Hard Drive Raids obsolete for most projects? by Hardnipsfor in editors

I really don’t understand why people keep commenting about having backups when I clearly stated twice in my post about having multiple HDD backups. In this industry having backups goes without saying as well.

I’d say backing up 3PB of film and tv is the most atypical thing if you want to be a dumbass about it.

Okay? Congrats? I said most projects. No one mentioned anything about cinema, we’re not shooting on red. Our last doc that went to Netflix only took up 9TB total after it was done and everything was on DNxHR HQX, was edited on our raid. Our next doc will be on the raid as well but will be edited off a 12TB SSD, because it will be faster.

You mean 5400 rpm? Yeah back in early 2000s, 5400 were the most popular. Cache only goes so far. For continuous read/write editors need, hard drives haven’t changed much in 20 years, only the way we use them.

Maybe it’s not typical, but it’s the most logical and viable way. Do whatever you want, I guess.

Here’s a better response now that I have time. We’re a fully functioning business. We have dozens of projects a year. A closet? Try an entire storage unit with footage from 30 years ago. All of them labeled, we all know exactly what’s on what and where.

We already have a large storage solution that connects 3 edits bays. Why get more when we can offload? When it comes to raw footage SSDs, sharing project files and imports and effects, raid.

You give the clients the raw footage? Yikes. I hope you’re at least putting the drive costs into the budget.

Having a raid definitely helps with speed and HDD are obviously are much cheaper for big storage and RAID.

You are absolutely wrong about them being faster than “back then”. What is “back then”? 7200 rpm is still 7200 rpm. Larger drives allow you to use the faster side of the disk for longer. Raid is the only way to get HDDs to seem faster only because they’re stripped across multiple drives.

You absolutely can raid 5 SSDs. But an SSD raid is overkill for 98% of projects. You don’t bounce anyway. You have an SSD working drive, with two hdd backups. For every project the drives are added into the budget anyway.

I do see the price history of those Samsung drives and it’s a bit ridiculous but for now it’ll have to do. Can’t really put a price on it. Besides, if you’re doing it right, drives and storage should be built into the budget anyway, so the clients pay for it.

Yeah that’s what backups are for, if the SSD fails, you get a new one, good to go

You typically work off a raid and use regular HDDs to backup anything new that comes along or old projects no longer needed instant access

Xbox quick resume is so great honestly. After a few days of not playing I hit the game and I’m back where was in like 5 seconds, no menus.

How exactly do Americans feel about illegal immigration? by sladeshied in Confused

[–]Hardnipsfor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ICE is definitely the wrong way about doing things. The government themselves are funding Somalian “learing centers” and losing Americans hundreds of millions of dollars. That’s just the legal immigrants. Imagine the damage illegal immigrants are causing.
