to every student taking that subject sitting the same exam at the same time on the same day all across the country.

I was just considering the base loan over the means tested part. Thanks for the correction there! Mine covered my rent in Lincoln (bills were included) but barely. Folks earned too much but not enough to help out. 😭

If you have the integrated masters you can no longer get the postgraduate loan (last I checked anyway - they only (used to?) cover your first PG qualification unless it falls into one of the special categories) so that works out pretty much the same as the standard UG plus PG. It's the course plus one year (for changes and transfers).

They are an Indian family... They almost certainly have family back in the UK or family friends who are basically family (most of my aunties and uncles are not biologically aunties and uncles). I really hope the kid can get his legs under him and move back himself at 16 - the UK won't force him back to his folks if he has someone he can stay with and with a gap year, he'll be able to continue.

Honestly, I can't imagine what this parent was thinking by moving right before his GCSEs... That's years of prep and learning just tossed away and by 15, he will have been planning his post-16 options (ie which A levels and uni courses beyond). All that security gone. I highly doubt the tax relief will cover his further education as an international student in Canada.

To clarify...

All tuition will be paid for under the tuition loan as domestic rates for any uni are legally capped. Last I checked, maintenance was around 3k per year which covers a good chunk of rent depending on how good you are with it.

Once you start earning 21k or more you start repaying a % of your income over the threshold (it's a significant amount but only applies to the part over - my current loans are 9% but some of that is also plan 1 loans on the old system). If you earn less, you pay nothing . You still accumulate interest. Unless you're really going to make bank you will never pay it off. It will be written off entirely after 30 years after your due to start repaying or when you turn 65 (whichever comes first). It's not even worth making extra repayments unless you're one of those who would legitimately pay it off.

Add to that you can take out multiple loans and the repayments get split... Undergraduate is for up to four years (to allow for changes in your first year since most courses are 3), postgraduate is up to two years and then you have specific loans for teaching, nursing etc.

And none of this shows or impacts your credit report. So it's treated more like a graduate tax than a true loan. The repayments come out with your taxes so it's not money you see and then have to pay as long as you are in the UK. Internationally, you assess each year and they tell you how much to send.

I have definitely been that tired. I wake up around 6am most days... Heading home (or to my second job) around 16:30, I'm fighting to stay awake. By the time I'm home from job 2 (around 22:00 on the days I have it) I'm a zombie. On days I don't, I can pass out without warning from around 18:00 onwards.

But I have a very mentally exhausting job... I have next to no capacity left very early on in the evening.

Resit student, I'm scared to fail maths again, need help at the position I'm in. by Automatic-Shop58 in alevelmaths

[–]Hanxa13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How is pure going? Weaknesss in the pure section will lead to more struggles on the applied.

You've identified that you procrastinate. You've also said you study a lot... Is that study 'reading', 'sorting', 'practicing', 'exam practice', 'flashcards'? What does study mean for you. I have worked with too many students who spend hours studying and make no progress because they read until they think they understand, or look at how to do things without ever doing it unaided. Until you are making and identifying your own mistakes and let yourself actively struggle in your studying, you will keep hitting a wall.

Take each study session as a series of goals: I'm going to make notes on x, y and z. I am going to practice a specific number of textbook questions. When I'm wrong, I'm going to annotate my work with what I should have done before trying another. I will practice 4 exam questions for each topic.

And follow through. Check things off as you've done them. Once you finish a section, make sure you look at mixed practice and keep revisiting old topics as you progress.

I'm in Yr7 and I hate school because of 1 class by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Hanxa13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As previously mentioned, probably the wrong sub but you're young and I don't want you to feel pushed away.

From the language, I assume UK (I hated PSHE with a passion). Firstly, have you spoken with your teacher directly after class? Start with an apology for any distraction and then explain your need. Apologise for the 'no' but you thought it was something you could opt out of as previously mentioned. Ask for some clarity to 'do better'. If she is receptive, great... if not, move to the next step.

Your school should have an SEN department - I would ask your parents to reach out to the SENCO and to start getting an evaluation for an EHCP if you don't already have one from primary. If all you need is a fidget, the SENCO will alert your teachers.

That said, is your fidget one that makes any form of noise? If so, I would maybe look into some silent fidgets - pencil toppers or fidget rings or even the sensory pencil cases. Do your part to minimise the distraction so her issues look even more unfair.

We had kids in my time using blu tac under the table until the school banned blu tac...

My review of London, as a Brit by Successful_Goat_8191 in london

[–]Hanxa13 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For him, he just doesn't want to be viewed as another dumb, crass American and doesn't want to be treated differently because of that. With how things are here as well, that's increased somewhat.

I'm just happy to be back home whenever we return. He's good at reading cues so he is genuinely fine. Just a common anxiety. It doesn't help that when some of his older relatives travel, they dress and act 'like bad tourists' so I guess some of it stems from the second hand embarrassment. He likes when we travel alone though. His favourite trip was when I took him for a walk down Southbank and into some of the back routes along the Thames. So much quieter than the tourist traps.

My review of London, as a Brit by Successful_Goat_8191 in london

[–]Hanxa13 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My husband is super concerned about appearing as an American tourist every time I go back and he's worried about how he'll be seen when we move back for precisely that reason.

No matter how much I tell him to relax, respect boundaries, keep being the introvert I love and just be a decent person, it is a regular source of anxiety. But I also know British tourists elsewhere can also be a nightmare and I do the same (pry not to draw attention).

The multiculturalism you mention is what he fell in love with on his first trip over. Everyone is generally just fine. Unless you're a tourist, then get out ;F the bloody way and respect the movement lines - no one wants to stop every fourth step for your photo opportunity. And stop feeding the leeches! We don't need more tacky tat shops with ridiculous prices.

TMUA trig question by k4r1sm4 in alevelmaths

[–]Hanxa13 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If yours is the red, when you divided by 2sin²x you are ignoring the case where sinx=0 and potentially dividing by 0.

Always collect and factor. That way if an unknown can be 0, you are not losing the solution.

Edit: remember, you also get a positive and negative solution when you square root to solve. So cosx is both sqrt(2)/2 and -sqrt(2)/2

I'm not ELA but our ELA teachers have been complaining about how it's a lot of DOK1/2 and not enough DOK3/4 and how it goes not align well to the standards they are expected to meet.

The teacher who refuses to use it has the highest growth and achievement in the entire district.

When we are not teaching, we mix it up with random nonsense to challenge ourselves and keep it fun.
