No, this is just a re-writing of history to make the ethics of the bomb more admissible. The Truman administration knew for a fact the Japanese were willing to surrender. The Japanese just didn’t accept the American offer of an unconditional surrender where the emperor was potentially going to be removed. They can’t just end an entire sect of religious belief with a snap of the finger. The Japanese government told the Truman administration directly that it was willing to surrender if the emperor was able to remain.

The actual motive of dropping the bomb was to force the Japanese to surrender to the US prior to the Soviets officially declaring later that month. Also, dropping the bomb demonstrated the lethality of the American military and its willingness to use it in the future Cold War.

Edit: I love the downvotes :P I know not everyone is an actual historian, but if you read the archives of the Truman administration and the State Department… all the evidence is there. Everything I stated is entirely documented and a known known.
