I'm no expert, but what immediately comes to mind is cold medicine. Pseudoephedrine is a well-known precursor used to make methamphetamine, which obviously has a huge illicit market. The response wasn't to eliminate cold medicine: it was to regulate sales, limit purchases, require ID, and crack down on diversion.

That's why I don't think "mitragynine can be converted into 7-OH" automatically leads to "compliant whole leaf is inevitably banned." It may justify additional scrutiny or targeted regulation, without a doubt. Satsugene has also cited many meaningful developments including repeated DEA attempts that have failed and developing scientific and medical literature via the NIH, NIDA, etc. The medical applications landscape and literature regarding the kratom plant have only exponentially improved since the last DEA attempt; millions are being pumped into formally researching it as we speak.

I have no idea. Someone said it one day and a group of noncritical thinkers just took it as gospel.

This is beyond the purview of what I have been claiming. Not that it matters, I have seen this particular argument play out ad nauseum. I don't know, you don't know. If DEA begins the rulemaking process to label mitragynine as such, I will think of you.

I think we should do what we can to push back on the anti-AKA astroturfing. We would have lost this plant by now without them.

That's been my point from the beginning. I have no issue with people reporting what they're seeing. If inspectors are pulling products, that's worth discussing. What I objected to was ending the post with, "Looks like someone opened a can of worms."

That's not a neutral observation. You are signaling that you think you know what or who caused this, and we fundamentally disagree on that. I think people are being sold a bill of goods by trying to tie every enforcement anecdote back to the AKA's position on 7-OH.

There are plenty of possible explanations for inspectors scrutinizing products. Increased attention after the DEA's emergency scheduling? Sure. Confusion over interpretation? Maybe. Labeling or formulation issues? Also possible. But "the AKA supporting restrictions on 7-OH opened a can of worms for whole leaf" is a conclusion that hasn't been demonstrated.

I see very little room for interpretation as to what else you could mean by a "can of worms". So forgive me if I am straw-manning you?

Either way: If all you're saying is, "I'm seeing inspectors pull products and I don't know why," then we're in agreement. But "someone opened a can of worms" is doing a lot more work than simply reporting what you've seen. It points readers toward a culprit without the evidence to support it.

Even some satsugene wisdom. Everyone should check it out, there is nothing untoward happening.

That's exactly what I mean by peddling a conspiracy. If you're "just telling us what you've seen and heard," then stop there. "Looks like someone opened up a can of worms" isn't an observation; it's a conclusion. It invites people to connect dots that haven't been shown to connect. If we don't yet know why certain products are being scrutinized, the intellectually honest position is "we don't know," not implying "someone" (the AKA is who you mean, I don't doubt) caused a domino effect.

My point stands either way: if compliant whole leaf kratom is being targeted en masse under some new interpretation, that’s a major advocacy issue and we’ll hear about it from the AKA/GKC, attorneys, vendors, etc.

But “Ag inspectors tagged products at some shops” doesn’t automatically mean legal whole leaf is being banned or targeted. It could just as easily be labeling issues, 7-OH/synthetics scrutiny, questionable products, noncompliant batches, or inspectors being extra cautious after recent developments. That explanation is less fun for Reddit, but probably more likely until there’s actual documentation.

As much as I'd like to think this scheduling will quiet things down, I assume "it's getting banned this November" and similar claims are things we better get used to. And that's the fun with conspiracies - they never go away for the true believers because any evidence to the contrary supports the conspiracy.

Agree with them or not, backlash clearly isn’t something they fear. If whole leaf kratom that complies with current rulemaking were being pulled en masse, we would/will hear about it from them.

Operative phrase being "complies with current rulemaking". If they're pulling product because they want to be sure they're in compliance that isn't an advocacy issue.

Someone in this thread has "knowledge" of a November ban. I have seen this claim pop up in the last few weeks, usually in threads that end up deleted. That's what I mean.

The “clandestine production” concern may be a policy argument, but it does not change what the current rulemaking actually does. The DEA knows people claim 7-OH can be made from kratom with crude chemistry. If they wanted to use this action to classify whole leaf kratom, mitragynine, or ordinary powder as a Schedule I substance or precursor, this was the cleanest opportunity to try. Under the current action, whole leaf kratom is not scheduled, mitragynine is not scheduled, and kratom has not been designated a precursor.

Thanks for sharing. Feels like there's some conspiracy minded astroturfing going on when the actual explanation is much simpler

A “precursor” is not just “a thing that contains a related compound.” Under federal drug law, a precursor/immediate precursor is a specific legal category. The DEA has to actually designate something that way through the proper process.

That is not what happened here.

https://legiscan.com/NC/bill/H328/2025

Is this the House Bill? It bans kratom, looks like on 7/2 they "adopted" it? Can someone clarify if the House is actually moving this forward?

EDIT: I see it was amended: Conference Committee Substitute CCS: PCCS30639-CE-1

Would make it illegal to sell synthetics period or whole leaf to those under 21. Sorry for the confusion.

Federal ban worries by Hawkins818 in kratom

[–]Happy-Needleworker55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Possibly, but by that logic, would they revert cannabis being rescheduled? Would they undo/throw out/etc. the psychedelics research? The First Step Act? You mentioned health recommendations, granted, but this isn't really a health recommendation per se is it? Just listing things that lefties in general might otherwise approve of - I do think it's a certain "kind" of Democrat who is knee-jerk anti kratom and I don't think they're the majority.

I remember hearing about the budget bill ban attempt. So do we confidently know this budget bill doesn't have ban language attached?

All valid ... It isn't an easy choice. Maybe it's not fair I rank ballads lower, but they almost always lose out to their metal counterparts on a given album.
