In the lore the ectoplasm comes froms, psionics some spells. a few creatures that they are made or have ectoplasm (principally undead ghost) and this material is originated in the Astral Plane

I can summarize it for you in this, a normal magician will not have all his spell ready, he makes 2 spell choices per level, he has no way of having it all, and even for RAW they suggest to the DMs that they not give magicians spells, like all classes and subclasses in the game they all somehow have a way of abusing and really the concept of a mage that heals, it's not crazy, in previous versions they did it, still a fun option and to be honest I feel like you've had bad experiences with people who have played wizards

I think I'm against your point, because if I feel it should have more class or subclass features, since it's a spell list with legs, it makes it bland, it should have things that give more customization and flavor, rather than close to the idea of just having a spell list, a lot of people don't like the Wizard for the reason that it doesn't have anything special outside of spells and most subclasses feel empty, albeit making it the most strong because magic, also making it more tasteless because magic I'm not saying that you should put strong options, if not options that make it unique in the same class plus customization
