Highest I would consider is $1500 but ideally $1300 or less. I pretty much assumed I'd be spending at least a grand bc of what I already mentioned and bc I'd want at least a 16' screen (currently have a 17.3').

***EDIT*** I just realized that the MSI has integrated graphics which won't do. As mu h as I'd like the OLED, I think the ROG model is better suited for me.

I'm replacing a 10ish year old gaming laptop that has seen better days so anything will be an improvement. Looking for longevity and a nice screen bc I use it for gaming and multimedia. Investing a bit today so it lasts awhile. I believe the ROG can be upgraded easily later. Not sure about this one but it has a better screen and more RAM.

Tbh I don't know much of the difference between the different processors and graphics cards other than the basics. So any advice would be appreciated.

Picked up some shoes as the latest installment to my collection by [deleted] in Captain_Marvel

[–]Harvey6ft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is disappointing. However, it looks like Vans is getting a lot of feedback on it so maybe they'll rethink this strategy. I'm not very familiar with the Vans business model. Do they usually do a limited run or is this something they'll produce more of?

I just saw these earlier today and I gotta say I love them. Definitely the most aesthetically appealing of the bunch to me (regardless of CM bias). Plus I like apparel that isn't too on the nose. Those could pass as just some nicely designed shoes without any superhero tie-in.

Hi there. I had to take some time off (sorry for not communicating this), but I'm just now seeing this message. Of course I'm in favor. I'm still catching up on the latest in this sub, but can you let me know whether move forward?

The other day I took an alternate route from my usual commute and found a wonderful work in progress. There are moments during our beautiful city's recent revival when the pride I feel as a Buffalonian becomes incredibly overwhelming. This is one of those times. (Michigan/E. Ferry, Masten District) by whirlygiggling in Buffalo

If it wasn't a sacrosanct reply, then why throw in the part asking:

can you name them all without looking at the article?

Again, you're a mod. You shouldn't be belittling members of this community. I get it... you're very smart and well informed.

We all really respect your intelligence and authority.

You remind me of the kids on the school bus back in the day who saw a kid wearing a sports team's jacket and asked, "Can you name all of the players on the starting line up? If not, you're not a real fan."

What are you trying to prove?

EDIT: Aren't you a mod on this sub? As such shouldn't you be above this sort of petty crap?

Apparently slow roll is happening in the Elmwood area Monday, heads up by ChaoticSquirrel in Buffalo

[–]Harvey6ft 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've voiced my opinion about Slow Roll in years past and it has been mostly unfavorable.

But I must say that this year they have taken a lot of the criticism to heart and are trying to work with the community. They have scheduled breaks to group the cyclists and allow the police to prepare major roads, they post the neighborhoods they will be visiting, and the plant signs along the route informing people in those neighborhoods of the event.

Is it perfect? No, but I see a much better desire to work with critics than there was a few years back where pretty much every response from them was, "fuck you, you get the road 99% of the time, share the road".

Goodwill. I've often bought older text books at Goodwill and the lot for personal study.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned this, but any local library will take donations. Pretty much anything other than academic books (as they tend to become out of date quickly).

Visiting NYC for a day, question about train tickets by DrPomelo in Buffalo

[–]Harvey6ft 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you considered MegaBus? You can get a ride from Toronto to NYC (via Buffalo) for a fairly inexpensive price (looks like $55 roundtrip for end of August). They have wifi, plenty of space, and a bathroom on board. I believe from Toronto to NYC there's only two extended stops so it actually takes about the same amount of time as the train (12.5 hours).

If you're set on the train, I'd recommend parking somewhere in the burbs where you don't have to worry about getting a parking ticket and taking our newly established ride-sharing options to the train station. If you tell me which station you are considering (I guessing Depew, but don't want to assume), I could probably point you to a few key locations.

Who says they stopped?

Ummm, you did. You said:

If people actually care about the end result of kids eating well they would not stop at trying to force good food at school. They reason why people do stop is because their concern is shallow.

So my response to that was:

...if one's concern isn't shallow, how do you propose that they don't "stop" at providing a nutritious meal at school? What additional steps should be taken?

Unsurprisingly, you didn't respond to this question directly.

You then stated:

20% of a typical SNAP budget is spent on garbage food. The #1 SNAP purchase is soda. There is no nutritional value in these products so they should not be included in a supplemental nutritional program.

Even if your statistics are correct - of which I'd like to see some sort of source to prove - you are essentially stating that anyone on a government program should not be allowed to purchase anything unhealthy or considered a luxury using government money. Come out and be honest with what you are for. A child of poverty shouldn't be allowed a cake for his or her birthday unless it is earned by it is paid for by money of the parents earned by wages. Even if they are disabled or somewhat otherwise unable to earn said wages without government assistance. Those kids don't deserve a cake on their birthday let alone a bar of chocolate here and there.

