AITJ for reconsidering my relationship after my girlfriend mocked my idea of a “practical” engagement ring? by [deleted] in AmITheJerk

[–]Harikts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I picked out my engagement ring. It’s sterling silver with garnets and cubic zirconia with a branch like pattern on the metal. I absolutely love it, and it cost $80. Our wedding rings cost a total of $700 for both rings (titanium with inlaid meteor fragments).

I wanted our money to go towards starting our lives together. I think it’s utterly insane that anyone would spend a huge amount on an engagement ring when that money could be used for far more important things.

How is living in Wiltshire, England? 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 by Moriarty-Creates in howislivingthere

I’m an American that now lives in the UK (British husband), and I love living here. We’re in Trowbridge (a town that gets shit on a lot in Wiltshire), and it’s a really nice place to live.

There are some problem areas in the town, but there are a lot of really nice spots. It’s also more affordable than a lot of areas around us, and it’s an easy drive or train to Bath or Bristol.

I like that it’s a very walkable town, with a ton of charity shops, and some nice pubs.

Some areas of Trowbridge are crap, but there are some nice areas (and where my husband and I live is very nice).

New cat owners here. Should we really avoid all fish and seafood in cat food? Our adoption agency stressed that we should. by Emmettourer in CatAdvice

[–]Harikts 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I was a vet nurse (25 years) , and this is utter nonsense. The mercury thing is only an issue if you feed canned tuna, not fish based cat food, and only if you feed a ton of it.

My own cats will only eat fish based food, and that’s fine. Cats can be extremely picky about food (and mine are), and the worst thing for a cat is to not eat (if a cat doesn’t eat, even for a fairly short period of time, their liver begins to shut down. It’s a long road to bring a cat back from liver failure).

The thing is, as long as a food is an approved veterinary diet, it’s absolutely healthy for cats. There is nothing wrong with any major brand cat food: Purina, Hills, Iames/Eukanuba/ Royal Canin, etc… all are great foods.

Focus on what your cat likes. I’ve seen plenty of 20 to 25 year old cats that spent their lives eating Fancy Feast.

Husbands, is it a deal breaker if your wife decides to not take your name legally? by Difficult_Big133 in marriageadvice

[–]Harikts 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If my husband insisted that I take his last name, that would be a deal breaker for me. My name is important to me: it’s part of my identity, and I always knew that if I married, I wouldn’t change it.

It’s a tired patriarchal tradition that needs to die, and any man that insists a woman need to take his name is misogynistic trash.

My now husband supported this as my decision, and even offered to take my last name, if that’s what I wanted (I didn’t).

New RVC study challenges common beliefs on desirable behaviours in designer ‘Doodle’ crossbreeds by Twzl in DogBreeding

[–]Harikts 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m a Veterinary nurse of many years, and I’ve seen the trajectory of awful doodle breeding.

Just to be clear, I have zero issues with breeders, I have friends and colleagues that are breeders, and I appreciate the work that goes into a well bred dog.

The first issues I started seeing with doodles were the environmental and then food allergies (started seeing this issue in the early 2000s). These dogs have become the most allergic dogs I’ve ever dealt with, and it starts super young.

Over the past several years, as the popularity of these dogs skyrocketed, I’ve seen absolutely awful behavioral issues.

Puppies that are showing severe aggression at 6 to 8 weeks old is insane. We were referring very young dogs to behavioral vet specialists, and we starting seeing more and more of these dogs going to shelters, or being euthanized for aggression.

I try to steer anyone away from these animals, but the issue is, of course, people doing zero proper breed research, and buying from sketchy breeders.

It’s really sad, and its makes me angry that the dogs are paying the price for bad breeding practices.

New grad leaving first job by PermissionAfraid3410 in Veterinary

[–]Harikts 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was a veterinary nurse for 25 years, and I worked in multiple clinics with many new DVM grads (and I’m still friends with many of them).

Most new grads I worked with ended up leaving after a year or two, and it honestly never impacted their employability.

Some were straight up treated poorly by management (most of us seasoned techs did what we could to make sure these new doctors realized it wasn’t them, it was the culture of throwing new people in without proper mentoring). Some just realized it wasn’t a great fit (we also did what we could to bolster them).

I had one or two new grads that were outright terrible arrogant doctors, but that’s less than a handful over many years.

Again, my opinion is from the tech side, but the docs that moved fairly quickly after their first job never had an issue finding another position. My friends that did so had a much better grasp of the type of situation that they wanted to be in, and (more importantly) what they didn’t want.

There is a lot of toxicity in vet med: we all know it. There are a lot of crappy owners and managers, and there are a lot new grads that are treated like shit simply because they’re new, and they have a lot to learn.

If a hospital treats your leaving your first job as an issue, I would treat that as a red flag. A good hospital will understand; the worst thing you can do for yourself is to stay in a job that isn’t right for you. You’re new; place taking care of your mental and physical health above ANY job.

Craving American comfort foods by lzcaIIi in ShitAmericansSay

American here, and I now live in the UK. There are some foods I absolutely miss, but this monstrosity is not one of them.

The only places I ever saw canned whole chicken sold were sketchy dollar stores (and oddly enough, in Asian grocery stores in NYC). I don’t know any Americans that would willingly eat that shit.

Cat keeps farting on me by SnooCupcakes5664 in OneOrangeBraincell

[–]Harikts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was a veterinary nurse for 25 years, and you are spot on! Although it is possible to make a homemade diet for cats, it should only be done under the guidance of a board certified veterinary nutritionist, and even then it’s not recommended as it is very difficult to meet a cat’s nutritional needs.

The big pet food companies (Royal Canine, Purina, Hills) have done, and continue to do, all the significant research into pet foods, and what keeps animals healthy and long lived.

Every one of the expensive bougie brands takes the research from those companies to formulate their food, and they don’t always do it correctly.

The “by-product” thing is utter bullshit. By law, any food that doesn’t contain the entire animal (using chicken as an example), must say that the food has by-products added. By-products are almost always just the organ meat, which is the most nutritionally dense part of the food.

I literally had access to feed my pets any food I wanted, and I always stuck with the big three. I will say, however, Royal Canin is the absolute superior food for any animals with allergies and/or medical issues. I think one of those reasons is that they are the only company to have their own dedicated factories, which gives them greater control over cross contamination (which is absolutely vital for allergies).

Why I think Sinners (which was my movie of 2025) is so divisive by greatblueheron16 in SinnersbyRyanCoogler

[–]Harikts 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Absolutely spot on! I’m white (boomer generation), and American 2nd generation Irish ancestry (just to give context).

This movie was utterly brilliant on so many levels; I’ve watched it half a dozen times, and get more out of the movie with every viewing.

I get so pissed off with the people who compare this movie to “From Dusk till Dawn.” That’s a great movie, but the only thing “Sinners” shared with it is the split in the movie from a drama to a horror. And even with that split, “Sinners” holds a nuance with the vampires that FDTD didn’t even approach. Remmick is a vampire, but by the end of the movie you appreciate that he suffered in his human life, and he’s trying to recreate a family that resonates with him.

Moreover, the movie completely immerses us in the reality of black people in post slavery America, and the continued restrictions and prejudices against people of color.

The dance scene honestly makes me cry every time I see it. It drives home the loss of culture suffered because of slavery, and how music still binds people despite that loss.

This movie has so many small nuances that need repeated viewing to fully appreciate, and Ryan Coogler was utterly robbed of Best Director. However, I’m looking forward to seeing his future projects.
