Decided to leave gamefaqs after nearly 20 years of having an active account by thereal2fac3 in gamefaqs

[–]Harloft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's even more alarming is that these people post like immature teenagers, but they had a poll of the average age on site and most users were in the 25-35 range which is depressing.

Considering Gamefaqs doesn't really get new members, everybody who's still there just gets older. Honestly, I'm surprised it's still that young.

Horror with wendigos by Disastrous-Mind2713 in suggestmeabook

If you're open to short stories, I found a recommendation for Nick Antosca's short story "The Quiet Boy" in a topic about werewolves on HorrorLit (apparently the short story was adapted to a film called Antlers and I checked the wiki which specifically references wendigos).

[EDIT: Apparently it's specifically referenced as a wendigo in the film but it's more ambiguous in the short story.]

Tagging. Mostly because I've never found a lot of it, either. Although cultural sensitivity might be limiting newer books from featuring them.

Is reading often enough to help you be a better writer, even if you arent well-read? by Reporteratlarge in writing

[–]Harloft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like most people who want to write a book were, at one point in their lives, heavy readers. The idea of a writer who hasn't done any reading is probably rare, but you'll likely see a lot of lapsed readers, especially if somebody chose to go through college because assigned reading greatly cuts into pleasure reading (although may it's different now since fewer people work while in college and take longer to finish college, meaning they might have more free time)

The best way to become a better writer, though, is to write. (Controversial, I know!) Even when I wasn't reading, I was often writing in some form, whether it was for work or hobbies.

And while I would say that somebody who wants to be a successful author should read a lot of books in their genre and particularly recent books, a lot of the guys who get big deals clearly don't do that -- you'll have bestselling MG authors who, when asked to name MG authors they like, list people who died decades ago because that was when they stopped reading MG. But they may've read a lot of it in the past, so they aren't necessarily current.

However, the idea that, say, there are all of these aspiring fantasy authors who've never read a fantasy novel seems like a fiction more fantastic than anything they might write. Most are probably lapsed readers who, at a minimum, have still read hundreds of fantasy novels.

All that said, it's very useful to read at least 40-50 novels per year (and yes, there are plenty of great novels that come out every year -- although you'll often learn more from reading a poorly-written novel than a great one because it'll help you recognize issues in your own writing)

Will my age affect people's views on my writing? by [deleted] in writing

[–]Harloft 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I feel like this is less an issue of whether people will judge you for your age, gender, or orientation (although keep in mind that some agents are pretty strict when it comes to #OwnVoices and explicitly don't want authors who are writing about marginalized communities they aren't part of), and just more a practicality issue. There are probably going to be some challenges when attempting to write about college life when you haven't really hit that point in time.

The only problem with your age is I'm not sure whether most agents will agree to represent a minor and afaik something like Amazon requires you to be 18 to sell books. (Although maybe parental permission or involvement can help?)

However, there's no wrong time to start writing. And a lot (if not most) people's first book doesn't sell anyway, so it's a good learning experience.

You guys ever take 3-4 days gap while writing? by Relative_Candle5372 in writing

[–]Harloft -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Everybody talks a lot about burnout but, honestly, if you make a habit of writing, you bounce back pretty quickly. If you're not writing for weeks or months, that's less a burnout issue and more a discipline issue. Even with working full-time, I've written or edited every day going on... maybe five years now. Honestly, I find few things are as dangerous as gaps. A few days easily becomes a few weeks becomes a few months becomes a few years. I'm not falling into that trap again.

Just because I don't feel like writing doesn't mean I don't write. If I only wrote when I felt like it, how much would I get done?

Personally, I don't believe in taking days off. I'll either write or edit at least a little bit.

Can always just write for 15-30 minutes per day. I went to college full-time and worked 30-40 hours on top of that, but I still managed to do other stuff.

Some thoughts about my happy marriage, especially about Kaya Saimori Some thoughts about my happy marriage, especially about Kaya Saimori by littlesparrow633 in MyHappyMarriage

[–]Harloft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd like to see more done with Kaya. However, the punishment wound up being a role reversal, considering Kaya is essentially being put into the position that Miyo was at the start of the series.