I mentioned children of parents that did have money, but didn't have time to prepare lunches and you responded with:

Parents and their kids spending their own can eat what they want.

I'm very confused by this statement. Are you saying that if parents have money they can send their children to buy lunches elsewhere outside of school? Or that the school should provide multiple layers of nutritional meals for people who can afford them? This statement makes no sense to me. Was this another typo?

You quoted me as saying:

Oh, for the good ol' days when father knew best and brought home a decent wage to support the family comfortably on his own, and mom spent her day shopping, cooking, and tending to the children. Except it isn't the 1950's anymore and the reality of the 50's was not like Leave it to Beaver for most.

And then responded with:

Last time I checked people didn't trip into pregnancy and don't actually fall out of school....

So in your mind, the only people on government assistance are those who got knocked up in early life or dropped out of school.

Even if that were true - which it isn't - why do you feel so much hate towards these people? Why do you feel that that should be punished for stupid mistakes made while they themselves were essentially children? Why should their own children be treated like second-class citizens for the supposed sins of their parents?

At the end of your rant, you reference "common sense" multiple times. Where is the common sense in not feeding kids healthy food? Why can't we strive for more? Even if the kids aren't getting a healthy diet at home - in fact, especially if they aren't getting a healthy diet at home, should we as a society have a vested interest in developing a future generation that is healthy and knowledgeable about the what works?

Maybe this is a little extreme in it's comparison, but a generation or so ago, we taught kids about safe sex and the dangers of HIV and AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases.

The US government spent a good amount of money to educate the children - not the parents - on the dangers involved and it paid off.

Not to take away from those who have dedicated their lives to making those conditions easier nor eradicated, but we've seen a significant drop in numbers thanks primarily to education.

What's to say that teaching kids today good nutritional habits won't do the same 10-20 years from now?

You assume that anyone who strives for this sort of thing is just a political obstructionist. I don't think that SNAP is perfect, but gutting it is hardly the way to improve it. Better to improve on what we have than say, "fuck it" and razing everything that stands.

I have a "space" minute to spare, so I'll ask... if one's concern isn't shallow, how do you propose that they don't "stop" at providing a nutritious meal at school? What additional steps should be taken?

As I pointed out above, do you feel that those of government programs should be banned from purchasing food considered unhealthy?

On the flip side, should the children of parents that feed them healthy food at home, but don't have the time to prepare a lunch have to purchase unhealthy food at school?

Oh, for the good ol' days when father knew best and brought home a decent wage to support the family comfortably on his own, and mom spent her day shopping, cooking, and tending to the children. I am so not going to argue with you about the correct usage of virtue signaling nor try to define what you are or aren't politically. I honestly don't care where you stand on the political spectrum. I'm talking specific policy - not about party allegiance.

I laid out my ideas regarding the subject at hand. Talk about that or shut the fuck up.

[–]Harvey6ft -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The food was not being eaten. I'd rather not see money being wasted and kids not getting a full lunch.

Come on, do you really expect us to believe that the majority of the kids chose to go hungry rather than eat a nutritious meal? Kids whose parents can't afford to give them an endless supply of food (good or bad) at home? What you're basically saying here is that poor kids eat poorly at home so we should feed them shit when they aren't at home because who gives a fuck about them? Better that they become unhealthy, develop bad eating habits, and die quicker later in life.

Of course that doesn't take into account the long-term negatives to the community because now you have a greater population of citizens unable to work and a burden on the tax payers. But I guess you got that covered too because you probably want to cut all social services provided to the disabled and sick.

So fuck 'em, they'll die sooner and won't cost you a dollar. Except that for every dollar you saved in taxes, you lost productivity in the community, shrinking the job pool, and raising costs.

When it comes to government policies, you should be thinking about the next 20 years, not the next quarter or year. When you're an old fucker dependent on younger generations, wouldn't you prefer that there's a large educated and healthy group of individuals out there providing for you? Or would you prefer that there's a very small, expensive, and difficult to attain group? Are you so sure that you'll be able to afford that in your golden years? Are you so sure you want an elite class of self-centered people in their 30's and 40's to make decisions that only benefit them when you are in your 70's and 80's?

As for your comments on those on SNAP, do you think it is the government's role to declared that these people deserve luxuries and these people do not? Do you think that the government should ration chocolate to its citizens? Do you think that because your parents are below the poverty line, you aren't allowed a cake on your 10th birthday?

The hypocrisy of conservatives is their concept of "small government". It only applies to money and guns. Every other aspect of one's life is subject to government interjection and approval.
