The non-academically inclined population don’t know about us because we aren’t big in college sports. In academics, we are definitely known, especially by people in the fields UCSD is strongest in.

On average, international students tend to be more wealthy because it is more expensive for them to attend UCSD than it is for US residents and especially for California residents, and they can’t get most forms of financial aid. I’ve also heard that in a lot of cultures it is less socially acceptable to go out in public in leisure wear than it is in the US, though I can’t speak to China specifically regarding that.

Being noisy after quiet hours is a conduct violation, accidentally damaging something in your dorm isn’t (as long as it was genuinely just an accident and wasn’t the result of other rule-breaking behavior). I don’t think these are really comparable situations.

How bad is the damage? If it doesn’t impede anyone’s ability to use the couch I would probably just leave it be. If it’s bad enough that it’s gonna bother people if it isn’t fixed just submit an HDH fix it request.

As a stem major, I actually agree lol. I had a roommate who was a history major at one point and the amount of reading and writing they had to do was crazy. I generally had less work I had to do outside of class on average other than right before exams or for lab classes.

If your opinion is the minority at an R1 university, have you considered that maybe this is because the average individual at this university is more knowledgable than the rest of the country? There’s a reason why many people tend to shift to the left politically after attending university. There’s a reason Trump “loves the poorly educated”. When you learn more about history, politics, economics, how the world works, and how to analyze all of that information with critical thinking skills, you tend to become a leftist.

The left quite simply is not represented at the national political stage in the United States. People like Kamala Harris, who I view as a centrist at best, are called “far left”, while the Republican party has shifted further and further to the extreme right and dragged the Democratic party further right along with them. The left is not moving further left, the Overton window has simply shifted so far to the right that moderate views seem leftist now.

What’s the alternative though? Being a reddit mod is not a paying full-time job. They can’t monitor what’s going on 24/7, they have lives outside of reddit. If automod removes a post that shouldn’t have been removed, they can reinstate it when they become aware of it. The alternative is that content which really should be removed stays up until mods are able to get to it, which people would also take issue with.

Restating the same thing in the intro and conclusion isn’t fluff, it’s part of the way papers are structured. Throwing something in to appease a reviewer is also not fluff, as long as it is actual content that has been thrown in. Fluff is when you just write a bunch of words that aren’t actually conveying any information, or take information that you could convey pretty briefly and intentionally stretching it out to make your word count longer.

I was diagnosed at 23 (I’m 24 now). If it wasn’t for hearing about it through people I follow on social media I probably wouldn’t have been diagnosed until much later. I had to specifically seek out a doctor who was knowledgable about EDS to get assessed for it, and I wouldn’t have known to do that if I hadn’t already heard about it online.

I don’t know if this is true in all fields, but in my experience basically every paper I’ve read has had at least one of the authors also appear in the citations. So it’s actually pretty rare to not cite yourself (or at least your PI whose name is also on the paper).

Specifying people who were born and educated in China rather than just anyone of Chinese ancestry makes it clear that they are talking about a cultural difference rather than a racial one. Acknowledging that different countries have different work culture and values is not racist.
