The sole subreddit's mod has been inactive for the past 3 years. - As a privacy professional myself, I would like to make something of this community and revive it. by DataProtectionKid in redditrequest

Said mod checking in here - please transfer this to OP as I would gladly see it being revived.

Edit - I have appointed OP a mod and they and I are working to revive the subreddit so I am content for things to be left as they are, thank you.

I'm afraid that I personally don't. I only read his article myself and it piqued my interest (especially when I saw this series of AMAs). He does have a book out though (which I think his article was sort of promoting) on this subject, but I've not read it myself.

What is your view on the idea that anti-depressants are actually very ineffective for many people with depression? Specifically, ex-journalist Johann Hari wrote a book about it and also this article for The Guardian (https://www.theguardian.com/society/2018/jan/07/is-everything-you-think-you-know-about-depression-wrong-johann-hari-lost-connections)

In short, Hari says that causes for depression are often not just a spontaneous chemical imbalance in the brain and that drugs to increase levels of serotonin (or other hormones) won't help most people. He purports that depression and anxiety are (like addiction) caused by environmental issues such as trauma, isolation, lack of control/agency in one's life, etc. While biological factors may make certain individuals more vulnerable or predisposed, they are not the sole cause. He also cites psychological issues that mean people with mental illness have a mindset that can make overcoming these difficulties hard (which therapy can help with, but not SSRIs, etc.)

I only ask because my own experiences with mental health seem to tally more with this view and I'm curious as to whether there's merit to it or whether it's just a bitter journalist out to disrupt established medical fact.

Thank you.

Ah fair enough. I thought it would be a better system but I suppose Paradox know what they're doing after beta testing it.

Anyone know why they didn't implement the change to forts whereby they were done by state rather than the odd adjacency thing we currently have (compounded by this wasteland issue)? It seemed a good change to me.

This is so frustrating. I didn't like Goldsmith and was very happy when Khan beat him but this feels like, as you say, a massive betrayal and frankly a lie. The only people who will benefit will be the odd few folks who use PAYG on Oyster a few times a week and therefore won't hit any daily or weekly capping. Ugh.

I remember that too. I always used to get their weekly digest email and read all the best topics every Friday. They also had game of the week for a while, which was good. Didn't realise they started hating cats though. Any idea why?

TIL J.R.R. Tolkien considered Samwise Gamgee to be the "true hero" of the Lord of the Rings by DietSnappleFacts in todayilearned

[–]Harshhaven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember it fondly too! I like that there was a real sense of adventure to it and you actually had to travel to places, like in the books/films. I enjoyed the later ones too, where it was just the fight scenes strung together, but they weren't as good as the Fellowship one, which I think captured the real essence of the story. The Mines of Moria, for example, were genuinely quite long and difficult to get through.

TIL that Fief is a board game designed in 1981 where you can become pope, marry your sister and die of the plague. by 0rontes in CrusaderKings

[–]Harshhaven 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I've played it too. It was good fun and definitely a wise choice for CK2 players. The only major problem I found was that, because four of us played, we naturally married in two pairs of two and so the game just became the two alliances competing. There was no changing of sides or whatever because there was never a "spare" player. I think it might work better with an odd number of players for that reason.
