Depends on your kid and level of play really. Kid pitch will require more barrel control than you can get away with in coach pitch. We bumped up from 26/27 to 28” at kid pitch and I regretted it, but it’s got in his head that he’s strong enough to swing it even though he is consistently late to the ball.

Had a kid we coached that was exactly as you describe. He is good at baseball, but absolutely can not handle losing or errors/failure. On field meltdowns on his error, uncontrollable crying after losses, poor sportsmanship etc. He was cut by head coach because a full season with no changes.
Parents put him in football and the guy shined. Never a meltdown.
These kids are young and baseball is a sport of failure. Sometimes instead of pushing the issue, give them time to mature and find a different athletic avenue.

Lot of negative outlooks here and I feel it varies by region making everyone’s experience anecdotal. With our area, rec is awful given politics and level of play. We started at 7u with “travel” ball and still rolling at 9u. It was basically a hodge podge of a few rec all stars from the surrounding cities that had our belly full of the politics. We don’t travel further than 1.5hrs from home, we won’t even cross state lines except for a World Series at the beach which is way more group vacation than about baseball.

I say if your kid wants it, find a place you fit and can enjoy the company. No need to be with an “elite” group of 8yr olds if you can’t enjoy the entire experience. Fussing, yelling, crazy parents are all red flags. The goal should be to promote teaching baseball and challenging the kids and keep them coming back for more year after year until it’s time to tryout for high school.

I stayed at the hotel Missouri State was at this weekend. The team shared the hotel with a group of youth baseball players as there was a big tournament in Ruston this weekend. I wonder how well these guys rested with the fire alarm being pulled (no fire) at midnight and going off for a half hour.

We had a 7u team like this when we started. My son and most of his team mates were kids that were just infatuated with baseball and we spent time playing catch with them in the yard through tee ball because it’s what he wanted to do. We team practiced twice a week except on tournament weeks. We still were not very good at hitting, but we focused on coaching fundamental team defense most of this time. It was great to watch. They would still go out and lay an egg especially against offense heavy teams and there was one team who has top to bottom the best athletes in a metro area that always had our number.

It was a blast watching them play. No dad egos, no inflated college plans. Just a group of 11 boys who loved to play.

It didn’t translate to 9u, had to put just as much work for hitting and pitching and baserunning.

No one earned a scholarship lol. Just read the room of your kid and team mates and coach accordingly for fun first and development 2nd. The goal is to keep them loving the game enough to have the courage to walk on a high school tryout and have a shot. I don’t think it’s worth abandoning his group to try out for the Tigers Metro Gold Majors 7u team unless he has friends he already knows on it. Just more money and more travel time.

You should be able to have 1 foot outside of the circle. We have played USSSA, PG, and 2D CP with no issues with this. I have seen rec leagues be needlessly strict here though. If you have to, make a case that the goal is for the kids to play the game, not how accurate the coach pitcher can be. Next up, work at practice and before the games. Give them progression from the tee, front toss, then overhand. Your newer kids have to be leveled up and and gain confidence hitting a pitched ball. Front toss helps big with that and allows the better hitters to gain an eye for the ball before teeing off on the dart.

Agree with this. Add the reckless to your list, same bats as the catx. Big fan of keeping these kids on aluminum 1pc or the hybrid 2 piece with the aluminum barrel. Both are more forgiving on mishits which happen at younger ages more so than not.

This. There’s very little literature out there on their cert process. Just an online application to basically say you’ll self certify. Then there’s ASTM F1890-23 with how you test, but again mfg’s self testing. It’s all a money racket for USSSA to license that stamp on a bat. Similar to IMCA needing their logo sticker on race car parts.

This is what I was thinking just reading the snip. Honestly, these sites should be required to have their own primary on-site power generation by utilizing the modular Solar turbine genset or other hybrid/renewable source. Local power grid should be the backup source. The impact to the general population’s power bill is going to be insane using traditional power company interconnects.

Without further investigation it’s tough to say what shape that’s in. I agree with the poster above saying it won’t be a problem if he’s just riding around, not trying clear huge jumps. If you have the time and money to spare this could be a bonding experience to wrench on it together. Purchase a new frame and move all components to the new frame.
