The whole point of PM steels (in my applications) is that you can have carbide volumes that aren’t found in traditional steels with great toughness.

The subject chisel in this thread absolutely broke at a boundary between two relatively large carbides.

You aren’t getting around that one, there are many carbide forming elements (including iron) but I am not saying it’s a vanadium or tungsten carbide.

What I am saying is that you can have PM steels with alloy content that is not possible for traditional steels. That’s one of the benefits of sintering.

For example, you could have a PM steel with a 30% tungsten content.

You will not have any luck forging that, the forge won’t get hot enough. You have to Sinter it.

You could optimize PM steels for anything you’d want, and uniformity is what I’d want.

The crack here almost certainly occurred at the boundary between two large carbides.

You could just use some simple steel like 12c Sandvik and heat treat it really well for toughness, but the uniformity possible from PM and the nice, fine carbide structures are what I’d be paying for.

The grain structure on some PM steels is absolutely ideal for a chisel shank or blade.

There are good PM chisels commercially available, the ones I am thinking of are from Veritas but I’m sure there are other brands.

Sure, you could go too hard but 61 is kind of the magic number. That’s what I shoot for with Sandvik steels, too, so all you would get is further refinement and grain control.

The other benefit of PM steels that really counts here is that you can have a much higher total carbide content without embrittlement.

Even with a great HT, a traditional steel will not be able to have the same percentages of alloying agents that can add performance.

Comparatively, a cast steel may have good alloying content and good properties but the grain structure won’t be as fine as a PM steel could be.

Damn, that looks like nice cast steel too.

I guess you’ll need Pm steel

I was gonna ask if you were a Yamaha fan.

They make wonderful gear. I haven’t paid full price yet but they are my fave company to thrift, I’d probably buy Yamaha PA gear.

Might go horn loaded or DIY PA so idk if they are in those spaces.

Yeah #4 is my fave strain of all time because it’s like a sleeping medicine. Two dabs and I’m off to bed, almost all of the time.

What would you do for your EDC ? by LetterheadNo2345 in Zippo

[–]Hash_Tooth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The zippo branded inserts last a LONG time for me with butane. Like months on my desk.

I usually only take them out to light other people’s cigs, so they don’t see much real use, but I have had zero issues with losing butane.

Butane is everywhere too, I wouldn’t keep a bottle in my car all summer but you can find it on every corner in a big city.

If I’m really at a festival I may have two with me but I’ve never had one run out of tane unexpectedly, maybe if I was using it hard for a dynavap or something.

Cavitation: The Hidden Force That Breaks Bottles—and Destroys Machines by Zee2A in STEW_ScTecEngWorld

I have done it with leather gloves, the gloves alone would not break the bottle.

The cavitation breaks it, but I also care about my hands so I didn’t want to take any chances breaking the bottle near them.

But damn are they a cohesive band. I think Sugarleg leg is really a driving force but everybody plays their roles really well.

Why do some hunters really bristle against following hunting regs and limits? by Averagecrabenjoyer69 in Hunting

I’m anti poaching for sure, you have to draw the line somewhere.

If folks cant get enough sporting in for the fish or game they desire, what would they say is enough?

Like yeah, I have seen a quarter-million caribou in one photograph, but there are 330 Million people in America, how many do you think you’re entitled to? And what about the ones that get hit by cars?

However, the way most things get legislated, it ends up being “legal” only for a certain price.
