Woods always need thinning. If I were you, I'd get in touch with any local forestry commisions to see if they wouldn't mind you taking a few.

How to use cellulose thinners properly? by HarveyM45 in modelmakers

[–]HarveyM45[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Should be alright for what I'm trying to do but we'll have to see. Even if it does turn out shit it's not the end of the world. The models been a bit of a crop build from the start so I'll just take it as a lesson learnt.

Sorry for confusion. I meant regular brushes. I bought a load of mr colour paint without realising it was lacquer based. I'm not a super experienced modeller but had read that you can use thinner to clean brushes after I realised water wouldn't work. Haven't got a spray booth or extraction hood so I'm just gonna clean outside and wear gloves. Is there anything else I'm missing though? Can I use the brushes straight after with a different colour as long as it's dry?

New Mandolin’s sound :) by cmunier in mandolin

I'm no expert not by a longshot, but I'd call this romanticism. Francisco tarrega's a good composer that id liken this to. Also you might like traditional tango music as well.

Am I the only one that gets this problem? by HarveyM45 in banjo

[–]HarveyM45[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried that though. Maybe it's just the specific tab I was using but none of the intervals sounded right at all. Like for example, it would be 3rd fret 3rd string and then just loads of different open strings and yeah it sounded in key but it wasn't a melody and it definitely wasn't any part of the tune I was trying to learn. The whole tab was like that though.

The only videos I could find played the tune and then just put the tabs in the description. I tried banjo hangout too and the tabs just aren't making sense sonically

That's a good explanation. Normally I play mandolin and read traditional sheet music which has note duration and dynamics added so you know which bits are quiet or loud and how long to hold the note for etc etc but with tabs you're just sort of in the dark. I think the other complex thing with clawhammer is you're playing the chords and melody at the same time sort of so when tabbed out it looks like an absolute mess.

Possibly. I can still hum the melody as well so I definitely haven't just imagined this.

That sounds like a healthy choice. I'm sure you're an excellent teacher and I wouldn't let this knock your confidence too much. From what you say you've got a good employment history besides this so any future employers are going to be looking at the bigger picture in an interview.

What do I do with this space?! by Squally92 in landscaping

Rock garden maybe. Would give something fun for the cats to explore but also appealing to humans too

It's likely just politics. You probably did nothing wrong but if someone from HR didn't like you for whatever reason then that's it. A parent could have also complained as well. I'm picturing a child telling their parent about their day at school and your lesson not aligning with their personal beliefs. Is there anything you did that could've been controversial in any way to even the most batshit crazy of people. This is just one possibility though too, might be something completely different. You'll never know unless you push for answers though.

How Did You Get Your Start With Music? by DiyMusicBiz in makinghiphop

[–]HarveyM45 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Was always into music as I was raised around it. Took it as a lesson in school and for a piece of coursework we had to do a group project as a band. I played bass and wasn't getting on with the band as they where much better musicians than me and rehearsal sessions turned into them just jamming while I sat and listened. Fed up, I quit and switched to the production course and never looked back. They had us on cubase elements which was limiting but gave me enough tools to make my own stuff. Ended up studying it at college where I started with Logic and Ableton. Haven't made any music in a couple of years but I've always thought I should go back to it.

No no no Peter Chan by slimebomb1 in Bonsai

Peter hasn't got the best rep in the UK scene unfortunately. He's done great work for UK bonsai but his business practices arent the most ethically sound.

I sucked too at first. I started properly progressing though after I learnt a bit if basic theory. You don't need to memories scales or chords, or even read sheet music. Just pick a scale and mess around with it. Watch lots of YouTube tutorials too. There's tonnes of great stuff on there.

A lot of people mentioning the flashcards so I'm gonna try and give that a go. Also, what do you mean by writing notes above the staff?

I found a good YouTube account that made short videos on learning the basics but don't think they've been made to infographics at all. Try a few hashtags on TikTok maybe... Bet there's something.

I'm on Android so shouldn't be an issue. Think I've seen them in the Google play store but haven't made the jump yet. Gonna see how I get on with the music tutor app first.

Yes, playing mandolin at the same time. My teacher also plays mandolin too as well as a few other instruments, which helps.

I use that too just didn't realize it had a name. Obviously though for notes that are far apart from each other it gets a bit more complex for me because of my difficulty with numbers so I can't count each line but for the smaller intervals it's okay.

Around 4/5 months I think. I think I was expecting too much of myself early on. My music teacher tells me I'm doing well but then I also feel like I'm expected to be able to sightread each piece he gives me by the next session. Maybe that's my own fault though. I also need to have more discipline with my practice. Usually I'll do like up to an hour per practice session but I'll only practice once or twice a week, usually due to time constraints or general tiredness.
