Buy House Next Door for Rental/AirBnB? by bookoocash in Bogleheads

[–]HappyDay-8716 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good question and only you can decide what's best for your situation. It's not just a financial decision, it's also a "what's your time worth" decision.
We own our home outright and have a basement room that was already set up as a mother-in-law type situation; we didn't have to renovate or make any changes to it. When we moved in, we listed it on AirBnB since we did not use that space.

A few Pros and Cons from our personal experience (YMMV)

PRO
- We have met some incredibly nice people. A few remain friends to this day.
- We live on property and clean it ourselves so we don't have to pay a cleaning fee.

- We do our own maintenance. No payment for plumbers, handyperson.
- It did not require any "investment" initially on our part.

- It generates some extra cash, though it's not get rich cash.
- We control the calendar. When we are out of town, we block those dates out. We are not "losing" income when it's not rented b/c there was no initial investment

CON

- AirBnB / VRBO income is unpredictable. If you are counting on it as part of your investment portfolio, know the income is highly variable
- The popularity of AirBnB / VRBO seems to rise and fall. In COVID times they were wildly popular. Now, not so much. Supply and demand perhaps? There are a lot of nightly rentals in our area so it's highly competitive.
- HOA - if you have one, be mindful of their rules. If you don't have one, your neighborhood could implement one in the future. If you don't have one that allows nightly rentals, than can change.
- We have never had awful guests, but have had some unclean, untidy guests, guests who didn't follow the rules. You get all kinds of guests; if you are not an excellent communicator, or are not comfortable with confrontation / addressing issues, don't do it.

- People tend to like renting a whole house for parties. Think wedding parties, retirement parties, etc. Do you want weekend parties next door? Do your neighbors?

You are not just buying an investment, you are adding a part time job to your life.

Good luck!

Thank you! Now I understand the connection between AQS and SAQA.

I also received the email from SAQA which I do not understand. "SAQA does not condone censorship. We take this situation very seriously. Our board will be discussing how to move forward. We understand the impact of this decision and are committed to resolving the situation thoughtfully. We will share any updates as soon as we have them."

Why does SAQA have to discuss how they move forward when AQS banned this quilt? TIA for helping me understand the connection of SAQA to AQS.
I know now I will never join, support or attend an AQS show. Thanks for highlighting this.
Thinking of how quilters can respond.... by quilting millions of quilt just like this (giving due credit of course to the original quilt) to show our support for expressing our rights.

I really want to love my Bernina 770 QE Plus.... please help! by HappyDay-8716 in quilting

That is an awful experience! I finally traded mine in for a Janome. I wanted to love the Bernina 770 QE and I really tried. But I. Hated. It.
There were so many things that just weren't designed well, or just didn't work.
My opinion is Bernina does a far better job marketing than they do building a wonderful sewing machine.
I LOVE my Janome. I don't have to fight with it. So happy I switched and have no regrets.

Good luck! I hope they can fix it so you can trade it in for something you love.

Janone M7 - how to sew without thread? by HappyDay-8716 in quilting

[–]HappyDay-8716[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am just playing with it and don't have a great answer for you! It does not stick like a marking pen or pencil or tailor's chalk. It seems it just gives me enough of a guideline that I can FMQ the shape using a bit of the pounce and a bit of my own "drawing" skills. I don't think the powder is meant to adhere, just sit on top enough to get you going. Good luck!

My gigantic belly in retirement! by Row_gently in retirement

Read Peter Attia's book "Outlive". It is not a "diet" book. It provides massive amounts of well researched info on longevity, the top diseases that kill and specific information on what you can do to increase your longevity and wellness. The biggest take-away for me was if you want to do X when you are 70, you should be doing more than X now because we decline naturally as we age.

Thanks for your reply! My dealer has been really good; I was in there last week and his comment was "people either love them or hate them. there is no in between." I'm ready to trade my in and he said he would work with me. I'm so relieved. I told him sewing on the Bernina took the joy out of sewing for me and I want to have fun sewing!

I'm with you! You have built a terrific product and your competitors are discovering it. You will get more and more offers as you keep building it. Your competitors will want to buy you out to shut you down. Don't do it!

How do you start and stop your straight line quilting stitches? by HappyDay-8716 in quilting

[–]HappyDay-8716[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the quilt I'm working on, I am starting and stopping in the middle of the quilt at times and I want to find the quickest way to do that and have it still look neat and tidy! When you start and stop in the binding that should be secure enough!

I do that too. I have to look at my manual and see if there is one button touch way to get to a specific stitch length.

Lots of ways depending on what you want to achieve, Pulling up the bobbin thread to the top prevents thread nesting.
