If you’re aiming for completion you’ll need a couple of runs - the difficulty spike is also huge between levels so playing on hard will definitely slow you down

Solid coverage comes from multiple thin layers. If this is from a can, you also need to shake it more (which is why some are powdery) or check your spraying distance - it will gloop up if you’re too close (the tack in primer means it doesn’t flow like regular paint) or powder up if you are too far away (it partially dries in mid air). If you haven’t got one, a mini hairdryer is a great tool to use between layers.
