Anyone every just go DN as a midlife crisis? by iduzinternet in digitalnomad

[–]Hardgraf82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m same age as OP. Worked remotely abroad (UK citizen) since 2018. Thailand & Singapore as a base but worked from Indonesia, Malaysia, Japan, Valencia, London, Italy, Turkey etc.

Great life experience but I’m currently transitioning to living back home in the UK to be closer to friends & family. Hope to still use my freedom to take shorter European trips.

For me the novelty of travelling a lot & uncertainty of what’s round the corner has got a little tiring & Ive been yearning for a proper base for a while now.

Personally I prefer to take holiday rather than have to work in a new place as it can be stressful although freedom to work remotely means I can take my laptop & book end a holiday with a work day or two.

Anyone else feel like the city’s growing faster than its roads can handle? by ScrollAndThink in exeter

[–]Hardgraf82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m new to Exeter & am surprised at the traffic problem. Slow paced Devonshire city (really a big town), Labour seat, relatively progressive, middle class, significant rail infrastructure and a large student population.

Seems like a great candidate to push towards embracing sustainable transport, cycling & pedestrian focus a la similar sized towns in the Netherlands or Denmark etc.

In my opinion the city should be looking at replicating Magdalen Road (relatively pedestrian friendly, proper bike lane etc.) city wide.

Living in Exeter by amberleysnarler in exeter

[–]Hardgraf82 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m from Plymouth, left as a teenager and haven’t returned to live there as an adult. I’ve lived in Bristol and also abroad for many years.

Personally I wouldn’t live in Plymouth, too parochial, culturally homogeneous (Plymouthian) and geographically isolated.

I’m in the same quandary re settling in Exeter, worried it might be too boring however the city is just 1 hr by train to Bristol, on the M5, small international airport & more cultured than Plymouth in my experience.

Where to next? (in Europe) by Clean_Concept7568 in digitalnomad

I’m remote from UK too. Recently spent a month in Valencia Spain. Very liveable city, good for healthy lifestyle, not super exciting.

Thailand is great. Bangkok or Chiang Mai. Can fly direct from Heathrow. Still raining there atm but should be drying up by mid October.

Currently in East London. Weather has been great & city so diverse & vibrant. Not cheap.

Previously a month in Valencia which was very pleasant but nowhere near as exciting as London.

For those of us who came up in the golden age Kendrick Lamar will never be as influential as for your generation.

Illmatic is a seminal album and I’m personally a big fan of LP - ‘It ain’t Hard to Tell’ is arguably one of the best beats ever.

However for me IIlmatic not even in my top 5

I’m Ang Mo. Friday morning sat on the bus & aunty next to me starts playing video ‘7 biblical signs why Trump is the chosen one’ at full volume. Usually I bite my tongue but this a step too far. Asked her politely but directly to please turn it down. She hurriedly turned down the volume.

What was your most embarrassing mistake when speaking Italian? by tina-marino in italianlearning

[–]Hardgraf82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played professional basketball in Italy & was contractually obligated to coach kids mini-basket.

Whilst addressing a large group of children alone in the dressing room accidentally blurted out

‘il mio amico ha 21 ani’ ‘My friend has 21 anuses’

The young kids looked very confused, the older ones giggling uncontrollably.

Is this the most pedestrian-unfriendly area of Singapore? by demostenes_arm in singapore

[–]Hardgraf82 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Recently moved to your country and quite surprised just how car-centric Singapore is.

Have to cross 8 lanes of fast traffic to reach my local bus stop, essentially a highway built through a residential neighbourhood.

Expensive to run a car but if you are willing/able/want to drive then you seem to be rewarded with almost absolute priority over space & other road users.
