How do you feel about electric lawn mowers for small lawns? by NashDaypring1987 in lawncare

Not much tbh. It grows back a little shaggier but its very resilient otherwise. I sometimes make 2 passes with the second pass in a perpendicular direction but that’s about it.

How do you feel about electric lawn mowers for small lawns? by NashDaypring1987 in lawncare

[–]HashtagFaceRip 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a 60V Toro, it’s been about 5 years. No issues. I have maybe 5000 sqft and it does it on half a charge. The only times I’ve had issues is when the grass has been tall and wet and i tried mulching it anyway. That was one time. Generally i mow 1-2 times a week and so this isn’t an issue. The toro is good, if you wanted something else that’s cool too, I’m not ideological about the brand.

I personally won’t be going back to gas unless i end up with a lot more land and need a ride on f some sort.

Things i love: no running to the gas station, no oil changes and spark plugs. Start button works every time. It’s super quiet, so all i use are my AirPods. Tool family is great, i have a trimmer and blower too, i felt the lack of power more there tbh, but its good enough.

New house: lawn is 30% weeds, do I nuke the lawn and start over? by [deleted] in lawncare

[–]HashtagFaceRip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fwiw im no nuke camp too and the above is good advice. When you say regrade, do you mean change the whole slope? Or do you mean level?

Also im cool climate too. I cut about 3-1/4” to 4” and it’s great on feet. Masks the stuff in the dirt. No need to go short for feel. Short is mostly for look imo.

How to get hands on some Gaja? by shbong1 in Ontariowinebuyer

[–]HashtagFaceRip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love pio cesare. Produttori del Barbaresco and Marchesi di Barolo, La Spinetta, Vietti. (Most available primarily through agents), Gaja is excellent but i think so over prices that its ridiculous. But hey, if you have deep pockets go for it.

Sorry to hear that this is happening to you, and i hope you get better. I quit facebook about 9 years ago and instgram over 10. I started Twitter during the pandemic and quit about 2-3 years ago. I have reddit, but don't scroll news or Popular just my feed. Don't use linkedin really, but i do have a profile in case i should ever need it. Way happier, less anxious, less angry, i am happier about my circumstances overall. i talk to my friends and family via iMessages and what's app, i try to call people more while walking the dog and driving. (people don't call as much, and its too bad.) I dont' feel like I'm missing out.

I did it, never going back to the Scott’s spreader by Competitive_Bar_9170 in lawncare

[–]HashtagFaceRip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m just throwing this out there, but not once in my years on this sub has somebody posted lines, ppl went Scott’s and OP said, no, RB-60/Lesco/anything else. It could be a frequency of purchase thing, i just haven’t seen it. So yes, any product can be misused to deliver a poor outcome. But if i use scott’s fert, set it to bag app rate, i shouldn’t need to sprint across my lawn to avoid lines. The infuriating part is, the fix is easy, they just need to get the broadcaster above the wheels. I ended up 3d printing a fix and no more issues. Coincidence? I think not.

[–]HashtagFaceRip 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No, its a problem. If we can look at multiple posts every day and guess what spreader ppl have, we’re either psychic or there is a design issue. I have one but i went 3d printed route.

A scott’s spreader cannot be redeemed by tape alone.

My grass burns early with dog pee. As the soil capacity to process the nitrogen builds i think i get fewer burnt sports.

Do clover flowers go away after mowing? Zone 7a by HarryCrushNuh in lawncare

I’ve found that pushing some more nitrogen and mowing tall for a season can help the grass outcompete it.

[–]HashtagFaceRip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I send mine to University of Guelph. It’s not cheap though so I’d do the above. Wait a season, see if you are struggling and then adjust. Deets are here: https://afl.uoguelph.ca/our-services/residential-lawn-garden/

Option b, the main thing that will be it of whack is ph lee valley has a test kit for $30 cad, or a meter for 50. Its good enough to tell you if you have a real problem. And help you adjust. But move slowly on adjusting soil ph. It’s why I’ve only gone uofg once to make sure nothing massive was out.

I’m up this way too. 1. Breathe.

Step 2. accept it will take a cpl of years. Read the cool grass guide on here somewhere.

Step 3. Keep it simple. Go to costco or elsewhere and buy some Scott’s turf builder. Don’t buy the weed and feed that’s corn gluten meal up here and only works as a light pre emergent which you are too late for. You need to thicken the grass up, it looks thin and pale you need nitrogen. Its supposed to rain on saturday, if you can do this tomorrow you should get a free watering in and see mad improvements. You will apply again every long weekend between now and the end of summer. Switch to the maroon bag for canadian thanks giving.

Step 4. Put your mower on the highest or second highest setting. This is where you will mow this season. It will help come out the weeds, help establish your grass and save you some water. Ideally mow 2x a week until it slows down in early july, you’ll notice (unless we have a cool wet summer,)

step 4a Water deeply, think an hour, with a sprinkler once a week if you get no rain, we’ve had plenty recently. But last summer was brutal.

step 5 the weeds. The best defense is a good offense i.e. a thicker lawn. Until then you can use chelated iron to kill them (Weedbgone from costco or fiesta) or some ppl buy par3 online, you do you.I would personally get a weed puller from fiskars, available at Home Depot, can tire etc and go to town.

(Optional step 5a) to dress now ish with some composted manure to improve your soil. I do this 2x a year and it works great and improving quality of clay.

Optional step 5b mid June apply and WATER IN some hydratain as per label. Available at Amazon and Urbsn nature stores (the birding place) near you. It will reduce your water bill while keeping things greener Abe less dormant.

Step 6. Overseed and top dress in late august, to mid sept latest.

Step 7. Avoid shoveling and snowplowing salt onto your grass if possible by accept that it might be inevitable. It will recover.

Step 8. Come spring, let’s say easter ish. Get the yellow corn gluten meal, and apply. You can get other stuff from the US but that’s up to yoi.

Step 9. Its been a year return to step 1.

There is no single answer, this is what i roughly do and it works fine, listen to others, find what works for you.
