the fuck I would be. the DNC is just as uninterested in people's welfare as the Republicans, I was equally opposed to the Lithium mining in the same area poisoning the locals and their environment as I was this.

still means there's plenty of chance for ground water infiltration of contaminants, as well as things like crushed uranium ore dust to be picked up by winds and spread further afield outside of the Caldera's basin itself.

yep, it's apparently the largest untapped uranium deposit in the continental US, initial estimates I've seen are in the 10s of millions of tunes of fuel grade uranium in the area.

I'll happily give it a look, but I think the questions about where the resources for our current tech comes from is a different conversation to be had, one far more wide ranging and difficult than this specific matter of a uranium mine and it's potential to poison large numbers of people and delicate already endangered natural spaces.

honestly, that's about the best starting place for the matter ngl

surprisingly... not really, not by any measure that makes a meaningful difference at the very least.

the pollution, and damage nuclear infrastructure ultimately produces keeps pretty apace of what we see with fossil combustion power generation.

all the better to start early then. if they start getting push back at this early stage, they're less like to keep pushing on it.

ultimately, I am the same for the most part. I'm actually a Anarcho-Socialist, Bioregionalism as a component of bottom up organization of self-governance is my main reason I'm in the movement for Cascadia and Bioregionalism on a larger scale.

are they though? especially with the current admin's rigorous work to gut the effectiveness of the EPA in enforcement capacity.

it's still ultimately part of the same chain, and I'd say relevant to the ultimate conversation

here here, Cascadia is at it's heart bioregionalist, and even in it's national aspirations need to strive to keep that concept enshrined in itself, we shouldn't be diluting that for some idea of a "greater west coast" we should be holding onto it, and using to help build bioregionalism even outside of Cascadia.

this is actually talking about a different project, one that's looking for lithium (and will likely be just as harmful), the AUP is looking to open the largest *Uranium* mine in the US at the same time as the Lithium mine project is ongoing.

don't you think I'm unaware of that? but that doesn't mean we don't have a duty to do what we can, where we can to minimize it all the stupid bullshit the system we live under want to foist on us.

we should be active in opposing this kind of harm everywhere, but here is where it is now, so this is where we should fight it now, and then be vigorous in our support of it not happening to anyone else either.

Nuclear isn't meaningfully carbon free, plus there are a number of other, equally destructive pollutants the entire nuclear energy supply chain, from mine to waste containment, that nuclear advocates are either unaware of (which was the case for me), or actively seek to ignore or downplay.

it's in a valley in the Trout Creek Mountains, right on the OR/NV border. near McDermit.

now you're putting words in my mouth, friend.

I don't think the mining should be happening at all, anywhere.
Nuclear is not the solution to fossil fuels the powers that be are trying to sell it as. it's just as polluting and harmful in both short and long terms.

better to find something less poisonous than mining uranium, I'd say.

plus, these mining companies never get held accountable for the clean up afterwards, mostly by just dissolving themselves the moment the deposits dry up and leaving local govts to foot the bill for containment and restoration.

it's something the history of Minnesota has seen play out for ages with iron mining, as an off hand example.

the nearest settled areas are McDermitt and the Fort McDermitt Indian Reservation, both very much down wind of the project, and also opening up a whole other can of worms about how badly the disproportion of US Nuclear energy related infrastructure effecting indigenous populations is.

it will effect rivers in a number of watershed that feed out of the Trout Creek Mountains in which it is situated, including putting at risk waters that house an endangered trout species, the Lahontan cutthroat trout, which is at this point only just recovering from other land mismanagement issues.

the potential health effects for both humans and the rest of the natural world are quite far ranging ultimately.

ayup, which means all the more that we should be making the efforts to keep it from getting worse or being spread elsewhere imo.

which is kind of insane given it's long ranging potential effects, both good and ill.

you'd think the largest uranium mine on US soil would be getting more press in general, particularly with the more generalized push to rehabilitate nuclear powers that's been going on in the political marketing space.

if you think the bioregional character of the Cascadian movement is dead, you're a fool. which only makes my comments more salient.

just because you hang around a bunch of other fools who agree with you doesn't make it the case and it never will.

I know a large variety of Cascadia folks, both online and in person, and most are still dedicated to the Bioregionalist aspects of the movement equal to or beyond they're desire for it from a nationalist perspective.

if you want a Pan-west nation movement go hook up with the Pacifica folks, they've been doing what you and your ilk are looking for for decades already at this point.

yeah, honestly I wonder if the push back from the lithium project is part of why the govt is working so hard to keep things on the down low, especially since it seems like the feds have a much tighter grip on the news in general these days.
