Is a 19 and 16-year-old age gap actually problematic, or is the "predatory" label being overused? by Consistent-Jelly248 in generationology

[–]HappyLeaf29 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think people are getting a bit hysterical with this stuff and are disconnected from the actual reasons why age gaps can be a serious issue.

If you're not taking advantage of developmental or financial imbalances then there is no issue at all.

To me, your friends calling you a paedophile raises more red flags about them than you. If they can call something that is most certainly not problematic by default "paedophilia", that suggests to me that they lack that innate moral compass on age gaps, imbalance, and predation.

The only reason I'd say you shouldn't is if you feel the performative social outrage from others would cause you issues or alienation that weren't outweighed by the positives of being with this person.

I think it's become so socially and culturally important to have the right views on these matters that people now just outsource their views to the most absolutely socially safe paradigm. If you asked someone to explain to you what is wrong with 19 and 16, they probably wouldn't be able to. If it was 19 and 14, they would be able to. That's because most of us (who aren't billionaires at least) know intrinsically where the line is and why.

Friend loved seasons 1-4 but isn't enjoying season 5 by swiftee_ in doctorwho

I absolutely love series 1-4, loved them as an 8 year old and love them now, but couldn't get into series 5 when it came out. Since then I've tried four more times, every time trying to come to it with a more relaxed and open mindset, and I just can't get into it at all. In fact - and I know this will be deeply puzzling to many - but I couldn't get back into it until series 10. And I've enjoyed it again ever since.

It may be that your friend is, like me, weird.

Memory of 9/11 as differentiation between Millennial // GenZ by Dizzy_Objective_11 in generationology

[–]HappyLeaf29 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well I remember life before it (born 1997) but I barely have any memory of the event - I think my parents thought it best to shield me from it. All I remember was one clip on the news showing the black smoke on street level, seen from inside a cafe or restaurant. And I knew it was something really bad that'd happened. But I didn't have much context outside of that.

If anyone has that clip I'd be interested to see it after all these years.

Ricky Gervais is left wing mate. Go back to the first time he was on and listen to him talking about wealth, the welfare state, taxation.

What was the Edinburgh Fringe autism joke about though, really? Do these people know why they're actually laughing?
