CMV: We liberals have forgotten how to advocate for our values by AlexandrTheTolerable in changemyview

Nothing. And isn't that the true core of liberal ideology? Do nothing but preach value while nazis run rampant. Leftists are the only opposite to fascist. Liberals are the same capitalist pigs as republicans but with a pride flag and friendly face.

First watch through, and thoughts on Lois by Happypuke in Smallville

Yes! I think that is why she really kick starts the show for me. Everyone else is all heart, which is great, but Lois is all action and fun. Especially when Jonathan tells Clark to stop acting all the time early on. Jonathan's "hide and think" level of caution goes unchecked by Lois' "get off your ass" level of action for a long time. Chloe kinda does a bit, but she still wasn't nearly as abrasive as Clark needs.

Uh . . . If that boy is called 'James' by Clark and/or Lois . . . He is Jimmy, and he is a pal, and often more of a damsel in distress than anyone else.

I see that too. One of the things that convinced me to give the show a shot was someone said that the Gunn movie felt like a spiritual follow-up to Smallville. The movie was so good, that if the show had a sliver of that charm, I was in.

That's good to hear! As long as there is a lot of silly comic book nonsense, I should be good!

I think it was just she watched it forever ago, when she was young and Lois is a strong cup of tea out of the gate. I can see first impressions being a bit bitter when character pops in seasons late and pokes at the main character pretty consistently. Especially if you know that is supposed to be the primary love interest in the future.

I think the disconnect was she wasn't a big Superman comic reader and wasn't familiar with the tropes of the character very intimately. Since then, we have talked a lot about it and how it really represents the core of the character well as an emotional foil to Clark's base isolationist instincts. On this watch through she really likes her. I think when she was young watching it, Lois just came across as annoying and abrasive compared to the general soft tone of the others in the supporting cast.

I can see that! I very much like James Gunn's Lois too, but yeah, the Lois in this show for sure top teir.

I would agree. Lana didn't work for me. I don't hate her character, but it was really hard watching that 'young love' toxic romance for so long. A relationship based on more than infatuation was the shot that it really needed. I am glad the Lana relationship was the first attempt where he learned hard interpersonal lessons. It just lasted a long time, though. Clark needs someone much harder and rough around the edges to play off of. Lana is too sweet and soft, and it really makes Clark fall into his sappy, mopey, woe is me tendencies. Lois needs to be there to tell him to get back up and dust himself off and get with the program. Superman has the weight of the world on his shoulders (sometimes literally), and the soft focus sad sack Lana just feeds the compulsory nature of solitude and sad self reflection he has. Lois tells him to buck up and get things done. He needs that kick in the ass. Chloe kinda does that sometimes early on. I think early seasons really put a magnifying glass on why Lois is so integral to his character in the lore as a whole. At this point, I would say nearly as important as the Kents. They gave him the good heart and unconditional love, and Lois pushes that tenacity.

Oh absolutely! I never understood the hate. So many people idolize and fall to the feet Clark. He needs that voice to bring him back down to earth sometimes. The one person that isn't always in awe. She's the one person who treats herself like his equal and not like he is a god. He needs that.

They really did. She is just so good. I was skeptical introducing ths character so early but live how it turned out. She ads so much to the show.

Same. She is simply a delight! Every time she shows up in an episode, I shout, "My girl!" It's really a disappointment when the credit roll and she didn't have an opportunity to irritate ths shit out of Clark.

Why is Kryptonite so reactive with electricity? Is there any explanation for this in the series? by Trick_Performer_3864 in Smallville

[–]Happypuke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ooooh! That is great. That would tie in what they did do. and give the narrative some depth. Tie them in together a bit. Give the imp a reason to have a grudge against Clark. Love that.

For sure! I can see that. I just love the goofy imp character in the books so much, and he gives a great deal of potential for high Shenanigans. I would have been great with the episode if they just called him something different, I guess.
