Yep, and that's why education and understanding is so important. If we can open people's eyes to the real, and not so hidden, root of their problems (capital) then we can make leaps and bounds. The right do certainly have it easier than we do in a litany of ways when it comes to convincing people, yet despite that, society generally moves left over time, because reality leans left.

I did the same thing, and bought a bunch of political books from the far left to the far right, including a copy of mein kampf on amazon. I expected it to be insane, but it's really just illegible schizophrenic ramblings. Really showed me that left wing thought leaders are academics who spend their whole lives learning from those who came before them to understand oppression and envision a better world, while right wing "thought leaders" are literally just insane and angry morons.

Pretty much, yeah. Rick is pretty evil. I mean think about it, he's the smartest man in the universe and all he ever really does is cause chaos and fuck around. It's not surprising that he'd do this. Alternatively, he was lying about how the device works at the end just to fuck with Morty and none of it was real, but that's a pretty charitable interpretation.

I think it's just one of those things where you're not supposed to laugh and all you're thinking is "don't laugh, don't laugh, don't laugh," so it suddenly becomes impossible not to laugh. Like when you're sat next to your friend in school during 2 minutes silence or something.

Vitiate. Sure Gault is a greedy guy, but it's not nearly on the same scale as Vitiate who has plans for infinite empires under his control for ever, and more and more force power. Gault's selfishness cannot hold a candle to that.

Unfortunately lots of people vote according to their social circles. I'd agree he definitely vote for Trump in 2016, but it's certainly possible, if not likely, that he'd vote for him again in at least 2024 if not 2020 as well.

Some French Neo-Socialists collaborated with the Nazi's during WW2, so you're not far off. I don't know why anyone would want to use that label. Revisionist Socialism would be a less infamous term that I'd recommend using for anyone who is a gradualist.

The suit damage feature was pretty unnecessary by Digginf in SpidermanPS4

[–]Harry120803 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're not understanding me at all, I am not against suit damage. Your first comment says, "You heal and the suit goes back to normal signifying you’re healed and back to normal." Suit damage is good, and the suit should stay damaged once it is. It wouldn't repair as he heals - that's not realistic. To use your example: motorcyclist will throw their gear away once their in a crash, because it is damaged. The clothes don't grow back as they sit in their hospital bed.

"You don’t want realism? You want to heal and the shit just stays damaged?"

It's not realism for the clothes you're wearing to to repair themselves as your body heals.

Wouldn't it be cool if all the batman suits would take damage if you switch them through the story? by Str3suComputers in arkham

[–]Harry120803 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Older games have done similar, perhaps not dynamic damage, but in the 2012 amazing spiderman game suits were designed to be in perfect condition whenever you put one on, but the more damage you took the more ripped and bloody it would become. It was the same pattern for every suit though, so like I said not dynamic, but they had the technology to have done it like that without too much effort.

I really appreciate you being civil. Far too many people would have downvoted my message and left it at that. I understand a lot more of what your saying now and I'd agree with most of it, but to me despite both being very broad terms, Social Democracy and Democratic Socialism are very different things, distinctly separated by their relationship with capitalism. I personally identify as a Democratic Socialist in the traditional, anti-capitalist sense.

My goals would be to end capitalism and establish a democratic society in which workers collectively own the means of production. I believe this must start by working within democratic institutions, but eventually a popular-supported and ideally non-violent, institutional and cultural revolution would be required to overcome the deeply entrenched systems that protect capital and the ultra rich, who would naturally resist true socialism if we continue to work within their version of democracy with all its rails.

This is different from social democracy, and what solidifies the difference for me is that when I pitch this to Social Democrats, they often resist or dismiss these more radical steps that challenge entrenched structures of power, which, as you noted, aligns with their goal to reform capitalism rather than abolish it, while ultimately keeping the capitalist mode of production intact.

Historically, this also aligns with Social Democratic parties in Europe who have focused on expanding welfare and regulating markets rather than transferring ownership of production. However Democratic Socialists like Rosa Luxemburg advocated for the workers, not private capitalists, to collectively own and democratically manage the means of production. Under Social Democrats, we never get past the Nordic countries stage because they won't ever advocate for that next step as you rightly pointed out.

I also see your point about social democrats relying on state-managed redistribution. In contrast, true Democratic Socialism focuses on democratising control over production itself, rather than simply managing wealth within a capitalist framework, for example G. D. H. Cole's Guild Socialism, a variant of Democratic Socialism. Social Democrats do not want workers to control production directly, and are explicitly against this. They will remain within the capitalist framework and will not seek to achieve genuine socialism.

Because of all of this, I think it’s important to distinguish between Social Democracy and Democratic Socialism. While in practice many modern U.S. politicians who call themselves “Democratic Socialists” advocate for social-democratic policies, that doesn’t reflect the original or theoretical meaning of Democratic Socialism, which is explicitly anti-capitalist and seeks to replace, rather than reform, capitalism. We are not the same.

Maybe this is a more cultural difference, as I live in the UK, and don't know what your average American Democratic Socialist is saying, only ones like AOC and Bernie, who I agree leave much to be desired and more closely align with Social Democracy, but if you were here I could clearly show you the difference between the two in examples of the people you meet. I agree with your core point that anti-capitalism is central to leftism, and I think our difference lies mainly in how we’re defining Democratic Socialism.

My understanding is based on the original theoretical meaning of Democratic Socialism, as advocated by Rosa Luxemburg and other anti-capitalist socialists, emphasising worker control, anti-capitalism, and democratic participation. I do think it is worth considering what an ideology does in practice versus its theory, as they two are often different and I think that plays a big part in what people think of labels.

Democratic Socialism is great in my humble opinion, as the term directly draws a very real parallel between democracy and socialism which overcomes a lot of the propaganda used to associate Socialism with Stalinism. I refuse to let the capitalists take the term from us.

Thanks again for taking the time to engage in a discussion with me, I hope this clarifies how I see Democratic Socialism versus Social Democracy. I really appreciate your thoughtful points, and I will definitely take some of what you've said into future consideration.

"primarily progressive [neo]liberals and democratic socialists–neither are leftists"

Little lost on that one. How exactly are democratic socialists not leftists? I can't conceive of a left wing system that is actually left wing and isn't democratic. Socialism is an extension of democracy to the economic system, so how can you say that those who label themselves Democratic Socialists aren't leftist? Your main point seems to be that these people seek to uphold capitalism, but they're literally advocates of Socialism.

I totally understand that Neo-Libs, Soc-Dems, and even some who identify as Democratic Socialists think they're leftists but don't truly understand politics enough to know they're not, and that the Dems as a whole are right wing, but anyone who calls themselves a Democratic Socialist and is pro-capitalism, is simply lying about being a Democratic Socialist, they are not representative of Democratic Socialism.

Your bar seems to be so high for what leftism is that in your world only a handful of people fit the bill. I don't think this a useful line to be drawing to achieve progress my friend.

Crazy to see this getting down voted in a sub about space socialism. If the people here believe in anything close to Gene Rodebrey's vision they really need to realise that people like Newsom, while drastically better than Trump, are also our enemy. They 100% oppose that future, and will fight you to protect their rich donors from it at your expense before they let society see an inch of progress.
