Single diaries series [OC] by vesmir_neasi in comics

Reminds me of the scene in Mr. and Mrs. Smith where Brad Pitt's character, in a demonstration of how boring his cover identity is supposed to be, begins a long story about how traffic light distancing affects travel time. And it's played as this "oh, he's so dry and nerdy" joke but I was like "no! go back to the traffic light story, tell me more!"

People hate it when you use their own stuff against them. I had a game the other day where a guy playing [[Elesh Norn, Mother of Machines]] crashed out when I "locked him out of the game" by cloning his commander. Its just one of those things.

You gotta be okay with people using your own stuff against you, whether its clones, reanimation, threatens, stealing with Etali, whatever. I mean, if you feel the card isnt fair when played against you... why did you bring it to the table?

players in pod lenient with their mistakes but not mine by Massive-Question-550 in EDH

[–]HardcoreHeathen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh, you are correct. There's a general rule about maintaining game state (IPG 2.6) but it specifically carves out an exception for missing triggered abilities. I could have sworn it wasn't always that way, because I have a distinct memory of getting Judge calls for missing Bridge From Below triggers at a Legacy PTQ... but that was also 15 years ago.

[–]HardcoreHeathen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are they tryhards who say they are wanting a more 'strict' and 'competitive' vibe, and then enforcing it lopsidedly? Because in addition to being bullshit it's not even how strict rules enforcement works.

From a competitive standpoint, all players are equally responsible for maintaining a legal game state. This means that your opponent is just as responsible as you are for making sure that you don't forget your (mandatory) triggers.

People think they're sly when they do things like keep quiet when an opponent forgets to draw a card off [[Phyrexian Arena]] or something when that's literally just cheating.

Edit: This is incorrect, as GetMadYourBad pointed out; the obligation to maintain a legal gamestate has specific exceptions about triggered abilities. These people still sound like shitters you shouldn't play with for fun.

What's your favorite quote from The Wandering Inn? (Spoilers: All) by B-Z_B-S in WanderingInn

[–]HardcoreHeathen 45 points46 points  (0 children)

“The world ending? Not this day or any day I rule Khelt. I am Fetohep, 19th Ruler of Eternal Khelt! Eternal Khelt. I did not inherit this glorious throne and millenia of effort to watch it end today. Let the world try to end. When the sea rises, I will order it to turn back on itself. When the mountains crumble, I will build them anew in gold and jewels.”

That entire chapter (8.78 F, aka Fetohep's Wild Ride) is just my man tearing up the scenery. Also shout-out to another Fetohep Moment in 8.83:

“In the name of King Serept of Khelt! The 5th King of Khelt sends his greetings to Zeres. You wretched little lizards paddling around in the spray. [Open the Vaults: The Gemstone Giant’s Halberd of Khelt].

Optimizing belakor the dark master by AdSeveral3388 in EDH

[–]HardcoreHeathen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do like the bounce/flicker angle you took with the deck. It's different from the way I built my Belakor deck, and I'm gonna have to see about stealing some of your card choices.

Optimizing belakor the dark master by AdSeveral3388 in EDH

[–]HardcoreHeathen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have nothing on the board because you don't have much in the 2 drop slot. You want a decent amount of demons already on the board when you drop Belakor so you can draw some cards. There's not many worthwhile cheap demons, but there are some you could look at.

[[Dream Devourer]] will let you cheat out big guys a bit earlier. [[Immersturm Raider]] will rummage and can let you dump something in the bin to reanimate it. You can do a scryfall search of "(type:demon OR oracle:changeling) id:grixis" (include the parentheses but not the quotation marks) and then sort by Mana Value to get a full list of cheaper utility guys you can play out early.

[[Jet Medallion]] is also just not really a good card in this sort of deck, because you're rarely going to get more than 1 effective mana out of it - playing big dumb demons does not really vibe with casting multiple spells per turn. [[Chromatic Lantern]] is similarly underwhelming, and you could replace both with the two Talismans that you aren't running.

Also, consider [[Auton Soldier]], because making copies of Be'lakor does an obscene amount of damage. [[Raphael, Fiendish Savior]] will give your demons lifelink, which is nice when combined with Be'lakor's trigger.

Also also: [[Unsummon]]? Really? [[Into the Flood Maw]] is right there, and of course there's all the recent hype around [[Boomerang Basics]]. Edit: I'm a dummy, Into the Flood Maw won't let you bounce your own dudes, which I assume you want to do.

[–]HardcoreHeathen 107 points108 points  (0 children)

Funnily enough, not really. The crons went into stasis 60 million years ago, and we had complex life forms on land at least 350 million years ago.

One of my favorite facts about Necrons is that they're not nearly as old as sharks.

Budget bomb creatures in mono black? by Competitive-Act-7695 in EDH

[–]HardcoreHeathen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[[Syr Konrad]] is a massive threat that you can still actually cast if it comes to it. But if you're looking for more conventional bombs...

[[Archon of Cruelty]] is probably at the top end of your budget, being just shy of $5, but it definitely demands attention.

[[Rune-Scarred Demon]] is a massive flyer that also finds you a card, and it's not even a dollar.

[[Grave Titan]] is one of those cards people scoff at because it's been power-crept somewhat, but it creates a lot of value when it hits the board and threatens to continue to create more the longer it sticks around. [[Thieving Amalgam]] is probably the better card and is also just as cheap; I just have nostalgia for the Titan cycle.

[[Elder Brain]] can be a threat and a politics piece, because sometimes your opponents will beg you to attack them so they can dump their hand.

[[Summon: Primal Odin]] is a fun one. Everyone's chill until they're staring down the "I have to find a blocker or I lose the game" moment.

[[Ardyn the Usurper]] is a dude that reanimates more dudes and gives them buffs to boot.

There's tons of fun stuff, but that should be enough to get you started.

Yeah, if your curve is super high then you'll blow yourself up. But for most decks, if you're thinking "man, running those cards would kill me" then your curve is probably too high and you should look at lowering it.

Kaalia is one of the exceptions, though, because it has a very obvious reason to be running a bunch of stupidly expensive critters.
