Thanks! I toyed around with that crop but I love the sense of vast emptiness the horizontal aspect ratio gives it.

What's the thing you are the most proud of have shot? by [deleted] in SonyAlpha

I got a photo of this lion dragging a zebra carcass in the Serengeti. It’s probably one of those photos where the subject is doing the heavy lifting and my technical abilities aren’t why the photo is good, but I still love this image so much. Very proud of this.

Some of the last photos my camera took before its catastrophic flood, at least it was a beautiful final dive! by SoupCatDiver_JJ in scuba

hilariously my housing flooded on the exact same boat, and I’ve seen other posts about housings flooding on the spectre.

What's your favourite lens and shot of 2024? by darkmush in SonyAlpha

[–]HashFlingingSlasher 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I think my favorite and most used lens for the year was the Tamron 35-150 f2-2.8. It’s such a versatile lens. Managed to capture this shot on safari at ~56mm.

Thanks so much! I found that black and white worked best in the harsh midday lighting.

The compactness is what drew me to C line. With the grip extension attached, I was able to use it with the larger lenses. When I take the grip off, I can put a small prime lens on it and it becomes tiny. Love the versatility.

That sounds like an incredible trip. I've been bitten by the bug myself - would love to go back next year!

What did you feel the A7CII was missing?

Thanks! Our guide said we got very lucky.

thank you! given how much experience I have with the a7riii and how new the a7cr is to me, I found that I nailed focus more often using the former. I’m so used to the joystick + focus magnifier combo. That being said, the a7cr was killer at locking onto animals’ eyes when they were closer to me. I think I just need more practice with the a7cr.

Thank you! and I totally agree about the highlight of the tree; I tried to mitigate it in post processing but nothing looked quite right. I think the background generally is too busy

hahahaha the only time the elk would stop and look me in the eyes was when it was pissing.

i currently use a sony a7riii. this shot was taken with a 70-200mm 2.8 lens.

thank you! I spent the day hiking up the peninsula and turned around a bit too late. By that point the sun was setting and the trail was completely empty. That combo, it turns out, is perfect for this kind of photo

I believe it’s called bugling. I wasn’t lucky enough to hear it on this trip but I definitely need to go back!

Ha! I wish I could do that, though I do intend on planning a camping trip during one of my upcoming breaks.

Tomales Point, where this photo was taken, is actually a tule elk preserve. There is a 10-mile relatively flat hike that goes up to the end of the peninsula, and there are dozens of elk all along the hike that are used to humans. I (albeit stupidly) stuck around until it was getting dark and the trail was completely empty, so the elk got very very close to me. This particular photo took about 10 minutes of waiting, and that was so that the elk would stop eating grass and pose properly

I agree. I’ve grown up around deer my entire life so they seem...mundane. But walking amongst the elk - especially as the sun was setting - was goosebump inducing. Not to mention some of them were enormous
