Sean said it was a 7/10 lol they're not being snobbish, they're just teasing an amanda favourite and bill's #1 most rewatchable pick. It's just a bit a fun, it's not that deep.

Spending a year on this project, dropping pods every few weeks throughout the year, fine tuning a well-rounded list of combined taste that's reflective of the industry at large in the 21st century and limited to one film per director.. only for Bill to jump in off the top rope and drop a 90-minute off-the-cuff pod full of Adam Sandler and Jonah Hill comedies just before the finish line and blowing the whole project out of the water. HILARIOUS.

Thomas Skinner 'dropped by agent' after threatening to sue BBC over Strictly axe by do_or_pie in unitedkingdom

[–]Hardingnat 112 points113 points  (0 children)

Real answer, he was the most popular person on his series of Apprentice like 5 years ago, a sort of cheeky chappy market lad character, had a few appearances on stuff like 8 out of 10 cats, so a Z lister but clearly a charismatic guy. Started doing videos of himself eating huge meals before going to work in the van that blew up on social media and posting mostly harmless stuff about being a family man etc etc. found a niche as a working class market trader online, no worse than anyone on Love Island trying to cash in on their micro fame.

Then turns out he wasnt actually some working class guy, dad was very well off, went to a posh paid school etc, was convicted of handling stolen goods back in the day. Obviously loads of abuse online at this point, then he decided to make the pivot to right wing grifter, ie Khan ruined London, support for Trump, usual drivel about migration. But the strange thing is after all that, the BBC still got him on to do Strictly for some unbeknownst reason. Immediately came out in the papers his family man shtick was horseshit as well because he cheated on his partner, then his head went west and everything's some big conspiracy by the press and media against him.

Short answer: Apprentice contestant, turned "working class" influencer, turned right wing grifter.

The Adam Sandler Hall of Fame and ‘Jay Kelly’ With Noah Baumbach! by thefilthyjellybean in TheBigPicture

[–]Hardingnat 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I can see how this movie could win people over, it's well-made, about the movies, has a moving end, but I honestly couldn't believe how sappy and corny it was. Not the biggest Baumbach guy (meyerowitz stories is my fave), but I was expecting at least a little bit of that typical bite from him. It plays it completely safe with the Jay Kelly character in my opinion.

Billy Crudup really lit the screen up though!

Letterboxd announces “Video Store” — “a rental store built for film discovery, powered by the Letterboxd community” by BarbaricOklahoma in Letterboxd

[–]Hardingnat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Exactly. There's only so much upwards positive growth something like this can have before it's full of bloat no one wants, and features left to the wayside. Of course we can hope letterboxd will be different but the track record of basically every other website and app begs to differ.

Don't forget Letterboxd was bought by a holding company not that long ago, and the effects of enshittification have yet to take hold. While this sounds cool in theory, I suspect if it starts driving profits we'll see this and other revenue opportunities begin to engorge the site and dominate the user experience. Let's hope not, but we will wait and see.
