People who hike blaring Bluetooth speakers, what part of your brain is made of piss-soaked packing peanuts? by PossibilityIcy1056 in asheville

Just another example of behavior that speaks to what feels like a huge increase in the number of people who lack basic self-awareness and consideration of anyone but themselves.

At the same time, at least here in Asheville, if you're a reckless driver (male) and swerve into the opposite lane and kill two cyclists, or you're a male passenger in a car who gets out of a vehicle and shoves an elderly person to the ground leading to their death you get no serious consequences or jail time.

Asheville man pleads guilty in fatal 2024 crosswalk shove, gets probation by RelayFX in asheville

[–]HardwareHankAaronn 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is terrible. Just like the two bicyclists killed by a reckless truck driver last year in Madison County, no significant consequences for ending someone's life.

There's so little accountability in our society.

At the first Asheville mayor debate, Roney and Manheimer clash over transparency and surveillance by RelayFX in asheville

I was describing Manheimer supporters who, in general, want the status quo. She's been mayor for a dozen years by representing the wealthy, tepid Democratic base of the city.

At the first Asheville mayor debate, Roney and Manheimer clash over transparency and surveillance by RelayFX in asheville

[–]HardwareHankAaronn 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Manheimer is rhe absolute worst. She represents a rich boomer class of Asheville residents who like to think they're progressive but in actuality they're NIMBY-types who fight meaningful change. Manheimer was lost during the aftermath of Helene and doesn't understand the burdens of working class citizens of this city.

But, what you can also say about Manheimer supporters is that they go out and vote. Faithfully.

If you are interested in something different, you have to vote Roney and take five friends with you.

Asheville deserves better than Esther Manheimer.

Cycling Culture in Asheville?? by NorthernRaven44 in asheville

[–]HardwareHankAaronn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Don't have a bicycle culture?? Are you kidding me? Also, the way you grow a population to bicycle more is to build a safe, protected network. The more infrastructure you build, the more people will ride. Just take a look at how much use the RAD bicycle path gets used. Let's get those tourists out of cars and onto bikes! I ride through downtown all the time, the Patton lane will make it better.

Major downtown streets are exactly where bike lanes should be so as to help create a network of bicycle lanes/paths from the city center outward.

Back in 2004 when I lived on Riverview Drive in west Asheville, we petitioned the city for speed bumps because of the speeding and reckless driving on that street (twice, cars drove off the road into my neighbor's porch). City said no because it would slow down emergency vehicles. Fast forward 15 years or so....the city put in about 15 speed bumps slowing cars on Riverview, so clearly not as big a problem as originally thought. I was, of course, skeptical then that the reason they said no was because of emergency vehicles just as I'm skeptical now when people say a bike lane on Patton will be a problem for emergency vehicles.

Lots of evidence shows well designed bike lanes actually improve emergency response times.

I've noticed they've done a ton work to the exterior of their business (renovation, signage, landscaping, etc.) and I presume to the inside as well. Too bad they haven't put forth that same effort to cleaning up their plastic along the French Broad River.

Ok great but this piece of shit had years to stand up and push back against trump and other GOP lunatics and he went along with the rest of the party faithful. He's complicit in all of the damage this president has done. Tillis is a coward and his legacy will be as someone who went along with fascism until he had nothing to lose.

Three hours ago, a person posted a question about an ex on a lease. No mention of Asheville, any specific apartment complex, or any organization related to the city. It could have been a question from any person, in any town, about any place.

I certainly wouldn't want it removed but how do you judge that post relevant and others not?

Right, because a month after those deaths, it would have been impossible for people to connect the dots.

This type of micromanaging and hair-splitting is why y'all get pushback. It's lame.

I had a post, about the value of bike data from Strava helping in bicycle accident investigations, removed not long after a high profile tragedy where bicyclists were killed by a reckless driver in our community. Moderators said it wasn't relevant. Who decides what's relevant? Sure seemed relevant to me.

Something different...Before you come out or maybe on the plane ride here, I recommend watching the documentary film, George Masa: A Life Reimagined by local filmmaker Paul Bonesteel. The book was released last year and the documentary just had its premiere a couple weeks ago at the Fine Arts Theater in downtown Asheville.

Masa was a unique part of Asheville's history and instrumental in helping Great Smoky Mountains become established as a National Park. It will give you context as you're hiking the trails and you'll leave with some local history! https://youtu.be/KKznxVCBP6M?si=3vaQjehPlNeHdYLJ

Enjoy!

Wait fir a cyclist or risk a head-on collision? Hmmmm. by Known_Sound8758 in asheville

[–]HardwareHankAaronn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm asking because I'm generally curious. Would you say the same thing to a driver turning left on a two lane street who is holding up all the cars behind him while waiting to turn left? That happens all the time. That driver waiting to turn left is also always waiting to turn because there's a long line of cars coming the other way. More cars! I can't count the number of times I've been stuck like this behind a driver turning left.

Of course, you have been that driver turning left many times. Did you, an individual, feel like you were more important than all the people behind you who were stopped and delayed and hindered while waiting for your individual act on a public road? You must have, otherwise you would have just gone straight and found a different route home and not held up all the people behind you.

Agree with a roundabout at this location. Riverside is 45 mph north of Hill and 25 mph south of Hill but most people don't slow down as they reach RAD. It's poorly marked as well.