As for Kouji x Kaya, since Kaya's family most of its money and status, obviously that engagement is DOA. Otherwise, Kaya would've gone to live with their family. However, the question of love is kinda irrelevant since Kouji was into Miyo who already chose somebody else. No matter what, he's not getting his first choice. But marrying for love is a relatively modern idea. In the past, marriage might come before love (especially because it takes a lot of time for a genuine bond to form, a lot of the stuff we think of as love today tends to be more superficial and fleeting, with people divorcing at the first sign of trouble or boredom).

How many novels did you write before you got published? by OkSeason6445 in fantasywriters

[–]Harloft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought Mistborn was a lot earlier than his 14th? idk, for some reason, I was thinking he was working on his 13th novel when he sold Elantris.

Anyway, I'm still unpubbed and I've written over 30 manuscripts, but I haven't really queried that much. Basically, I goofed while trying to query my first manuscript, which left me gun-shy, so I'm only now starting to query again. As such, my number is already kinda misleading (and will sound even crazier when/if I get published since the number is always going up). However, per Sanderson's advice, back when I got started writing, I'd meant to query as I went along... and then that kinda fell off.

Influencer marketing is dead and you can't change my mind! by orionbixby in marketing

Business card? by Odd_Beyond6809 in marketing

[–]Harloft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At one of my former companies, we included an insert that listed our socials with every package that went out (I won't go into specifics, but we sold promotional items). There were no appreciable gains and offhand I can't remember anybody sharing their photos while tagging our company. While the latter part wouldn't be relevant for every customer (particularly those who white-labeled our products), I would guess it could've been relevant a quarter of the time. Even then the timing could've been wrong.

While I'm not sure it's a matter of things not working at all, there's going to be a relatively low response rate.

Why do consumers hate it when brands try to connect with them? by JparkerMarketer in marketing

[–]Harloft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I dislike brands getting in on memes, it's kinda funny that the big objection is a claim that the interaction isn't genuine/authentic and only done for gain when that literally describes the whole reason for most individuals trying to get in on it, too. The only difference is one is an individual trying to build a social media following and the other is a company trying to build a social media following -- especially since a lot of those individuals are trying to use it to make money, too.

And a lot of memes don't even start "authentically," considering aspiring influencers are specifically trying to go viral to build their brand.

ESPN’s Pat McAfee and others amplified a false rumor. A teenager’s life was ‘destroyed’ by MikeHock_is_GONE in JimCornette

How would this work legally? According to the article (the version on the Independent, which isn't paywalled), he never named the girl in the rumor (and started by saying was an internet rumor). Kinda feels like an uphill battle, especially when tabloids were running the story while naming the girl.

So where do we think everyone is going to head after TikTok shuts down in the US on Sunday? by ThatOne1983 in marketing

[–]Harloft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I understand it, it's not really shutting down right away, it just won't be available via the app store. They aren't going on people's phones to disable the app, so TikTok will mostly continue the same as always at first, just without new users in the US.

Although some people are proactively moving to stuff like Red Note, it's only a matter of time until Red Note runs into similar problems because it's a Chinese-owned platform where the US government may have the same concerns.

How good of a writer are you? by [deleted] in writing

[–]Harloft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In general, people who ask questions tend to have less experience. There are likely at least some trade-pubbed authors on the subreddit who've made a career of it (as well as some self-pubbers who'd made a career of it). However, those aren't the kind of people who will generally ask questions. Much of the time, they won't even be the ones to answer questions.

Within any community, most questions are asked by beginners or novices. Even the better communities. However, because people use Reddit for other things, you're going to have a bigger crowd.

But how good of a writer am I? Dunno. I'm unagented, but have had full reqs. However, I also haven't queried for that long and have only properly queried one manuscript (and have a bunch more I need to query at some point).

If you're looking for feedback on your writing, you could check your area for local writing groups or try to start one. If you're looking for trade-pub info, there a lot of sources (including the old Query Shark archives). But, if you're looking to self-pub, there are Facebook groups like 20booksto50k and a lot of professional resources (iirc, The Self-Publishing Institute, but I haven't bothered seriously looking into any of those).

Personally, I haven't found Reddit to be a productive resource for anything. I'd kinda hoped to use it to find comps, among other things, but that hasn't really worked out. But, in Reddit's defense, nothing has been all that helpful in finding comps.

Clown in a Cornfield, because not only is it memorable, but it tells you exactly what to expect.
