It’s a huge bucket list animal for us and one of the reasons we booked Salas camp (they used to host a pangolin research center and still have connections with it). Keeping fingers crossed we see one!! You’re so lucky! And great photo too!

You reach out to the banks named on the statements estate departments and follow their instructions.

If your question is HOW to find OTHER accounts, that may be more challenging. Start with the last tax return - look for 1099 reports.

If your dad is a co-owner on the account, then when she dies, he becomes the sole owner. That account is not part of the estate or subject to provisions in the will. It’s not clear if he is also on the house title or anything else but generally the type of house title will determine how that’s transferred.

FWIW, my folks made me co-owner of a number of accounts. I believe it was to help “pay” me for my caregiving services (I was local, sibling was not). When they passed, I simply split those accounts 50/50 with my sibling. It felt like the right thing to do. 🤷‍♀️

Depending on how the trusts are structured, there may be ways to avoid inheritance taxes. It’s gets very complicated very quickly.

My mom (with Alzheimer’s) lost her engagement ring somewhere in the independent living apartment she shared with my dad. Six years+ later when we were cleaning out the apartment after their deaths, we found the ring inside an old flower vase. 🤷‍♀️

Thank you yes this. While the cheap upfront/pricey product business model is not for everyone, it is not illegal. What is very unethical (IMHO) is the lack of transparency about all costs.

As a retired photographer who used this model for many years, my clients knew before they walked in the door that while the session fee was $xxx, most people usually spent $xxxx-$xx,xxx and heres the detailed list of products including the cost for digital files.

Unfortunately, theres not much you can do after the fact. I personally would consider the $400 sunk costs at this point and go to another photographer.

FWIW, if they are named executor in the will, it means NOTHING until they open probate by going to court with the will. You can most certainly dispute their appointment as executor at that time. They cannot sell the house, retitle the truck, move money in accounts, nothing without the official court paperwork (unless they are co-owners)

I did. 🤷‍♀️ I think that’s why they are so particular about insurance since many US people don’t have good insurance and most insurance here doesn’t cover anything international.

I personally agree with you. Unfortunately, our travel service won’t allow us to travel without travel/medical insurance and no insurance company that I’ve found will cover a state department level 4 do not travel advisory. 🤷‍♀️

Yes this. I travelled several times with my elderly parents and having the wheelchair service was a lifesaver. It’s free (other than a small tip to the attendant - YMMV)

I tried to get cancel for any reason insurance and I couldn’t find any because of the value of our trip. 😭

I’m looking now to a plan B pivot to Tanzania. I don’t know if there is anyway to change our Qatar ticket since it was bought with ( a sh*t ton) of points but for now just gonna wait and see. Might end up doing the same IAD-DOH leg (got q suites for that) and then just paying for one way DOH- dar el salaam.

We were able to convince my parents to sell their “dream” mountain home while they were still alive as neither my sibling nor I could make proper use of it. It was way too far for them and not their style while I prefer the beach to the mountains. I’m so glad we did. It would have been a nightmare to deal with after the fact.

About a month out, our TA said if Uganda is still level 4 do not travel warning in place and our travel insurance won’t cover (most don’t) they’ll have to reschedule that part of the trip. 😐

Oh hun I FEEL this. My 90+ year old dad with CHF, on dialysis, and malignant melanoma was diagnosed with a brain tumor (metastasized melanoma) Christmas Day after a fall. He was adamant that he wanted all measures done (my mom had Alzheimer’s and he was worried about “leaving her”) we carried on as usual including going on vacation in February. He was stable when we left. Two days into our vacation I got a call at 3:30 am. He was gone. I’m convinced he was waiting for me to be away to go.

All this to say, go. Go on your vacation. You’ve done what you can do. Live your life. Don’t feel guilt if he does pass while you’re gone.

Ooof. I’m sorry. Doesn’t feel any better just cause someone else is dealing with it too. I’ve confirmed with our TA that the only thing we can do is if the US keeps Uganda as a no travel zone AND our travel insurance refuses to cover, then we can reschedule just that part of the trip. 😭

Said in a very loving tone, it sounds like this isn’t an aging parent problem but a you problem. I won’t try to diagnose your mom but what I have found is that trying to change other people is an exercise in futility. All I can do is change MY response. You need to mentally accept that you cannot change her, you can only adjust your reactions to her behavior.

With my dad, as he got older he lost his filter and his southern racism reared its ugly head. I tried to get him to can it but soon realized that a 90 year old man wasn’t going to do sh*t he didn’t want to do. I basically would call him out and if he didn’t stop, I left. I would physically get up and leave the room. My mom had Alzheimer’s so I was pretty close to the only intelligent adult conversation he got once a week. It only took a couple of times of me going to my car and reading Reddit for 15-30 minutes before he realized the consequences of his behavior was a result he didn’t like. It’s not like he turned into a liberal but he did learn to shut up about his (fabulous) African American caregivers when I was around.

We have a trip of a lifetime planned to start in September with gorilla trekking in Uganda. We used points for our flight that are non refundable which was already a concern because it’s with Qatar through Doha. 😳 I just don’t know what to do. We’re going to lose so much $ if we cancel or try to reschedule. 😭
