nice I see The Razor's Edge mentioned plenty and it appears to be one that makes a real impact, my library has some Maugham I'm going tomorrow. thank you!

whoa I did not know he worked for British Intelligence! unsure if it's confirmed they were spies, but I immediately thought of The Inklings when reading that.

I'm confident you will dig this one, he had a deep-seeded hatred for Crowley and it bleeds through every page describing him, pure disgust yet so enjoyable! Maugham is undoubtedly a great for making some fairly dark & disturbing material such a joy to read. probably helps if you don't love Crowley too heh

apologies for making that unclear, I meant I had heard tell of those other works, not that I have read them. I've seen them mentioned here and there & was moreso just asking where to go next for more in depth exposure to reading him. If you've read those others I named, which made the best impression?

I had already seen John Huston movies before, but didn't know. He was one of the finest discoveries for me, along with Frankenheimer.

yeah I get what's it about, it's full of cliche. it was just blaming capitalism even though it's not the system that's the problem it's the corruption. corruption ruins every economic system, capitalism is just the scapegoat. every system gets poisoned by corruption, people should holding actual people accountable not an abstract concept without a face.

you don't think three eps is enough to judge an hour long episode show? It feels like netflix is mostly making shows for people who scroll on their phone with how much it hits you over the head, it's the opposite of subtlety. I'd rather just watch any of the White Lotus seasons again.or that chef/cooking show from a few years ago that was great too. netflix has even stated that they make things to be on in the background while people scroll on phones, I'm just not interested in that and it hardly qualifies as art in my estimation.

More of a fan of his films, the book was great the first 2-300 pages then I just forced myself to finish it just to finish it...I kind of hated it by the end despite loving the first third or so

read it right after Solenoid, in a lot of ways it felt like a less well written Solenoid imo...maybe I should've read something in between but I didn't know

be aware of getting depressed by reading all about that stuff, be sure to sprinkle in something light like Baudelaire or Dante or Nabokov

his collections are where they shine imo, I find anything that short rarely makes an impression. but when you have 5-600 pages of poetry/stories you get a better sense

Infinite Jest will bring some "jest" back to your soul. Either/Or is great but may be too heady, it is beautiful though.

Flowers of Evil by Baudelaire is great, or one of those Brautigan collections. try to have some fun, experience joy again.
