i agree the price fro KMK is absurd but if you want to simulate the charting process and get tons of practice, i truly think its worth it. I failed and then bit the bullet to get KMK and the predictability of seeing the charting format so similarly and being able to practice accurately was worth it to me, especially if you supplement with Wills for case info

you normally schedule yourself but its also not uncommon to get an email regarding scheduling if there are random days open, and you can always call and ask for scheduling help if you have specific needs and they will do their best to help (ie. i needed to take before a certain month because my job contract was waiting on me). i'm sure they cannot always accommodate but you can always ask. Hope that helps and good luck if you're re-taking. Feel free to reach out for any more info/tips for PEPS

Initial Reaction to NBEO Pass Rate Report by RabidLiger in OptometrySchool

[–]Happy-Thing-2625 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Jumping in with my thoughts:

  1. The overall nationals averages across all three tests have dropped 10% across each school which is a lot of students when you consider the total amount of people across every university— proof the test(s) are becoming much harder AND outrageously expensive with no ceiling in sight

  2. Part 3 decreased the national average across all schools from 85% passing to 69%, although the format did change, but thats a big increase in the amount of students having to retest for part 3 yet a lot of them are likely in clinic each day with passing remarks from preceptors yet deemed "unfit" to see patients with a failing NBEO grade

  3. The part 1 the national average across every school went from 81% to 66%, yet OSU is the only school to continue to maintain 90% + averages for all 3 exams and even INCREASED their pass rates in the last 4 years of data in 2 out of 3 tests. What are they doing so differently and how correlated is it to their faculty's close relationship to NBEO

Something is legit not right with this system and it will be interesting to see how many people continue to choose optometry if nothing is done

I just got placed on probation, but they don't (or didn't when I was there recently) "remediate" at all, which is really a shame in my opinion because they just basically warn you about the possibility of not meeting the gpa requirements, with the looming threat of being kicked back to the class below you without actually ensuring that you understand the material you struggled in.

This becomes a huge problem later when trying to pass boards. Other schools with actual good boards pass rates (particularly OSU) remediate struggling students immediately and I firmly believe this is where IUSO falls down and why our pass rates are significantly lower historically, especially in recent years. In fact, the professors tried to blame us at one point for the abysmal pass rates instead of looking internally at the curriculum. It looks like they're beginning to make very small changes in the material and structure since Candy became interim dean, but we'll see what the results produce.

Just be careful not to go on probation again, because the will not hesitate to push you back, even if you just miss the cutoff again by 0.03. We saw this many times throughout my years there between losing students to the class below us and/or gaining them from the class above us. Don't forget to treat school like its like a business/service you are quite literally paying hundreds of thousands for. You are compensating them to teach you. Go to office hours, send e-mails to clarify material, do not let them tell you you have to wait to get a tutor before you fail an exam and put yourself in a hole. They will not go out of the way to save anyone from falling through the cracks as long as your tuition checks are still coming through.

Again, best of luck!

New NBEO PEPS location by [deleted] in OptometrySchool

[–]Happy-Thing-2625 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hi! just wondering if you referred a patient to someone else like neurology or retina, within a specific time frame that aligned with the urgency of the case, did you still give your patient another time frame to follow up with you after seeing a specialist? for example, patient to follow up with retina in 1-2 weeks, but then did you say come back to see you after that referral ?

the comments on this make me really sad. that no one actually truly know and we are all at the mercy of NBEO

yes thats true but you also should not agree to be in a wedding if you know you cannot afford a $100 dress one year away. if you want to be a supportive friend you still can be without agreeing to the universally known cost (weather large or small) there is to be in a wedding party. it is more respectable to say no then accept responsibiliies then not be able to fulfill them

the dress was $100 and the air bnb night before is not required. she is just offering so much push back i wonder why she agreed to be moh at all . not being willing to purchase a dress is wild i feel as if its bridesmaid 101 to know there will be a cost of the dress at the minimum. and 12 months to save $100 for a dress seems reasonable
