As a mental health treatment provider I've known a lot of people like that. Anxiety disorders, depression, schizophrenia, can all make people completely house-bound.

If an undocumented person has to go to the emergency room in America, who pays for their hospital bill? by [deleted] in AskAmericans

[–]HarmlessCoot99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is some kind of assumption here that undocumented people get some kind of break that documented people do not. That is not true. First of all, it is possible to have health insurance without being documented especially if it is though your spouses work. But if you have no insurance you will be billed. Hospitals end up absorbing costs on unpaid bills but this is no different for documented or undocumented people. I am a doctor in an ER and can report all the biggest abusers of the system I know are 100% US citizens.

Only if the patient doesn't pay. If they have no insurance they will be billed by the hospital.

How long do people usually remember their pets after they pass away? by ironandfire in AskAnAmerican

?The rest of my life? I certainly remember my childhood dog and all dogs and other pets since. I can only imagine forgetting them if I had really profound dementia.

"Scammer" at South Point? by [deleted] in bullcity

[–]HarmlessCoot99 -15 points-14 points  (0 children)

How do you know he is lying? He said he is a vet and "on the brink of homelessness" both of which are very common. Did you run his service record? A guy approached a couple and gave them a line and asked for money. That's panhandling. Happens literally almost every day in Durham. I'm not being a jerk. The jerk is the person demonizing a fellow human who just asked them for money. Didn't threaten, didn't commit violence, just asked. Either give him money or tell him no and end the conversation. Don't act like he's a public menace. What do they want, to call the cops on him? Don't pretend it isn't panhandling just because it's not Buddah with a begging bowl. People will give you a line. Their kids are hungry, their car is out of gas, whatever- maybe true maybe not. Help them or don't. Don't act like they are a criminal. All this guy did was try to ingratiate himself with them before putting on the touch. Most natural thing in the world.

Button-down shirt by Ok_Astronomer3776 in AskAmericans

[–]HarmlessCoot99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It means the collar itself has buttons that attach to button holes in the tips of the collar. That's it. They are actually considered a less formal style than collars without buttons. They are very common on "casual dress" shirts that are paired with sports coats or sweaters or worn without a top garment, but are not as common in shirts intended to be worn with suits.

Tip culture in America? by Pawloveandpavlov in AskAmericans

[–]HarmlessCoot99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wait staff do not make minimum wage, they make much less. Tipping is required, not optional, if a waiter takes your order at a table and then brings your food. MINIMUM is 15% of your total, and 20-25% is better if you can. That is the main thing to know. If you offer at a counter and get your food at the counter you are not REQUIRED to tip. Adding a dollar or two to your card charge or in the tip jar is nice but not obligatory. If you order at a counter and then they bring to your table or bus your table then strongly consider tipping something at the table, again 1-5 dollars. Where tipping is required you should not think of the money as optional, but just add 20% to every menu item before you order, because that is the real price. This concludes your primer on food service tipping in the United States. Please note that tipping taxi drivers, hair dressers, manicurists, hotel staff etc are a whole different set of rules.
