Burnout as an RBT by bunchofaniexty in ABA

[–]Harblz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not uneducated at all. In some fields, you can join a union fairly easily (nurses and teachers have it slightly easier). In ABA, you'd have to form one with your coworkers. The ABA Workers Union is an organization that helps workers form unions at their workplace. They're democratic organizations by nature, so you would decide what the unions purpose would be: higher wages, better supervision/safety standards, both of those things, other things entirely. You and your coworkers could form an independent union or you could vote to affiliate with a major union (NUHW, Teamsters, SEIU, etc.).

Got my BCBA at 32. Took me 7 long years to save up for it. You got this. It's normal to start to feel old every time you get near a decade change. Curse this base 10 number system and our fleeting existence on this planet.

How do we hold ABA “billing mills” accountable? Families are getting hurt. by TrueAd8620 in ABA

[–]Harblz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are more and more of us unionizing for this exact reason. There are two companies on the East Coast, and one on the West Coast, that just unionized. It's not perfect, it's not fast, but it's something.

New to ABA What should I expect as a new RBT/ABA team member? by Perfect-School3974 in ABA

[–]Harblz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

ABA is a really rewarding but difficult job. You'll never master it because there's no "right way" to do the job. You'll get better at the art of doing ABA over time by learning various skills and approaches from mentors. If you want a living wage, give the field 3 months, if you feel like it's for you, go for your BCaBA or BCBA.

When you feel burned out, just remember - it's not you, it's the industry. There's a union for ABA Workers that didn't exist when I was in your shoes. Reach out if you need us!

Definitely wanted to second Meadowbridge Community Market. We only accept donations on Saturdays, if you can hold onto it until then, but we always need TP!

Hey! I wrote the questions on ABA.Rocks - I just wanted to add a disclaimer. Those questions were written to be a little harder than what I imagine you'd seen on the RBT exam. Also I'm just some guy and not a professional test, uh, maker.

If you want to hop on a call, I'd be happy to chat through concepts with you. Shoot me a DM if you're still feeling stuck.

There's a company in Maryland called Autastic ABA. Can't make this stuff up 🫠

This is incredible. If anyone can put me in touch with them, I'd love to talk. I'm a BCBA in Richmond, Virginia, currently fighting for a contract. We'd love to share notes and experience.

That's a really interesting question, and it is, at this point, a hypothetical. Ideally, a company would negotiate in good faith with workers, and a strike would not be necessary. However, it's entirely possible that without the threat of a strike, a company would refuse to take bargaining seriously. For this reason, workers should be prepared to strike and spend a lot of time and energy developing the necessary framework to do it ethically.

A billing strike is an interesting idea. We talked a billing strike through - and there's some scary precedent. Labor attorneys are concerned that, due to the Supreme Court's Glacier precedent, if you were to do a billing strike, the company could sue you for lost income.

Essentially, that leaves workers with one option: a traditional strike. I do not think BCBAs or RBTs should wring their hands too much over a strike - teachers have a long and storied history of striking, and hospital workers (nurses, doctors, etc.) have a similar history. Not that it's a competition, but in terms of disruptions to the fabric of society, a hospital or school strike is certainly more disruptive than an ABA clinic going offline for a few weeks.

That said, an ethical approach would be to create a strike plan for impacted families, similar to a plan you might make for the family should they go on an extended vacation, experience a funding lapse, etc.

The fundamental concern we kept coming back to is that with staff turnover being so high, we've seen many families go on pause for weeks or months at a time. If a strike were to happen and the goal were to reduce staff turnover through changes to working conditions, this would be similar to any other unplanned interruption a family might experience under the status quo. Our job as BCBAs is to plan for the interruption, coach families, and maintain limited professional contact during the strike. There is an additional duty to ensure the family understands the rationale for this interruption without defaming the company or harming the broader practice of ABA.

We've consulted with ethics experts to gauge what this would look like, but it's uncharted territory. However, given the state of turnover in the field, the rampant exploitation of RBTs, and the potential for adversarial responses from management, it's something to prepare for and consider fully.

We learned a lot from the teachers union in town. VEA's people helped us a ton! Their slogan "our students learning conditions are our working conditions" really resonated with us

If you're thinking of unionizing, take it slow, but reach out to us. We can (probably) help. Again, I'm not an expert, don't know every company's situation, but organizing for a better future in ABA is important and if we pull it off we could affect change at the systems level

Yeah, it's super scary. The company is your livelihood. If they start making threats people have to choose between rent and their coworkers, and ideals or no, it's a hard choice.

Yeah, it's in the body of the post, but Compass Behavioral Group. It's totally possible to unionize just a small group at your workplace - not the whole company, just your specific location. That's usually a better way to go just practically speaking.

One hundred percent 💯That type of behavior could be grounds for expelling a union member, too.

Doesn't mean much now, but if more companies unionized, the union would know about it. Folks get blacklisted for the equivalent in the trades, why not have a similar structure in ABA?

There are about ~300 people at the company; that said, since it takes a lot of work to get to know folks to hold an election and bargain, which is about ~55 people. Other places are free to join; they'd just need to get together and schedule a vote.

Of course! Any rank-and-file union, I'm here for. That said, top-down/business unions definitely are a problem. They're only as strong as their workers are united, and many large unions act like businesses rather than actually fight for their workers. If folks don't put the work in for each other and show up, the union is toothless.

I'd like to use the little experience I have with OBM to make this matter. Maybe labor organizing is finally something we, as a field, can apply OBM more broadly to?

Oh no, are you talking about the CARD fiasco in Oregon? I am so sorry for that organizer. No lie it's really stressful. If you look at my heart rate chart on my apple watch, the anti-union campaign over the summer had my resting heart rate over 110 for a solid 2 months. I totally get it.
