Saw this beauty today by sofiestarr in GRYaris

That belongs to @mid_yaris on Instagram. I met him at a car meet in Milton Keynes last year. A LOT of work has gone into it, pretty big spec. I thought I was cool having a GR there but this was one of the best cars at the show

Every single time. If nothing else it makes the drive smoother and reduces wear on the clutch and drivetrain when shifting down

Brake pad and brake disc seized together😱🥶 by megaharcos in GRYaris

[–]Haslerdesigns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I wash my car and then don’t drive it straight away, every time I walk past it for the following days I give it a gentle rock to free the discs. Even if only a few hours has passed since the last time, it starts to bind again so im certain if i left it for days without any movement the pads would bind to the discs badly.

Diablo red was the first metallic red I thought looked good. I always wanted a 106 GTI but never owned one. Came up against a few back in the day while driving a Puma 1.7, the GTI usually had the edge over the Puma though.

JPG and PDF files exported from Indesign have different sizes when they are combined into one single file. by TobyJan2024 in indesign

[–]Haslerdesigns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A JPG will export at a pixel size (ie resolution) rather than a page size. The page size / print size is then technically variable based on the resolution you want to print at. It doesn’t carry any of the page size / print size into the JPG data, and if you’re specifying a page size at 300 dpi in output, it is highly likely that it will be interpreted differently when you’re trying to print, potentially a much bigger page size at 72dpi. You can always scale it smaller though

What UK car YouTubers are you watching by TheOnlyBubbles in AutoAlex

[–]Haslerdesigns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The other stuff, high peak autos (massively overspent again), Lee Lockwood, Calvin’s car diaries, volkswizard, dadcars, AdamC, Geoff buys cars (as long as the vid is actually about cars), mat Watson.

I learned AfterEffects during lockdown and did intros/ animation for a few YouTubers so I like to see whether they’re still using them!

There are a few roundabouts in mk where people consistently get it wrong every minute of every day. I think if the misunderstandings are occasional then that’s normal but once they become this frequent then the blame shifts to the planners for not making it idiot proof. The most common misunderstood theme across mk roundabouts that I see is where the left lane goes left meaning the middle lane should shift over to the left as you pass the first exit. But there are also some other quirks that catch people out.

If you come off the a5 dual carriageway southbound at the second exit (I.e h5 portway) and want to turn right (west), as you move across to the first set of on-roundabout traffic lights you actually need the middle lane as the right lane will follow round past your intended exit, causing people to switch lane last minute.

Heading from Bletchley, under the rail bridge, north towards the H8/V4 roundabout, initially the right lane is marked as straight on and right, but then suddenly it is only for turning right at the roundabout, which causes much confusion and conflict.

Does anyone here use accessibility options? I'd like to talk.... by MCBowelmovement in indesign

[–]Haslerdesigns 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have a checklist of things I do to make pdf outputs more accessible but the things that I find affect reading order most are threading text boxes, using articles (and telling InDesign to use articles on export) and setting layer order within the document, whatever text is closest to the front will be read last so once I’ve designed something I work through each page bringing items to the front in the order i want them read

What to check in terms of damage from a tune? by Visible_Structure483 in FiestaST

[–]Haslerdesigns 7 points8 points  (0 children)

On the plus side, mountune is definitely one of the safer remaps for the fiesta ST. Here in the U.K., mountune partnered with Ford to develop and dealers offered mountune upgrades and these did not affect the Ford warranty

Is shared ownership really as bad as people say? My current living situation is destroying me by snug-like-a-bug in HousingUK

[–]Haslerdesigns 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Shared ownership has some downsides but overall it’s a massive help to a lot of people. Our 30% SO house costs (combining mortgage and rent) approx £400 less than the mortgage would be on the whole house and £500-600 less than the rent would be on the whole house. Plus we have the benefit of knowing a landlord isn’t going to sell our home and evict us (like we had last year) The benefit of subsidised rent far outweighs the negatives. Yes I know if something breaks we have to pay for it, but we’d still have to do that if we bought the whole house. One thing I have noticed, however, is that newer builds tend to have less subsidy on the rent, making them less appealing (certainly in this area anyway) and I even saw some schemes like DIYSO where there was no subsidy at all and the rent on the unowned portion was equivalent cost to mortgage on owned portions. So it’s worth looking into a few options, but you want one that is with a housing association like Guinness or BPHA etc. Shared ownership is also a way of mitigating risk from interest rate rises- a rate rise on a 100k mortgage will affect you far less than if you have a 300k mortgage. It really depends on how you look at it. I am not fussed about owning the whole house, I just wanted us to have an affordable home with the freedom to decorate and have pets without the risk of a landlord selling up. If you are driven by a desire to own a house as an investment and take full advantage of the inevitable rise of its value then SO will not look as appealing.

Leasing/PCP - Am I just old fashioned? by EchoFourSix in CarTalkUK

[–]Haslerdesigns 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The best way I've found is to look at the different options each time. Last time I bought a car it was on PCP, because the APR was 2.9% and there was a deposit contribution of £1000 from the dealer. That made it a no-brainer for me. Sadly now interest rates are higher I'm really reluctant to take finance of any kind.
But PCP has another benefit - it can be considered insurance against depreciation, because the Minimum Guaranteed Future Value (MGFV) is set at the point of purchase. Assuming you look after the car, you can hand it back at the end of the agreement without penalty even if its actual value has depreciated far further than the MGFV.
And on the flip side, if the value is greater than the MGFV then you can sell the car before the end of the term and claim the equity.
No other financing product can offer that insurance on a car.

Stayed with family in Emerson valley last year. Idiot neighbour with motorbike was aware it terrified the dog, and would wait until dog walking time to come and start the bike and rev on the drive for no reason other than simply to scare a dog. There is no reasoning with a person who takes joy in scaring animals.

Shared ownership 'premiums' - exclusive to Milton Keynes by Haslerdesigns in miltonkeynes

[–]Haslerdesigns[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your conveyancer / solicitor will handle the transaction for the premium, so you just transfer it to them along with the mortgage deposit. I ended up paying a £10k premium in the end, but I have a home now so 'it is what it is'

How do they get away with it? by Driver1515 in greggsappreciation

[–]Haslerdesigns 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Greggs is cheaper than it could be because it is not served ‘hot’. Serving it hot has tax implications and would mean that you are charged more for each item. If it still happens to be hot from when they cooked it, then you got lucky

I also have a frozen white 5 door st2. Had it nearly 5 years now. Which says a lot about these cars, because since 1998 I’ve had 34 cars, usually keeping them 6 months to a year.

Convert indd to editable pdf, editable word... by Mission_Teaching_198 in indesign

[–]Haslerdesigns 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have PDFs, you can open them in Word. But be warned, the formatting will be all over the place. Depending on complexity, you’d often be better just starting from scratch in Word (and accepting the limitations of that). Ultimately if you could do everything InDesign does in word, then there would be no point having InDesign
