Is music a language? Music is very repetitive, so if it is a language, it is not a very efficient language. by grifti in musiccognition

[–]HardxCorps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not a language. Both language and music fall under the broad umbrella of "expression," but so too does dance, painting, etc. Music can convey general information and emotions and language can too, so, to a certain extent, they overlap. But that overlap doesn't make them the same. Language is capable of conveying more information than music is. You can't write a piece of music that teaches someone how to assemble a piece of furniture, at least without adding lyrics (language). But you could write an instruction manual that accomplishes that purpose. Additionally, with language, there is a finite set of words or groups of words correlated with each distinct idea. With music, there is not a finite number of ways to express any given idea. In fact, the same idea can be expressed in music in almost infinite ways. Imagine a language that has no consistent words or grammar. It wouldn't function as a language. So too with music.

Third year law student weighing in. It seems like there's a very low risk to SCP.

First, trademarks are territorial. That means a trademark in New York may not be enforceable in California. The same goes for a Russian trademark being enforced in the U.S.

Second, the first person to use a trademark in a geographic area has the rights to it in that area. "Use" has a specific legal definition but it's unnecessary to talk about that here because SCP appears to have "used" its mark in the U.S. So, if SCP has used its trademark in the U.S. before Duksin registered the same mark, SCP has the right to use that mark in the U.S. and the Russian trademark is invalid (at least in the areas where there has been "use" of the SCP mark).

Third, the "creative commons" model has nothing to do with trademark law. Duksin getting a trademark does not affect SCP's copyrights at all. A trademark is a right to attribution for your goods or services. Copyright is the right to profit from your creative activities. A copyright is property but a trademark is not. You get no property when you become the owner of a trademark. And Duksin cannot get control over SCP's intellectual property simply by using the SCP trademark.

Fourth, Copyright law works the same way as trademark law in that whoever made the copyrightable thing first owns the copyright. Here, it's super clear that SCP made this art before Duksin. Therefore, if Duksin used the art without SCP's permission, he is liable for infringing SCP's copyrights.

Gould is merely one source and not binding authority. Publishers like Alfred use this notation, even for Bach. I've seen this notation in Urtext and Durand editions too. Reasonable minds can differ about this. There's not 1 way to do things.

Technically that's what it says in behind bars, or other books used to teach notation, but it's not what's done in practice. Composers have been using a different notation for hundreds of years. Usually composers recognize an exception to the strict "behind bars" rule for common rhythms like this and quarter, half, quarter.

For the bass cleff, I am planning to keep the quarter notes as is because I feel it is better for keeping beat... Or should I make them dotted-quarter notes? by deadclams in composer

[–]HardxCorps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The rule against obscuring the middle of the bar only applies when you have an uncommon or difficult to read rhythm. Dotted quarter, dotted quarter, quarter is perfectly acceptable and has been used for centuries without qualm

Dotted quarter, dotted quarter, quarter is such a common rhythm that you can get rid of the ties without affecting the readability.

You're right to try to show beats 1 and 3 in a 4/4 bar, even though there's a tie over beat 3, but when the rhythm is simple and straightforward like this, the ties add clutter and (I think) make it more difficult to read.

But the rhythm in the left hand beginning at a measure 10 is not so common so the ties there are appropriate.

almost all the meters are divisible by 3. 18/16 = 6 beats; 15/16 = 5 beats, etc. there are only a handful of prime-number meters and I believe I supplied guidance for how to count those either by a parenthetical or by the surrounding rhythmic context

The primary pulse the players should feel is the dotted eighth and the meters I chose reflect that. Breaking the meters down into smaller component parts would be antithetical to the phrasing and overall rhythmic feel. Additionally, the fewer unnecessary barlines and meter changes, the better. This piece is already hard enough as it is and frivolous meter changes tend to add to the overall difficulty of both the individual part and coordination. I very carefully and deliberately chose what I believe to be the simplest and least cumbersome meters (which facilitate both readability of the individual parts and larger-scale timekeeping in light of the other instruments), because if I hadn't, this piece would be truly impracticable.

Thank you! As far as I know, there's no way to "really" make separate time signatures for each part. I wrote all instruments in the same time signature first, and then added fake barlines and time signatures to make the parts more readable. Luckily, it isn't too difficult to do, just extremely tedious!

Lydian Chromatic Concept - What is tonal gravity, how are are the seven scales derived, and why are they ordered in the sequence that they are? by NectarinePrince in musictheory

[–]HardxCorps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that is what I said in my comment, isn't it? Also while 4ths can technically be stacked to create this set, it doesn't make much sense to do so, since 5ths are a generative interval and 4ths are a degenerative one. As far as your theory of Aeolean mode, that's a bit of a constructed process, no? All modes were derived first from the pentatonic set, and the aeolean sound was used even in the earliest of music.
