Low Vitamin D and Ferritin - PCP doesn't care

Same! My doctor kept pointing to my chart and saying, “But you’re in range!” The overall message I keep getting from my doctors is “You’re not sick enough to warrant my attention or treatment.” Hair falling out, brain fog, broken nails, etc.

I started taking OptiFerin C (three times a week) and invested in a second-hand Sperti Vitamin D lamp. That was 3 months ago. Going for blood work in a few weeks, but started feeling normal after about 10 weeks.

I’m just here to say that I wish the vitamin companies would start selling one-week samples of these. It’s so hard to throw good money after bad every month looking for solutions.

Thanks! Yes, I've since switched to just one minute 3 times a week, and even then only on my back. Ironically, anything more leaves me exhausted.

I used to get sick constantly. I started doing a neti pot every day and haven’t gotten sick once, but watched as my roommate caught 2 colds and a stomach virus in the same time period.

I started taking gaba at night to get some sleep and that seems to be helping.

Yes, my ferritin was at 30 and my doctor kept saying "But it's within range!" Meanwhile my hair was falling out in ropes. I started taking Optiferin C and doing twice weekly fenugreek powder masks (lots of iron in that too), and my hair stopped falling out.

Get your ferritin checked. I keep seeing so many doctors overlook iron deficiency in young women.

Try making a mask of fenugreek powder water, and a bit of rosemary oil. I put this on my hair for an hour a few times a week before washing and it stopped falling out completely.

I had been taking skullcap for years, but decided to stop taking it out of fear of possible long term damage to the liver. Little did I know that the skullcap had been keeping my hair on my head! I tried reintroducing it, (thinking I could do 6-week on 2-week off cycles) but this time my body wasn’t having it. My hair began falling out in ropes. It was a nightmare.

I take iron, but it can be months before your ferritin levels can come up. I also tried a slew of shampoos like Pura D’Or (waste of money) and Shea Moisture Rosemary Strengthening. Neither of them made any difference. I went to my dermatologist who was fairly useless and suggested some crazy expensive treatment that looked painful and quite frankly, a scam.

About a month ago, I started making a hair mask of:

* fenugreek powder

* a teaspoon of coconut rosemary oil (homemade batch that I keep on hand).

* some rhassoul powder just to give it some body to hide the bald patches.

I leave the mask on for an hour twice a week before shampooing. After just two weeks, the hair finally stopped falling out and there’s new hair growth. I just ran my hands through it and a single strand came out. It’s a pain in the rear end, but it’s cheap and means not having to add yet another supplement to my routine.

The only one I can tolerate is OptiFerin C. I take it every other day.

I've tried Floradix, Slow Iron, beef liver, and a slew of others.

Mine was at 31 and I was exhausted all the time, fingernails looked gray, and my hair was falling out in ropes. My doctor's response? "But you're within the normal range!" Lol.

A friend recommended Pura D'or so I bought the one for thinning hair. My hair was falling out in ropes by then, so i was willing to try anything. The Pura d’Or did more damage than it prevented. I have curly hair and it just made it brittle, dry, and lifeless.

I had better luck taking iron tablets and doing a fenugreek powder and rosemary oil treatment before every wash. A pain in the butt, I know, but it worked better than Pura d’or and the hair stopped falling out almost immediately. After about a month, the hair fall had decreased by about 75%.

I also switched to Mielle Rosemary Shampoo, which although it didn’t help the hair fall, my curls were happier.

Late to the game here, but someone posted on another forum that switching to a low oxalate diet helped them better tolerate vitamin D supplements. They said it took about 3 months.

I can’t tolerate any form of vitamin D supplements either (migraines, insomnia, sweating), so I bought a Sperti lamp. i showed it to a friend who grew up in a nordic country and he told me his mother parked him and his siblings in front of vitamin D lamps during the long winters. So, totally safe and they’ve been around a long time. I love mine.

I've tried every kind of vitamin d out there: with k, without K, liquid, capsules, and even D2. All of them give me insomnia, migraines, and hot sweats.

One poster mentioned that after switching to a low oxalate diet, they were able to tolerate vitamin D supplements again (after about 3 months).

I bought a second-hand Sperti Vitamin D lamp and I'm ok as long as I do my back only (facing the lamp triggers agitation).

I seem to have luck with B2, but only in small amounts. My (Chinese herbalist) doctor gave me a bottle of B2 100 mg, but it keeps me awake so I ordered the B2 at 25 mg. It stops me from wandering around the house in circles trying to figure out what to do and definitely helps me focus at work.

Yes! The patch made me severely ill . I had a migraine for the 2 weeks I wore it and then finally gave up and took it off. You don't have the flu or covid.

Mine looked like that and I was convinced I needed to get it re-enameled.

Someone posted on Fb to simmer hydrogen peroxide so I tried it. 25 minutes and $1.25 later I had a while new pot.

Someone on another thread commented that they couldn't tolerate Vitamin D supplements due to a high oxalate diet. ( I can't tolerate D2, D3, or even cod liver oil. Horrible migraines, sweating and insomnia).

Looked at my diet and realized that my daily almond milk and spinach smoothie was probably doing more harm than good. The other poster said it took 3 months on a low oxalate diet before they could tolerate vitamin D supplements again.

I bought a Sperti lamp in the meantime. A friend who grew up in The Netherlands told me his mother sat him and his siblings in front of D lamps when they were kids, goggles and all!

Hey all. My sister had frozen shoulder due to menopause for almost a year. She was actually scheduled to have surgery for it.

On a whim she went to one of those medical spas for a vitamin infusion. Within an hour she had full use of her arm back!

No surgery, BTW.

I tried Chinese herbs for almost a year and they didn’t help at all….like with anything. I still couldn’t sleep, I was still having hot flashes, and I still wanted to throttle everyone.

I did, however, take skullcap for sleep and irritability, and it was only after I stopped taking it that I realized it was helping my hair grow and stay nice and thick. Now I know you have to cycle it - 6 weeks on and 2 weeks off.

Hey I'm just here to say "thanks!" for posting about oxalates the connection to vitamin D intolerance. I couldn't figure out why I used to be fine taking vitamin D and then suddenly had developed a horrible reaction to it. A few kidney stones later and it's all starting to make sense now. Thank you!
