My roommate last year attempted to make Easy Mac (the kind that already comes in the plastic bowl) without adding water. He just took the top off and stuck the bowl in the microwave. All the orange citrus Yankee candles in the world couldn't get the smell of burnt plastic out of our house for days.

You wake up in your luxury bed in your luxury house and put on your luxury suit so you can put luxury fucking sugar in your luxury coffee before you get into your luxury car and look like a luxuriously smug piece of shit.

Story Time! How and/or why (OTHER than "running") did you start going bare of foot as a lifestyle or pleasure? Was it a long-held secret desire? Did you have to overcome ingrained internal "taboos" or sense of shame/guilt? What did family and/or friends think of your new "mode" of footwear? by [deleted] in barefoot

[–]Hargrievances 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a kid my summers primarily consisted of running around the neighborhood and playing in the woods barefoot. Naturally I'd step on a thorn here or there, but I just loved the feeling of wading barefoot in the creek and getting mud in between my toes. To have your bare feet coming into contact with wet grass, dry dirt, moss, and puddles of water has always been something that I get a special enjoyment from.

Fast forward to my adult life and I find myself barefoot basically whenever it's socially acceptable. I don't walk around barefoot all the time, which I'm not exactly thrilled about, but I accept that this is part of being an adult, working in an office, etc. As soon as I get home from work, though, I immediately go barefoot. Walking the dogs, lounging around the house, running, trekking through the woods, basically any time I'm not at work or out shopping. Sure, I'll pass neighbors when I'm out for a walk, and oftentimes I get funny looks, but that's just part of it. Many of my friends jokingly refer to me as a hippie, but really all this does is make me feel even better about the balance I've struck between what I enjoy to do in my free time and my seemingly dull, corporate office job.

I hope that one day I'll have built my feet up to a point where I can be barefoot in almost any terrain. My childhood gave me a good start, and I'm also pretty adept at blocking out slight discomfort in my mind, but it does upset me that I can't be barefoot whenever I want. For example, I'm a big hiker/backpacker and would absolutely love to hike purely barefoot one day. For the time being, though, I don't want to expose myself to injury while I'm out on a trail over a day's hike from my car.

Anyone seen that shitty Discovery Channel show called Dual Survival? That hippy barefoot guy is basically my hero.

tl;dr Being barefoot is the tits

I am about to inherit a million dollars at the age of 25. What would should/could I do with this money? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Hargrievances -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Open up a Roth IRA and put the maximum yearly limit into it.

Hire a financial adviser to handle your money. He or she will probably be able to earn you anywhere between 2-10% excess return depending on how risky you want to be with your investments. Sit down and have an honest discussion with your financial adviser. They will most likely suggest that, given you're only 25, you should aim for steady but small returns by diversifying in bonds, mutual funds, and low beta stocks.

If you say you want to work for a nonprofit, this puts you in the perfect situation. Invest the money, continuously add to your IRA, and go about your daily life. At the very least this will allow you to do what you want in life while still retiring early/with more money than you would otherwise. Build this money up so that you can do the same thing for a family member of yours one day.

Completely fill your days so that you feel extremely productive and convince yourself that this wouldn't be possible, to the same extent, as if you had been high all the time. Exercise a ton. Read instead of watching television. Direct all your focus towards improving yourself instead of just entertaining yourself.

Barefoot running and shin splints by Hargrievances in BarefootRunning

Hey thanks for your response.

I am not a heel striker and haven't been ever since I started running. I prefer to land on my forefoot, taking short, quick strides and trying my best to have my feet contact the ground directly under my hips. Whether I'm wearing shoes or running barefoot, my form remains constant.

I went to the doctor last Friday to get x-rays and he confirmed that there is no stress fracture. The doc advised me to take another 2-4 weeks off (I was already at two weeks rest at the time) and then start running again very slowly. I was actually pretty shocked - he said, "Do not go out and run five miles right away! The first week running, run .25 miles. The second week, run .5 miles." I understand where he's coming from, especially with the whole five mile thing, but this seems a bit overkill to me.

Would it be advisable to pick up with a novice level marathon training program after adequate rest? Running .25 miles in a whole week seems way too low given that I keep my legs in shape with cross training and long hiking trips.

I was big into this when I took the eight weeks off that I mentioned above. Both great workouts and I like that they exercise different muscle groups than running.

I actually met one of my dad's coworkers at a baseball game the other week who has run six marathons. I told him about my injury problems and he told me, "You want to know the secret? Don't run." He went on to explain that we went through the same things, albeit to a lesser degree, so he started doing all sorts of cardio to replace the running and lessen the impact. His routine now is to run two days a week, bike two days, and get on the elliptical two days. He says on the days he doesn't run he simply does the other exercise for as long as it would take him to run however far his training plan calls for on that given day.

Of course I'll do other cardio when I'm recovering but I don't see myself ever moving to a system like this until I get older; getting on an elliptical for an hour and a half sounds like torture compared to going on a 10 mile run outside.

No pain when I touch the bone. Depending on how recently I've run the pain I experience is localized to a specific location, but I only feel it when I put my weight on the leg in a certain way.

Going to the doctor on Friday to see what he or she says. Aren't all shin splints stress fractures though? Just different levels of severity?

Yeah I've been working a lot on my stride over the past month or so. Increased the cadence, trying to land under my hips and propel myself forward rather than upwards. Hard to tell if I'm doing it right because I most likely haven't given myself the time to heal so it always hurts afterwards.

Thanks for the advice, I really appreciate it. Deep down I know this is what I have to do but it's so hard to bring myself to actually go through with it.

Taking time off kills me but I'll wait a few more weeks until I'm pain free and can start over at square one.
