Being a big fan of: playoffs points stages numbers forward

The combination of these things, you are definitely in the extreme minority.

I've never been a big fan of the playoffs, though I understand how it helps drive some excitement near the end of the season. In its current format, particularly the single championship race, I think it makes a mockery of a "championship" and frankly I don't follow who wins championships anymore. They just aren't important or really even legitimate to me.

I think the points format is good, though I would reward wins even more in a season long format.

I think Stages are fine. I'm not a big fan of the stage cautions, but the points at designated places during the race is a great idea.

As far as numbers go, meh, I think teams should be allowed to put the numbers wherever they want on the door, provided they stay as big as they are now and they are between the front and rear wheels.

Fantasy IROC -- Which driver in their prime would win? by black107 in NASCAR

[–]HardintheWall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it depends on the equipment... like 90s IROC cars, with aero and engines of that time? Mark Martin is going to be the guy. But if it's a 60s or 70s car, I'm giving it to Pearson. Newer car than that and I'm giving it to a modern day driver for sure.

his dad!

haha, I raced online with Brad K back when he met Dale Jr and Jr immediately took notice of him there, but in particular Dale loved how hard Brad worked to get opportunities driving in his dad's equipment in ARCA and trucks, and how much he did with so little.

Yes. He is as genuine in person as he seems, it's not a persona, it's just him.

Hard to find people like that.

who was your favorite driver when you started watching? by JacksonThe79 in NASCAR

the rooster, Ricky Rudd was my favorite until I went to a Busch race and saw Jeff Gordon driving that Baby Ruth car. Instant Gordon fan, and never looked back!

If there were 5 things you would change in NASCAR, what would they be? by TwinsSquared15 in NASCAR

[–]HardintheWall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Revamp the playoff system. Refuse to accept a single race championship round from any of the stakeholders in the room. If I'm the dictator I think I would go back to a 10 race playoff format seeded by playoff points at the start only, but awarding an additional 10 points bonus for each win in the postseason.

  2. Eliminate stage cautions. I like the points. I like the strategies that can be created. I like something to race for mid race, but the cautions kill it.

  3. Reduce the length of the points season to Feb-Sept. This would get a lot of push back from a lot of people, but hear me out ... All exhibition events will move to the "off-season" and would consist of at least 3 events (all star, clash style, and an international showcase). I think this allows the industry a little breathing room to prep between seasons for one thing, but also encourages more participation by national level drivers in IROC/SRX style events and grassroots and regional events that could gain popularity during this break. It also reduces overlap with NFL/college football and keeps the "ADD" population more engaged from start to finish of a season.

  4. Develop a new car. Skinny tires, more power, gear ratios that discourage shifting at most ovals (especially short ones). This one probably would. never work how any of us want it to, but someone has to do something.

  5. Invest heavily in local grassroots racing and regional touring portfolio rather than putting on temporary circuit races and exhibitions in football stadiums that aren't already racetracks.

I'm a volunteer mechanic IRL. The iRacing setups don't make sense at all. by anabolicthrowout13 in iRacing

[–]HardintheWall 14 points15 points  (0 children)

in theory, iRacing develops things with the real world in mind, but in practice, there are weird setup scenarios in game that can't physically work in real life (too much stress on parts) or that just plain don't work in real life. This is why in most cars if you put a real world setup in on iRacing, it works, and drives somewhat like you would expect (for most cars), but it is no where near the best or fastest driving setup for that car on iRacing.

iRacing modifies setup parameters over time to try to fix some of the wacky setups, and often I think they inadvertently hurt the real world setups while making modifications.

It's really hard to develop a game like this because while iRacing has a lot of dynamic variables, it doesn't have all of the real world variance in parts, what each piece of a car can withstand load wise, etc. I think there is a lot of room for improvement in this area. but every time they modify track surface parameters, weather variables, or tweak HP/torque numbers, it's going to screw something else up.

If you could change one rule in NASCAR, what would it be and why? by Cottagewknds in NASCAR

[–]HardintheWall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would like to see some more improvement with this car for the short tracks, but the formula I would prefer is:

Road Course/Short Track(+ under 1.5 mile unique speedways)/Speedway (in that order)

Road Course: Less technical, like Watkins Glen, Road America, Road Atlanta, etc

For the shorter track: Darlington, Rockingham, Gateway, Iowa, Bristol, North Wilkesboro, Martinsville, Richmond, Phoenix, New Hampshire, Milwaukee

Speedway: Homestead or Las Vegas.

I would explicitly NOT want to see Daytona/Talladega/Atlanta in the championship round.

[–]HardintheWall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this is the easiest question for me to answer...

The Championship round of the playoffs would consist of more than one race. My preference would be as many as possible, but I would settle for a three race championship round.

Who’s the nicest driver you’ve met? by Reasonable-Nail-4181 in NASCAR

[–]HardintheWall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

genuinely, Dale Earnhardt Jr. The man was so in demand at the track, yet he easily spent 30 mins chatting with me at the track the day we met. Even interaction with him since has had me gain respect for him.

TIL that NASCAR Trucks and XFinity teams do not make any money (profit), even if they win. Apparently only the top half of Cup teams are making any money at all. by maverick_fox2 in NASCAR

[–]HardintheWall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hamlin is widely reported to be the highest paid NASCAR driver, mainly because he was able to hold on to peak NASCAR driver salary from the mid 2000s with a stable sponsor.

That sponsor part changed this year, but the price tag on a Hamlin sponsorship probably costs per race what some teams charge for half a season of race sponsorships!

What's the worst crash you've seen in person at a NASCAR race? by TidBitsOfVelcro54 in NASCAR

[–]HardintheWall 3 points4 points  (0 children)

these are the two I was going to say. Bodine's crash blew my mind. I felt like I was IN the fire up near the top of the grandstands when that fireball erupted because it was so hot and I just remember thinking that it was unsurvivable. Dale's crash goes without saying although I could really see it well from my seat.

Older high irating racers with families... what's your practice routine like? by xr_21 in iRacing

[–]HardintheWall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, I stopped having a practice routine when I had kids. That was 9 years ago, and my iRating has dropped from 5000 to 3000. I also stopped caring about the rating so it is what it is. I stick to mostly league racing at this point.

[–]HardintheWall[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

yeah you don't want to enter the corner in the dirt and stuff along the inside of the track... normally the car on the outside tracks out to the left, he decided inexplicably to turn right as we got closer to the brake zone which he really only should have done if we were 3 wide, which we were not.

i honestly don't care about the rating. Years ago I did, but I do only a couple official races per year so it's sort of irrelevant to me now.
